This year’s best documentary feature nominees continues a long trend of music docs being recognized by the Academy, as two music-related films have earned nominations at this year’s Oscars.
Amy, which tells the story of late songstress Amy Winehouse in her own words through never-before-seen archival footage and unreleased tracks and is nominated for best doc this year, earned nominations for the Queer Palm and Golden Eye awards at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival for director Asif Kapadia.
Filmmaker Liz Garbus earned the second nomination of her career with the Netflix documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone? The film focuses on the life of iconic R&B singer Nina Simone and her life as a singer, mother, and civil rights activist. Garbus earned her first Oscar nomination in 1998 for her documentary The Farm: Angola, USA.

Here's a little secret: most James Bond movies are pretty bad. That's not me trying to be contrarian or trying to rile anyone up, it's just my honest opinion. I think the majority of viewers (excluding true Bond obsessives who have seen all of the movies enough times to know better) have an inflated view of this series' overall quality. Until two years ago, I know I certainly did.
I grew up watching a Bond movie here and there with my dad during those holiday marathons, eventually catching most of them on cable and occasionally renting one to fill in a blind spot. For nearly thirty years, I believed that most of the Bond movies fell in the "good" to "great" category, largely because the idea of James Bond is so much better than what we ever actually see on screen. The amalgamation of all of the different actors' personalities — Connery,...

It almost had to happen. After each great Bond movie usually comes a disappointment: Tomorrow Never Dies succeeded GoldenEye, Quantum of Solace trailed Casino Royale, and now Spectre comes after the superlative revisionist Bond that was Skyfall.
Daniel Craig’s third 007 outing was so accomplished that it would inevitably be a tough act to follow; but though Spectre‘s sporadic brilliance means it in moments threatens to match its immediate predecessor, a sluggish third act and general unevenness ultimately leaves it as an entertaining yet inferior cousin. Thanks to last year’s Sony hack, we know Craig and director Sam Mendes rushed into the Spectre shoot with a grossly inflated budget and without a finished script in order to rapidly capitalize on Skyfall‘s billion-dollar success, and it shows: Spectre is a huge, opulent trifle with bloat issues and enough money to paper over the fact...

Sitting in a stack of pulpy old crime novels and lascivious short stories of hookers, gangsters and freaks may be a diamond in the rough. The book is about a heroin addict named “Frankie Machine”, it won the National Book Award in 1950, and Otto Preminger’s film adaptation starred Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak.
The book and the film, “The Man With the Golden Arm”, may ring a bell, but its author, Nelson Algren, is still buried in that stack of old books.
In the new documentary Algren, which got its premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival on October 14, Nelson Algren is in the company of Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson. But his name has been forgotten, least of all in Chicago where he called home.

A group of actors including Da Vinci’s Demons’ Lara Pulver, is joining the cast of Sky Atlantic/BBC America biopic, Fleming. The upcoming four-part drama stars Dominic Cooper as James Bond creator/author Ian Fleming and, as I reported last week, also has Annabelle Wallis lined up as Muriel Wright, the original inspiration for the Bond Girl. Sky confirms today that Pulver will play Ann O’Neill, with whom Fleming had a longterm on-off relationship before she became his wife in 1952. She is said to have heavily influenced the writer: a year after they wed, the first 007 book, Casino Royale, was published. Mr Selfridge‘s Samuel West is also aboard as Admiral John Godfrey with whom Fleming worked during WWII and who put him in charge of Operation Golden Eye. Godfrey is generally accepted to have been the inspiration for the M character in the Bond books. British actress...

“England is like some stricken beast too stupid to know it is dead. The English thing worked too well and too long. The intriguing aspect of mainstream cinema is in revealing the essence of things while lingering over their surface; the way in which superficiality connotes substance is its ultimate spell. Nothing better than Hollywood can describe the American psyche: its fears, ambitions and nightmarish dreams. Commercial franchises reflect in their own structure the main characteristics of their subject, for the themes and situations they (re-)present belong to the viewers’ ingrained frame of cultural references. Skyfall starts with an opening musical flourish that ends quickly. James Bond in silhouette steps forward. Only his eyes, resolute and stern, are visible. Without a single explosion, gun fired, or femme fatale, director Sam Mendes has hooked me; and Daniel Craig is an absolute bad ass.
Of all the previous Bond films my favorites are Goldfinger, Thunderball, and Golden Eye. I've seen all 23 films and I love the classic films the most because of how the've encapsulated their time period. The old films relied heavily on exotic locations, massive evil bases, and multiple Bond girls. Skyfall is the inverse; most of it is in the United Kingdom, the bad guy only has one base, and there are only 2 Bond girls.
Bond movies, at one time, were the pinnacle of large action sequences. But in a post Bourne, Avatar, Avengers, and Transformers world, how does 007 evolve? Again, Skyfall takes the alternate route,...

