When two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, they have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby.
Hayao Miyazaki originally conceived the characters Satsuki and Mei as a single girl. He wanted to add suspense to the latter half of the film, and he felt it wouldn't work with just a single girl, so he split her into two separate girls. The original girl had features of both Satsuki and Mei, and was 7: halfway between the ages of Satsuki (10) and Mei (4).
Satsuki, Mei Kusakabe:
Come out, come out, wherever you are!
When Mei is walking around with corn, a goat walks up and bears its large teeth. The goat shows a full set of upper and lower teeth. This is a mistake as goats do not have upper teeth.
The ending sequence has animation of Totoro and some of the characters from the film walking.
Current prints are missing the Toho Company, Ltd. title card that originally started the film.
