An eight-year-old troublemaker must protect his house from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation.
John Candy's role as a polka player is a reference to a skit he did for SCTV (1976) called The Shmenge Brothers, featuring him and Eugene Levy as polka-playing brothers Yosh and Stan Shmenge. Catherine O'Hara co-starred with them in the mockumentary film The Last Polka (1985).
