At the time, Robert Towne was going through legal issues with The Two Jakes (1990), the planned sequel to Chinatown (1974), and it ended up severing his friendship with Jack Nicholson (they have apparently since reconciled). Greg and Carlos each have a speech about friendship, that reflects Towne's feelings of betrayal.
You meet at Orville and Wilbur's every Christmas. He throws his Chevrolet keys on the bar. You throw your Porsche keys on the bar. You pick up your drink with a gold Rolex on your wrist. He wears a Timex. Even if he wasn't a cop he'd hate your guts.
When Mel Gibson and Arliss Howard are talking about Kurt Russell's character, Arliss Howard says "You guys meet at Orville and Wilbur's once a year. You're wearing a gold Rolex and he's wearing a Timex. If he wasn't a cop, he'd have to hate you." Throughout the movie, Kurt Russell is clearly wearing a Rolex.
As the end credits roll, the color of the text changes from dark orange (at the bottom of the screen) to yellow (at the top), mirroring the colors of a Tequila Sunrise cocktail.
