John's mom has a heart attack and ends in hospital. John flies home to take care of his dad, teaching him to do things around the house, spends time with him and shows him how to live again without mom's control. John's son joins them.
Dad (1989) star Jack Lemmon had earlier in the 1980s decade played a parent looking for his son in Missing (1982), and a father of the priesthood in Mass Appeal (1984). All three cinema movies were all produced and/or distributed by the Universal Pictures studio. Lemmon had also recently played the head of a family in Blake Edwards' That's Life! (1986).
What maybe happened is that he was so fearful of the cancer that his brain froze and stopped producing a chemical called Enzyme that his body needed. But with a last minute I.V. mixture, it gave him that bit of Enzyme that he needed. Of course, if ...
This film takes place in Los Angeles in 1989 but nothing about the Tremonts' house or neighborhood look like California or any neighborhood in Los Angeles. Short of a brief beach scene that shows a couple palm trees, the entire film looks like the Northeast because it was filmed in and around Boston.