Rufus Norris's drama about an 11-year-old diabetic leads the pack in a year otherwise devoted to honouring older stars
Broken, the feature-film debut of award-winning theatre and opera director Rufus Norris, has emerged as the surprise frontrunner at this year's Bifas, the British independent film awards, with nine nominations. This year's judges have also doffed their caps to the elder generation of British acting talent, with Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith and Terence Stamp among the notable nominees.
A coming-of-age drama, adapted from Daniel Clay's 2008 novel, about a young girl living in a British suburb, which premiered to mixed reviews at the Cannes film festival in May but went on to win the Golden Eye award for best international film at the Zurich film festival, Broken stars Eloise Laurence as 11-year-old diabetic Skunk, along with Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Roy Kinnear. Moneypenny, Miss Moneypenny.
That's the new title of a British woman who recently changed her name to include the monikers of 14 different Bond girls.
According to the popular James Bond website MI6, 28-year-old bartender Emma-Louise Hodges is now known as "Miss Pussy Galore Honey Rider Solitaire Plenty O'Toole May Day Xenia Onatopp Holly Goodhead Tiffany Case Kissy Suzuki Mary Goodnight Jinx Johnson Octopussy Domino Moneypenny."
Quite a mouthful -- but that's no cheeky nom de guerre. The Sun writes that Hodges (or rather, Moneypenny) has officially changed her name by deed poll.
“I’ve always thought how great it would be to be a Bond girl -- and now I am," she told the British tabloid. “Ultimately though, I’m a good down-to-earth girl, so I opted for Miss Moneypenny as the main name -- even though she’s not technically a Bond girl.”

Walking through the entrance of Earl’s Court at this year’s Eurogamer Expo, the first thing we set our sight on was Nintendo’s Wii U booth. Already bustling with activity, so short a time after the doors were opened. So naturally that was my first port of call. Corralled like cattle into the space populated with promises of fun times, flustered looking convention goers and pretty women who probably aren’t being paid enough to stand around smiling all day, I set upon my journalistic duties by eating sweets.
Nintendoland is a collection of mini games that based on popular Nintendo franchises, but you probably knew that already. Being handed a standard Wii remote by a perpetually smiling brunette, we had a go with Animal Crossing: Sweet Day. A five player game with four people armed with standard Wii remotes, while one has the Wii U gamepad. It...

I just survived Adele-attack at YouTube, and I don’t know what to say about that misterious theme song for the upcoming Skyfall movie. There was some strange mix of the classic James Bond theme and (allow me to say) a little bit of tango tune, but – that was just one of the songs I ran to. Then, I got my chance to hear the official 30 seconds of the new Bond theme, and trust me – that version had nothing to do with tango, so I just decided that it’s time for me to take a little nap.
Never mind, the most important thing at this moment is that Adele fans are happy with her confirmation from Monday, when she revealed that she had recorded the theme for Skyfall, but also added that she was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for the 23rd...

Thursday night, Oliver Stone kicked off the 2012 Zurich Film Festival with his latest thriller "Savages," but all eyes were on the film's sole star in attendance, John Travolta, this year's recipient of the Golden Eye, the festival's lifetime achievement award. Despite a scene-stealing supporting turn in "Savages" and being the toast of Zurich, Travolta has had a rough year. Since May, Travolta's been plagued by controversy after a number of lawsuits were filed against him, including two from masseurs who claimed he had inappropriately touched and propositioned them (both have since dropped their lawsuits). Almost 3,000 broadband customers of mobile giant O2 are to be contacted with letters accusing them of illegally downloading pornographic films. Golden Eye International applied to the High Court to pursue cases in regards to 9,000 households on behalf of a range of copyright owners. The judge rejected all other cases, apart from ones pertaining to adult films produced by Ben Dover Productions. A total of 2,845 O2 customers are expected to receive warning letters from Golden Eye in regards to their alleged copyright infringement, starting in August. But the judge opted to water down the language of the letter and only allowed cases relating to O2's network to be included. Golden Eye International Ltd took action against the network provider on behalf of 13 adult entertainment firms. The distributor is in possession of 9,124 IP addresses of users that have allegedly pirated its films, and has drafted a warning letter demanding £700 for copyright infringement. However, the court rejected Golden Eye's right to claim the sum, stating that damages should be negotiated with each individual based on the specifics of each case. Inspired by Morgan Spurlock’s new film The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, an advertising agency boss has said he wants to place his clients in Australian films – but admits that advertisers are worried about appearing in flops.
Rob Belgiovane, executive creative director of Bwm – which has Alfa Romeo, Kmart and Weet-Bix as clients – told Encore that he would propose product placement opportunities to his clients “whenever possible from now on”, but said advertisers are reluctant to try brand integration in Australia.
“Australian marketing is all about eliminating risk. It’s difficult, in such an eye-balls driven industry, to get clients to commit to funding – there’s the risk of being associated with a film that flops,” he said.
“When Paul Hogan made Crocodile Dundee, it was impossible to know that it would turn out to be the hit that it was.”
Belgiovane also criticised the Australian production business for being elusive.

