Norman Lovett shot to fame after appearing in 'Red Dwarf' as the the ship's incompetent computer Holly. In 1989, he devised a sitcom pilot for the 'Comic Asides' strand entitled 'I, Lovett' in which he cast himself as an eccentric inventor who seemed to live in a world of his own making. Four years later, a full series appeared, written in collaboration with Ian Pattison, creator of 'Rab C. Nesbitt'.
As I earlier said, Norman is an inventor and not a particularly good one at that. His numerous inventions range as far as hair restorer and central heating fitted bus stops. Norman's neighbours Darren ( Dicken Ashworth ) and Una ( Sara Corper ) usually bore the brunt of his schemes.
Norman's only real friends include his pet dog Dirk ( voiced by Geoffrey Hughes ), a talking spider ( voiced by Mary Riggans ) and a talking painting of a horse ( voiced by Leon Sinden ). Other inanimate objects such as his letterbox also talk to Norman.
'I, Lovett' sadly was not well received and has pretty much been forgotten, which is a pity as there were many witty lines scattered about, as well as some very funny situations, but viewers could only take so much of the character and after only seven episodes, he was not seen again.
