  • With Nickelodeon animation's 30th anniversary on the way, I might as well make these little reviews towards Nicktoons. Some in order, some not.

Doug can definitely come off as outdated now considering all the great shows it inspired in the 90s like "Hey Arnold!" or "Recess" or "Arthur", but it can still be funny sometimes. I like Doug's active imagination and heroism alter egos. (Also this may be a guilty pleasure, but I find Mr. Dink and Roger Klotz to be very funny characters. At least their voices is because Billy West and the rest of the actors are great). The animation reminds me of animated "Clarissa Explains it All." A strange comparison, but that's how I feel when observing the backgrounds, colors, and especially soundtrack. Like the opening theme song. Soooo yeah. Doug is my favorite of the three og nicktoons.

All of these praises however apply to the nickelodeon version. Avoid the Disney reboot at all costs.
  • A Nick classic. A cartoon about making the right choices without being preachy, using toilet humour or being dumb.

The show is about a boy named Doug who is new to town where he encounters problems, enemies and a crush.

Doug is a plain Jane kind of character. He is intellectual, mannered, naive, mellow, worrisome and a relatable character.

Skeet is Doug's new best friend. He has a cool design for a character he stands out the most. He is a chilled nice character.

Roger is like a frenemy to Doug. Roger is mean to everyone. He's not really a bully he's more so just an annoying rude character. I like him. Roger is a love to annoyed by character. He does a good job being a villain. they don't always make Doug win. Sometimes Roger has the upper hand. He also has a cool cat that hangs around him.

Patty Mayonnaise Is the girl Doug has a crush on. She has a screechy voice. She is like a near perfect girl.

The Town is filled with interesting adventures and side characters.

Then there is that mutt that no one cares about..

The animation is like doodle art. It's cool. The characters other than Doug are colored with various colors from purple to orange and etc. The Stories are relatable, unrealistic sometimes and fun to watch. It has an awesome Theme Song. I could listen to it for 5 minutes straight. With theme songs, another reason why this show worked was because of in show music. Today's in show music is awful because it gives me a headache.

Overall a fun show that isn't about entertainment but about teaching lessons.

What can be learned? Pro Social skills and how to not panic in situations.

    Verdict: Funny Boy
  • Doug is about a preteen who just moved to a serial town called Bluffington. At first he was the new kid, but soon fit right in with the other kids and neighborhood. Doug Funny, has a hobby on writing his life on his own journal(which is the narration throughout the series). He's also talented in comic book collecting and writing. His parents are very caring, and his older sister, Judy is a grade A beatnik(who's knowledgeable about Shakespeare and acting). As well as Porkchop the pet dog(who the Snoopy of the series).

Through out the episodes, Doug will face many problems, situations, and activities that all preteens go through in their lifetime. At the end, he would learn a lesson, something new, or accomplish something. A lot of the episodes are really funny and memorable to watch. And very 90s theme, as it was set in the early part of that era. This was also one of the earliest and original Nicktoons that aired on Nickeleon(during the golden years).

As I watched this when I was little, I always presumed Bluffington was an actual place. Course I didn't know better back then. And people today might find it weird, as a lot of the characters a different color(ex. Doug's friend Skeeter is blue). But that was perfectly ignorable while watching the episodes. So those who like splice of life related cartoons will like Doug. And those who have kids of their own could introduce them to this memorable animated series.
  • Nickelodeon's saga of adolescent and suburban angst has had a bumpy ride, but overall the quality is pretty good. An interesting concept was the idea of colouring characters' skin to colours corresponding to their personalities. What truly made the series shine, however, was the voice acting.

Billy "Ren and Stimpy" West played Doug, Roger and several minor characters. He didn't go for laughs, choosing to play Doug down and Roger up. It is also impressive to hear him have a conversation with himself.

The award, however, should go to the invaluable Fred Newman. He was Porkchop's every bark and growl, Skeeter's eccentric dither, and Mr. Dink's lisp and chuckle. Moreover, he was responsible for composing the music and sound effects. All that scat, rap, vocals, acapella vocal sounds are all him. Listen next time and you'll here what a genius this man is.

Finally, a word on Doug Preis as Mr. Bone. Am I the only one who thought it was Don Knotts?

