A Miller-Boyett Sitcom That Had Potential

Though it only lasted one season, I thought this sitcom was pretty good. Sure, it was produced by Miller-Boyett and had the usual silly sitcom cliches, but it was entertaining. Apparently, the network wasn't too satisfied with the show and retooled its format mid-season, which might explain why the ratings tanked immediately and replaced the following season with Baby Talk, a sitcom based on the Look Who's Talking films, which was immediately bashed by critics. The all-star cast of Alan Ruck, Jerry Levine, Heather Locklear, and Hallie Todd really made the show work, but it's too bad it didn't last long.

    An absolute ABC classic!

"GOING PLACES," is my opinion, is an absolute ABC classic! I'm not sure I've seen every episode, but I still enjoyed it. It's hard to say which episode was my favorite. However, I think it was always funny when a mishap occurred. I always laughed at that. Despite the fact that it was a short-lived series, it would have been nice if all the main characters stayed with the show throughout its entire run. It seems that no one stays with a show throughout its entire run. Everyone always gave a good performance, the production design was spectacular, the costumes were well-designed, and the writing was always very strong. In conclusion, I hope they bring it back on the air for fans of the show to see.

    one season sitcom

Charlie Davis (Alan Ruck) and Jack Davis (Jerry Levine) are brothers from Chicago. They arrive in Hollywood to start working as TV writers. Showrunner Dawn St. Claire (Holland Taylor) tells them to rent her beach house along with the two other writers, Alex Burton (Heather Locklear) and Kate Griffin (Hallie Todd). They are often joined by their new teenage neighbor Lindsay Bowen (Staci Keanan).

The starting premise has some issues that needs fixing. It is a bad sitcom construction. The rental beach house is gigantic and Lindsay has to force her way into the story every week. They should have made it into a joke where Dawn is demanding a large kickback from everybody's salaries for rent. The gang can live in the small pool house while Dawn and daughter Lindsay live in the main mansion. Still, I can live with this. The fact is that I really like this cast.

On episode 13, there is a big retooling and these last ones were aired after cancellation. The fictional show also gets canceled and the great Holland Taylor gets dumped. I don't want to hate on the two replacement dudes, but they are no Holland Taylor. Then the show gets a couple of Scrappy-Doo kids. It is ABC TGIF after all. The retooling makes this a different family-friendly show and worst in my opinion. It doesn't matter. Neither one is getting renewed.

A show on TGIF in the 80s that made me very very happy to see each week.

I loved this show when I was a kid! I loved their " work to do" song. For years I couldn't find anything on it and thought that I was crazy. Did I make this stuff up? It was heart warming and fun. Hello, it was on TGIF for goodness sakes. It didn't last, but at least we got it at all.

The best thing about this show was that everyone enjoyed being around each other. You just wanted to go to the beach with them all and have fun when they said " hey does anyone want to go to the beach?"

I can't remember a plot to save my life, but everything about this show had that fun sitcom feel to it. It won me over right away. I was just a kid, but I loved it.

It makes me happy to know that someone out there remembers this show. It makes me feel young again. I really wish a lot of things like this streamed or were on DVD.

    • Trivia
Displaced, then led to the cancellation of, the popular family sitcom "Just the Ten of Us", which had been a TGIF staple since 1988. ABC had decided they wanted a more-adult show as a lead-in for their 10 PM Friday night news program "20/20" and felt that "Going Places" would attract more adult viewers. Nevertheless the show was a critical and ratings failure, while reruns of "Just the 10...." performed extremely well on the USA network. This led ABC to publicly comment, in the spring of 1991, that it had been a mistake to cancel "Just the Ten of Us."
