  • This a very low budget action flick that I recently bought at Wal-Mart for a dollar. I want my dollar back! Filmed in Stockton, California, for the price of two used Jeeps (there's one of them on the DVD cover!) and a whole lot of blank ammunition, the "plot" involves a cop saving damsels in distress and fighting off and with mutant thugs in a post-global warming apocalyptic landscape where half the population is dead and the most of the rest are in hiding, attempting to ride out the emergency.

The star is one of these "action film stars" that you've never heard of, similar to Don Mogavero; look up his deets. The guy in this movie, Ron Marchini has a number of martial arts movies to his credit, including "Death Machines" from 1976, which I already own, but Ron M. would have to go about ten rungs up the career ladder to be equivalent to Dolph Lundgren.

The only reason to buy this film is if you have a collection of post-apocalypse movies and just have to own every single one. Or you're an Adam West fanatic. (Yes, Adam West is second billed in this movie.) Otherwise, please pass this by. You're a glutton for punishment if you don't.
  • Marchini might be a decent karate guy, but he's about the least convincing action hero there is. Maybe its the goofy sweatshirt, the grey hair, the tucked in shirt, the hat, or the dead line delivery, or maybe it's just the fact that this is a low budget and bland movie, but you're not going to get much out of this one other than a few laughs at all the groin kicks. The female characters were lame and the villains were worse. But at least there were lots of groin kicks!

I am looking at you Adam West! Seriously, the man looks as if he is bored out of his mind and has no interest at all in speaking his line clearly and in a tone that is not totally uninterested. Even his monologue at the beginning of the film is like 'who really cares' quality. I would have also rated this film higher had it did a better job with the plot as it bounces all over the place and then there is the fact the film was made in 1990. Had this thing been made in 1987 I could have given it more of a pass, as it looks like it was made in 86 or 87, but it should be a higher quality film in 1990.

The film features a future where the ozone layer has holes and there are solar flares that make men crazy and there are people auctioning off women because that seems to be the thing to do and I do not think the ozone layer has anything to do with whether solar flares are more intense or not. A bunch of cops get dispatched to take out the slave auction, but are too busy quipping so all but one gets shot. So if I had to take a guess, omega used in the title means last, so the main guy is the last cop. He holds up an awesome weapon and yells it's not over and it's true as it is damn near the beginning of the film!

The science of course is crap and at some point people will learn that when people start yelling the sky is falling it is to try and tax you more and take more control and has absolutely nothing to do with actual climate change. Back in the 70's it was an ice age a coming, in the 80's ozone depletion 90's it is hot a coming and in 00's and now it is simply climate change so anything that differs can be said to prove it. The fact the water level has not raised an inch should be a case in point, but then they try to say the sea floor has lowered. Of course, as long as they make up this stuff, Hollywood will try to make films that feed the fear like this one. Trust the scientist they say, well scientist created the nuclear bomb, are the reason there is cancer and have made diseases that could wipe us all out.

Sorry, got a bit political, I will get off my soapbox and back to omega cop which had a few action scenes as omega cop battled Jon Rhys Davies and the Ultimate Warrior at the end! Not really, but those two came to mind looking at the villains he was facing as well as Wraith, a big dude in leather that never actually does anything of note other than talk in a deep, but congested sounding voice. Still, the film was not boring and it was so awesome they even made a sequel and just called it Karate Cop!

Ron Marchini goes post-apocalyptic and in the course of the film saves three attractive women and kills a load of slave traders. And blows up things. It's a routine film with no surprises but has some felicities,:

1 )The locations are suitably distressed.

    2) Adam West though not in it much is good. (His proposal scene actually moved me.) 3) Some hilarious over acting.

    4) Tim Russell and Rick Slater who each play a ''Body on Fence' with great aplomb.

    5) Meg Thayer obviously.

Apparently there was a sequel called 'Dragon Cop' formerly known as 'Karate Cop'

In yet another post-apocalyptic future, a cop works to bust up a band of slave traders and save a few women along the way.