"Doug" is the best of the three original Nick toons. It is such a great cartoon, it's no wonder they still air re-runs up to now! Nick's Doug then follows the Disney Doug (Brand Spanking New! Doug), both of them are amazing cartoons for all ages! Recommended to everyone! It's really a great show!
  • I do like Nickelodean in general, I love Rugrats, Angry Beavers, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and Wild Thornberrys(yeah I seem to be in the minority who does love this show), but I dislike shows like ICarly, ChalkZone, Zoey101 and Rocket Power, and Spongebob is nowhere near as good as it was. Doug is by far one of the better Nickelodean shows for many reasons.

I for one loved the concept. It was about reality and real people, as others have pointed out, and this worked wonderfully. The animation is excellent, the music is great, the writing is funny and even touching and the stories are simple yet fun. The characters are also very endearing, especially Doug, who is one of the best title characters in any Nickelodean show, and the voice acting is superb.

Overall, this is another favourite of mine. I just wish it would be brought back. 10/10 Bethany Cox
  • So this was the first Nickelodeon animated show they produced. And by the way this is for the 52 episode-run, not the Disney run. Anyway, it's about a boy named Doug going on realistic situations. As you can see, it is a slice of life show. Honestly, to tell you the truth, Doug Funnie isn't really the most relatable character ever, but there's a few times I did. Just not as much as Arnold Shortman. Animation wise, it's very sloppy in the beginning. But it got better as it went on. The writing can vary depending on the episode, but like animation, it got off to a very slow start. Characters aren't that memorable aside from Doug, Porkchop, Skeeter, roger, and a few others. Music is done in an unique way in that Fred Newman provided it and also does the sound. Voice acting can be wooden to most people and I don't really know who most of them are. That said, Newman and Billy West steal the show, performance wise. All in all, not the best way to start off the Nicktoon brand, but it's no near the worst 90s Nicktoon either.
  • I loved Doug when I was young. Once I had a child I thought it would be great to introduce him to this timeless show. Nickelodeon's Doug tells many stories about fitting in and being unique at the same time.
  • Doug is one of the most memorable cartoons to ever air on the first kid's network. Every episode contained a simple believable plot featuring 11 year old Doug Funnie having some sort of problem that kids could relate to. This is the exact kind of quality TV that they showed on Nick back in the good old days. Shows that didn't have to frequently resort to pop culture references or potty humor to please kids and parents. Now on Nick today they mostly show boring, formulaic, unimaginative and unfunny crap that could give "quality" a bad name.

Classic Nicktoon stars some of the most unforgettable characters, Doug of course but also Skeeter Valentine, Doug's goofy and likable best friend, Porkchop, Doug's independent dog and best non-human friend, Patti, Doug's love interest, Roger Klotz, a rare animated bully that is appealing and very funny, and Judy, Doug's sister obsessed with Shakespeare and arts.

Doug is a Nickelodeon gem that should not (and will never) be forgotten. It's a rare Nicktoon that is wholesome, funny, endearing, and hugely amusing. Give us Doug over "All Grown Up" and "The X's" any day.
  • I used to watch it on Nickelodeon when I was growing up in the 90's but now there are episodes online that I watch to remember. I like Doug when usually hangs out with Skeeter and they are cool together. I like it when Doug imagines that he's Quailman saving the day. He usually solves problems.

Roger may be annoying but I remember Doug imagining Roger as Klotzilla and Quailman saving Patti. Mr. Bone always makes the rules so pointless. Mr. Bone is always after Doug to give him something bad on his permanent record in school. Mr. Bone is tyrannical as the assistant principal so he's the character you love to hate.

A great show to watch and enjoy when you're a kid. I still love it to this day.
  • Eh.... I say this was the bad start of the nerd protagonist, I mean, all this is , is a kid in high school. Nothing much. It would be YEARS before they got the nerd protagonist right, I mean, take a look at Friendship is Magic, and Diary of a Wimpy kid! They get it right! Here, they just made an average life. Friendship is Magic and Diary of wimpy kid made the nerds funny and likable, Doug is just life! I don't want to watch life, I want to LIVE it! Nothing much to say, it's just bland, uninteresting and, as Rainbow Dash, said, NOT COOL! I know some of you are fans of this show, And I don't hate for doing so. But, we have our opinions, and I say, it's bland. P.S. WHY DOES THE TOP TV SHOWS SAYS THAT THIS IS BETTER THAN FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC?!?!?!?
  • I turned 18 in August of 2003...and I still watch cartoons. When I was growing up in the late 80's, early to mid-90's, Nickelodeon was great. Doug was one of the main shows that triggered this greatness. I just loved this show when I was a kid and I'd love to see it again.

