The final negotiating point to convince Mel Gibson to do this film, was the offer of a use of a producer's house for the summer, allowing Gibson to shoot the film, and give his large family an excellent summer vacation home.

A "J" edit is used to mostly hide a dialog change when Joe says the line, "Relax. I'm doing everything I can do." The video cut takes place as he's sitting down and turning towards the camera and it's obvious he's not saying what we hear. There's also a slight, but noticeable, audio change when the dialog starts matching the video.
