Follows a crime, usually adapted from current headlines, from two separate vantage points, the police investigation and the prosecution in court.
Jesse L. Martin was absent from the last four episodes of the fifteenth season. He left the show temporarily to work on Rent (2005). His character, Detective Green, was shot in the line of duty. For those four episodes, Martin was replaced by Michael Imperioli as Detective Falco.

In one episode of Law & Order, Judge William Wright says that he's entering a not-guilty verdict after the jury foreman reads "guilty". While he can do this using "Judgement Notwithstanding", the procedure is that the defendant's defense attorney must file a JNOV after the trial and in a set time frame.
At the start of the season one episode "Torrents of Greed, Part 2" the customary "In the criminal justice system..." opening monologue and screen title were replaced with a monologue and screen title about manipulation of the legal system.