Nickelodeon canned this great show alongside Rocko, Salute Your Shorts, Pete & Pete, Hey Dude, Clarissa and the rest of the classics. Nick has been going downhill ever since.

Nick, you want your viewers back? Bring Back Doug!
  • I always loved the cartoon "Doug". It was a great show and, really invigorated my love of art (as I am now working my way toward a degree so that I can perform animation).

As to a comment earlier, about Nickelodeon needing to bring back 'Doug', they can't. They don't own it. They own the original episodes from '91 to '94, but after that, Jumbo (who created the show) was bought out by Disney. Remember the late nineties Doug with the longer hair, shorts and shirt? And Patti's new hairdo, and the BeeBee shaped junior high school? That was Disney's "Brand Spankin' New Doug" or "Disney's Doug". So sorry, but so many of Disney's shows get cancelled after just a few seasons, they have no real long term investment in any of their shows (with the exception of the Mickey Mouse gang, and possibly with Raven Simone's show that has been granted a "stay of execution" by being ridiculously popular, to a point that they would lose a lot of $$$ if they did)

The first Nicktoons show to premiere in Nickelodeon in the early '90s, Doug revolves around the eponymous protagonist who experiences many events in his new home in Bluffington, where his family moved to after his father had a job promotion as a photographer. Doug usually faces many challenges, predicaments, and dilemmas that an average preteen can relate to, writing all his events in his journal. Among the characters are his faithful dog Porkchop, his sister Judy who is obsessed with Shakespeare, best friend Skeeter, his love interest Patti, his nemesis Roger, and his eccentric next-door neighbor Mr. Dink. What makes this show so great is that even though it's supposed to be realistic, it also balances out with a few quirks and crazy antics. Also, Doug's imaginations are very complex. He could have positive, negative, and even hilarious thoughts of impending situations. Recently, I never understood why this show has been given negative ratings all of a sudden. It was a show that reflects on our childhood and teaches us life lessons. It doesn't deserve any of the hate it receives nowadays. IMO, it's the best show on Nickelodeon of all time, that and Rocko's Modern Life, another personal favorite of mind. The Disney version of this show, however, is just awful.
  • Man! I loved this show. I couldn't wait watching it on Nickelodeon every Friday until it went off air. This cartoon, to be honest, helped me a lot as a pubert mainly because it displayed real situations but in a tender and funny manner at the same time. Thus, it helped me confront the aforementioned situations.

Doug had the life of a normal boy but of course, lived exciting and colorful adventures: he had a best friend, a crush, love caring parents, dealt with bullies, weird teachers, and more situations.

This show should be watched by puberts and teens overall because it always delivers a moral through a funny manner.

It also made fun of social situations and even pop culture. This was a very complete cartoon. I remember it with nostalgia.
  • This show was awesome! I used to watch Doug when I was younger, and whoever says the Disney's Brand Spanking New Doug is not as good, what are y'all talking about!? I believe the Disney version of Doug was great too. Doug was an awesome person, along with his best friend, Skeeter, his long-time crush, Patti Mayonnaise, his dramatic, Shakespeare-obsessed sister Judy, his faithful dog Porkchop, and Roger Klotz, the bully. I miss this show!!! Ever since Nickelodeon replaced the classics such as this, Rocko's Modern Life (another old favorite of mine), Hey Arnold!, Pete & Pete, and Kablam! with shows like iCarly, Jimmy Neutron, and Zoey 101 (not that I dislike these shows), Nickelodeon's just not all that good anymore. Even on YouTube there are only one or two real episodes (many of the Doug episodes are dubbed by some stupid jerks who just ruin them by cursing in them). To those of you who have the same opinion: You all are absolutely right! To Nickelodeon: Give the shows like Doug and Rocko's Modern life back to the people that deserve them!
  • Okay, I'd like to start off this review by saying to all those who complained about the differing, colorful complexions of the show's characters: So what? Who cares if they aren't conventional and are more varied than the more realistic and common white, black, and brown? I read in an issue of Disney Adventures magazine that featured some coverage of Disney's version of the titular character, a quote by the series's creator Jim Jinkins stating something along the lines of "It's not what's on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts". Aside from that, he probably simply wanted to make the show stand out more that way (at least, that is probably for the one thing that made it unique or distinctive at the time anyway) and I think that quite sums up his choice for giving a variety of color schemes to the characters. Additionally, this concept was inspired by a margarita stupor he had. Some reviewers here complained about the animation. Well, I'd say that the animation is fine for most of Nick's version's run, the notable exception of this and/or the art style being the episode segment, "Doug Can't Dance". The visuals in that aren't quite as crisp and it was the the first episode produced, but not aired. As for most of the characters' and cities' names, I didn't think much of them or give them much mind when I got into watching this years ago, but now that I think about it, they are odd. Although Beebe and her family's surname, Bluff, seems to suit them somehow. Recently, I found out the fictional town, Bluffington, is based in Virginia (the creator's hometown). An exception being Loretta Lequigly, who is a favorite character of mine, lesser or otherwise. Although in recent years, I thought about the name of the country that is her national descent, Yakistonia, and I wonder if it's supposed to be based on Estonia, seeing how if the "yak" part of the name were removed, the spellings of the fictional country and real country are similar. Just an interesting thought I had about that and wanted to point out that.

