Decent Sequel
I don't know why this sequel has such a bad rep, it's certainly better than "Robocop 3" (which has its moments, but is still sub-par in many ways), or the syndicated television series. How can you go wrong with a script by Frank Miller (comic book writer/artist responsible for "The Dark Knight Returns" and many years on Marvel's "Daredevil") and the director of "The Empire Strikes Back?" In my book, "R2" picks up exactly where the original left off, with more action, better character development, and maintains the sly sense of humor of the first film. Some of the stop-motion special effects look a little aged now (at least on my VHS copy; I haven't upgraded this one to DVD yet) but if you can get past that "R2" is enjoyable for action freaks.

Trivia

The leaking fire hydrant scene, which was filmed on a street paved with red bricks, was actually filmed on Andrews Street in the Freedmen's Town Historical District, located in Houston, Texas.

Quotes

Magnavolt Salesman: MagnaVolt - the final word in auto security. No embarrassing alarm noise, no need to trouble the police... and it won't even run down your battery!
Commercial Voiceover: MagnaVolt! Lethal Response!

Goofs

When Robocop 2 extends his arm to hit Robocop, it is obvious that the extension is a forced perspective trick as the arm becomes at least four times longer to get out of frame. Robocop is subsequently knocked into a wall that previously did not exist, as Robo was standing in front of an open hall.

Crazy Credits

Listed as a Tobor Production. Tobor is Robot spelled backwards.

Alternate Versions

The German theatrical and video release (FSK 18) was cut in several places, which, among the others, are:

  • In the scene, where two hookers beat up a guy, the heel hit in the eye is missing.
  • The scene where a boy shoots Robocop in the head is cut.
  • Bits of strangulation of Lewis by the boy are cut.
  • The cutting open of Duffy's chest is removed.
  • In the scene of the league team holdup, the beating of the shop owner by a little girl is cut.
  • In the scene, where Cain's girlfriend is killed, the neck breaking sound was removed, as well as throwing her on the floor. Altogether, ca. 50 seconds were removed. The DVD version has a "JK" rating and is the first uncut release of the film in Germany.
