Although this movie mostly follows the plot of the novel, the actual scenes were re-written. There are some minor plot differences. In this movie, Victor Hazell is planning to have a new town built on his land and William's garage presents an obstacle to this. In the novel, Hazell owns a large brewery and no such plans are mentioned. In this movie, it is not explained from where his fortune comes, though with his London accent and social climbing ways, it is obvious he did not inherit his estate. William suspects that he was a "spiv" (a profiteer) during World War II (this movie is set in 1955, the novel was published in 1975 and had a present day setting). Also in the novel, Captain Lancaster is not reprimanded by the headmaster for caning his pupils and doesn't get any comeuppance, unlike in this movie.