Recently I read an article about a new games company, going by the name of Silicon Sisters, a company that is run solely with girls in mind. Their website states their focus as such: “the company is committed to developing high quality, inspirational games with a decidedly female focus: games made by women and girls, for women and girls.”
This message made me think about the role of, and more importantly the attitude towards, women within the modern day gaming sphere.
Women and gaming have often had an odd relationship, and many an article has already been written by men and women alike about how women are portrayed in games, but it must be wondered, since when do women have to be pandered too with games in the way Silicon Sisters are?
Personally speaking as a woman, I didn’t really get into gaming on a regular basis until my...

The sad news of Elizabeth Taylor’s death last week marked the end of Hollywood’s Golden Era for me, the last remaining superstar finally expired. As a fan of Taylor’s since childhood – I’ll never forget seeing Cleopatra (1963) for the first time at 11 years old and literally being transfixed with the actress’s beauty for the entire 4 hour run time! – I’ve decided to abandon my usual Top 10 format and offer you her 20 greatest roles…because 10 is simply not a big enough number for the biggest diva of the screen!
Beginning in the industry at the tender age of 9, Taylor quickly rose to stardom on the MGM lot and become the most iconic actress of the 20th century. With an impressive 70 acting credits to her name, her life was plagued with illness but never prevented her from succeeding. Transcending her inimitable beauty, she proved that she was a...

The super sexy Famke Janssen (Taken, X-Men, Golden Eye, 100 Feet) has been cast in Paramount's sinister reimaging of the classic fairy tale Hansel & Gretel, as the leader of the witches alongside Gemma Arterton and Jeremey Renner .Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunter follows Arterton and Renner, who play the two gingerbread house survivers that grew up to be bad ass bounty hunters out to find the witches who held them captive 15 years ago and make them pay. Is anyone still reading?Did I mention how hot Famke Janssen is?The film is described a comedy action-horror film, which works out well because I was both frightened and laughing as I read up on it. Produced by Adam McKay & Will Ferrell's Gary Sanchez shingle, directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) and screenplay written by D.W. Harper and Tommy Wirkola. Target production start date is March 7, 2011.Source: The Playlist...

Good Game is a weekly column about the latest news in video games and casual gaming.
Fall is always a popular time for game releases, and this year is no exception. Whether you prefer RPGs, first-person shooters, sports games, or playing the guitar, there's something for everyone.
To help you sift through them all, I've created a list of the major releases through November — but first, here's a breakdown of the types of enemies and weapons you'll encounter in the new games.
Too bad we can't transfer weapons between games — if I had a sword in FIFA Soccer 11 I might actually score a goal.
Now on to the release list!

Edge of Darkness
The original drama series Edge of Darkness was broadcast on BBC in bleaker times, the 1980s when the English public was preoccupied with the thoughts of the murky nature of the Thatcherite state and an impending nuclear winter. Edge of Darkness has now been revived on film and comes across as relevant and important as it must have been in 80s. After all, Bhopal ‘84, and Chernobyl ’86 are no different from the recent Gulf of Mexico disaster.
Director Martin Campbell – director of the original series and also of two Bond films, Golden Eye and Casino Royale – brings out and reconciles, in under two hours, the crime drama and political thriller themes of the original story quite well here, except that Edge of Darkness has less of an edge and more of darkness.
Thomas Craven, played superbly by Mel Gibson, is a police detective meeting his daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) after a long time.

Pierce Brosnan has confessed that he doesn’t miss his old self as James Bond. The Irish actor played the role of Bond in “Golden Eye”, “Tomorrow Never Dies”, “The World Is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day” before Daniel Craig took over the duties. "I enjoyed my time as Bond but I don't miss him - I don't have any desire to do Bond again. I love who I am as an actor right now”, said Brosnan. He confessed that the effects of aging had an impact on his decision to step down from the roll. "I'm aware of my lack of stamina, particularly working with a young cast on “Remember Me” with Robert Pattinson, the latest heartthrob. Things do rattle and shake at times, but that's the challenge of life anyway," he said. ...

The first full day of E3 2010 kicks off with one of the most anticipated events of the show: Nintendo’s Press Conference. We know we’ll finally get a look at the 3Ds. But what about the new Zelda? Or the rumored Donkey Kong game from Retro? Stay tuned. The conference is starting… now!
Reggie Fils-Aime takes the stage
Zelda trailer! The Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword is the title. Wii remote with motion plus controls Link’s sword, the nunchuck controls his shield. Miyamoto comes onstage to show how to play the game. A, B, C, & Z are the only buttons used – everything else is gestural. Seems to be a bigger focus on combat than previous Zeldas. New item: a Beetle that players fire into the air, then steer around. It can grab items for players. Graphically, the game most resembles Twilight Princess, though with a bit of Windwaker thrown in.

London, April 26 – Actor Pierce Brosnan, who played the role of James Bond in four of the super spy series, has revealed that he struggled to promote his second 007 movie ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ – because he didn’t like it.
The 56-year-old actor has said that he loved shooting for Golden Eye but the following sequels were not as good, reports The Daily Express.
“I remember starting the first day on that film in an aircraft, flying a jet and it was 102 degrees, and I’m wearing a helmet and sweater, and then I’m.