In all honesty, Omega Cop probably deserves a 1/10, but it's saved from that rating because it was so stupid in parts I was mildly entertainined on occasion. So what very little entertainment I got out of this thing was purely unintended. Star Ronald Marchini may have been a martial arts expert, but it didn't translate well to the screen. He's too wooden and unnatural. The rest of the movie is filled with equally poor acting, poor special effects, poor fight choreography, and poor everything else. And I'm convinced that Adam West had no idea what movie he was making. His character is so out of touch with the action in the rest of the film, it was often laugh-out-loud funny. Finally, I sort of felt sorry for Stuart Whitman. He made some bad career decisions, but this might have been the worst. Did he need a job this bad?

The makers of Omega Cop didn't try real hard on the whole post-apocalyptic thing. People with dirty faces, weird haircuts, and trash blowing across an empty parking lot was hardly convincing and just plain lazy.

    2/10
  • When I found this movie in the 2 dollar bin at my local video store, I wasn't prepared for what would happen. When I put it in, I had no idea that by the end of it, I would never be the same again...

Ron Marchini, possibly one of the finest actor's in our time, is sterling in his portrayal as John Travis, the toughest and last cop alive. Adam West does a good job as Ron's, "boss", Prescott. This movie left me with a deep respect for law enforcement, and made me really aware of the o- zone layer problem. I must've watched this movie at least 10 times now, and each time is greater than the one before it. I'll pick up a new line, or phrase that Ron throws around and it will be like the first time again. Ron is my new favorite actor, and I am looking to buy some of his other films.

I'd just like to say thank you Ron, in case you ever see this. I truly love you and your work, you are, simply put, a God.

Starting with some very funny Adam West narration about global warming (written by West himself), we are first introduced to the crazy world of John Travis (Marchini), whose saga even extends to another movie, Karate Cop (1991).

Travis is part of a team of aptly-named "Special Police" run by Prescott (West). They patrol the post-apocalyptic wasteland while listening to incredibly catchy Beach Boys-type songs, and fight the scavs, who are homeless baddies. When called to break up an auction of slave women (Marchini must have a fetish for bondage as he himself is tied up in both this film and Forgotten Warrior), his team, including a guy who resembles a bulked-up Dave Coulier, are shot and killed. Thus leaving Travis as...wait for it...THE ONLY COP ALIVE!

Travis's trademark weapon is a bunch of pipes barely held together by electrical tape, meant to be some sort of multi-barreled shotgun. He is put in charge of the safety of two women, causing him to say in his trademarked deadpan monotone: "I feel like Mother Goose." Their hideout is a baseball dugout, which is apparently immune from radiation of any kind. Travis's goal is to defeat the dastardly Wraith (Chuck Katzakian, the head crime boss in Death Machines (1976) and try to bring the girls to Montana where there is apparently fresh air and water. Will Travis succeed or die trying?

If you printed the word "silly" onto a piece of film, it wouldn't be nearly as silly as Omega Cop. The scavs have funny, nonsensical makeup and Wraith looks 75 years old, and is draped in leather. A major plot point in the movie is Travis's hat. He spies a punk scav wearing his "Special Police" cap and says: "That-guy-has-my-hat". (Remember the monotone.)

For some reason Troy Donahue and Stuart Whitman are on hand to class up the movie, but in actuality, are further muddying their careers. One feels especially bad for Whitman, in his role as a doctor. He is forced to wear ridiculous makeup and spout inane dialogue about the environment.

Like Mickey Rooney in Maximum Force (1992) and Joe Estevez in Money To Burn (1996), Adam West never leaves his one room set. He never talks to Marchini face-to-face. West's one-roomer is welcome but the movie could've used more West antics. He says he can't leave the room because of "Solar Flares". Very convenient. His bolo tie and mullet are not enough.

Omega Cop is a supremely wacky, fun, bizarre, Marchini triumph for the ages!

  • One of the best B-movies made. Great filming location Stockton,CA. I just love the feel that you get from it when the movie first starts. As soon as you see the desert and here that whistling wind your hooked. You can tell that the budget was limited, but they pulled it off great. There is 3 great looking women, they don't have has much of a role as John Travis. But what can you say John Travis is bad, he can just about do it all. Oh yea Adam West is in it too (Batman). He doesn't have much of a role but he's there through the whole movie. But anyway if you get a chance definitely check this flick out, if your a B-movie enthusiast.
  • Being a trash film fan , i liked this one especially for the absurdity of plot and for the absence of any visual confirmation to the story as told. Some nice girls lift up the movie , see the B-Movie review for more. It's a pity that the actor is able to fight ....

    Warning: Spoilers
A post apocalyptic action movie with lots of karate, guns, explosions, strange make up and Batman ( Adam West ) in the command centre. What's not to like? Well....nothing really, it's actually pretty good. In a B-Movie cheese-fest kinda way.

The Director Paul Kyriazi only ever directed 5 films. Mostly martial arts based. He is no Tarantino, nor is he on par with Enzo G Castellari, but he does a pretty decent job. I only have one gripe - now I'm a fan of 70s & 80s grindhouse movies and as such, I love a bit of camera zoom to add some drama, but Kyriazi goes slightly overboard. Practically every scene feature multiple zoom shots. A minor issue really.

The story involves some kind of apocalyptic solar flares which seems to have wiped out most of the population. It's a bit vague and not really explored in much detail, but who cares.

This movie seems to have taken influence from films such as The Bronx Warriors. Some of the makeup is identical. It works. Where it fails to meet the grand scale compared to Bronx Warriors, it makes up for in action. The fight scenes are solid. Not quite as good as some of the other budget martial arts films such as the No Retreat No Surrender series, but a decent effort all the same. The supporting cast are all more than competent. The characters are well defined and they deliver their cheesy dialogue with pride. The two lead characters on the other hand leave a lot to be desired. Ronald L. Marchini who play John Travis comes across as a poor man's Chuck Norris ( Oh how glorious that would have been ) - He's a decent martial artist, but he's no actor. But again, this doesn't seem to matter. After the first few minutes, your brain begins to accept that the character actually talks like he's re-sighting lines and has a facial movement problem. No big deal. Chuck Katzakian who plays Wraith on the other hand, doesn't really have any redeeming features. He doesn't fight, he cannot communicate very well and he looks very hot in his leather Nazi SS uniform.

Adam West has a small role as Travis's man on the radio, which works well and helps to break up the onslaught of running and fighting scenes.

The costumes are good, nothing exciting but good enough. The sets are limited but again, good enough. It looks like they though about the locations and used the budget wisely. Most of the scenes are set in one of the Five locations.

There are some continuity problems, which I suppose should be expected but some are just a little too obvious. Spoiler alert***** One at the end is totally ridiculous. Travis Runs from an exploding building in boots, combats, shirt and cap. He runs towards the lake, he jumps in the air, he dives towards the lake in slow motion.......hold on......first we see that somehow, mid-air, his cap and shirt have disappeared.......next we see that he still has khaki trousers on.....oh no....hold on.....they are shorts!!..........and he is now bare footed.

All in all a hidden gem and definitely recommended for B-Movie fans. The UK DVD release that I have is a double film pack twinned with Psycho cop. There is no release information on the cover or disc at all. There is a sequel called Karate cop, by a different director which I will be reviewing soon on UKFilms net.
  • An apocalyptic, low budget Texas Ranger seduces all the women he encounters with force and not letting them speak. He saves them from the evil gangs lurking around what looks like downtown Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Adam West's character is pulling the strings from what is supposed to be an underground bunker??? But it looks like gray painted cubicle walls. Omega cop, or Travis just wants peace and to swim again. He likes oldies music.
  • My review was written in June 1990 after watching the movie on Southgate Entertainment video cassette.

"Omega Cop" takes the police genre into sci-fi realms in an okay programmer released direct to video stores.

Martial arts expert Ron Marchini toplines as the stoic future cop John Travis (pic's shooting title was "John Travis -Solar Survivor"). Out on a mission to capture slave traders who hold open-air auctions of women, Marchini bulls his way through this modest vehicle with the running gag of beauties gravitating toward him. It's squeaky clean, however, with no nude scenes included.

First femme to fall into Marchini's orbit is blonde Lena, followed by Troy Donahue's brunette daughter Jennifer Jostyn. Finally, Chrysti Jimenez joins his little band, trekking back to a protective bunker manned by Adam West to seek refuge from marauding scavengers (called scavs).

Unfortunately, the bunker is running low on air and food. Rather hopeless situation is resolved unconvincingly with a sudden happy ending of Marchini and the gals swimming in a pristine lake.

Other than very poor makeup (when guest star Stuart Whitman i dying from exposure to the sun it looks as if his face is merely smudged with charcoal), film is technically okay.