Anyway, further into my review about the show and the eponymous character. This show and the main protagonist, Doug Funnie, aren't perfect, but they aren't that bad. I never found him nor any of the series to be boring at all. With the daydreams and fantasy sequences he has as superhero, spy, and adventurer parodies, how can those not engage anybody? But whatever. I find that those were what livened up the show even more. If those aren't enough to engage everybody, then I don't know what else will or do for them. To give my explanation of the show's premise differently from what others already said, it's basically the stories revolving around the everyday problems of your ordinary fifth or sixth grade boy that he recaps via writing in his journal. There may be other shows, cartoons or otherwise, that I like more that Doug, by even so and despite that, I'll still take this as one of the earliest Nicktoons over the more recent, mindless horse manure like Breadwinners and Pig Goat Banana Cricket any day. Doug becomes extraordinary, at least temporarily, through his imaginations to conquer his problems and predicaments. As for the phallic/sexual names of some certain characters that one reviewer pointed out, Mr. Dink, Principal Buttsavitch, Mr. Bone, I never gave thought to those either, especially the first one, not knowing that's supposed to be a sexual reference too. I wish there was a spin-off show or something that focused on other characters besides Doug though. I discovered that recently Nick has considered having a Doug movie get made at one point, but that never came to fruition. I would've liked to see how and if Nick would've done better than Doug's 1st Movie by Disney, which I haven't seen, however, from what I read about it, it doesn't seem to be better than either Nick or Disney's series. I also learned that there might be a revival of Nick's Doug, but I'd rather see a spin-off with other main characters, secondary characters, minor characters, even background characters made. With one taking advantage of several, nameless background characters, especially the female characters at Doug's school. One of which being the light blue-skinned girl who spoke in one episode, "Doug Saves Roger", and who says, "Hey Roger, you got a sign on your back!". I wish there were more moments with her and the other, lesser, female students on the program. And if they were named at all, they could be more conventional names. Again, while the show may not be exactly the best, I can still take it for what it is, even if Doug may not be the best hero. I find the lesser/background characters more interesting, even if we don't get to see them getting into depth much, if at all. I'd like to see more of them. Not without its flaws, I still consider this to be one good start for the Nicktoons.

Doug is a show that just screams I don't care. Right down to the writing, characters(skin colors and names), and to just about everything else. How did this possibly get bought by Disney and turning into a motion picture. Even the theme song and score make you want to go out and buy Miley Cyrus' new album for entertainment. Everyone's voice sounds like a nail scratching a chalkboard. Futurama's Billy West even worked on this show. Nothing really even happens in the show. It's mostly just Doug's day dreams that just make a boring situation seem even boring-er. Doug himself isn't that interesting of a character. All the other characters are stupid and messed up.
  • DOUG follows the misadventures of the eponymous main character, Doug Funnie, his dog Porkchop, his best friend Mosquito (Skeeter) Valentine, and other quirky characters from the fictional town of Bluffington. DOUG was one of the 'Original 5' nicktoons on Nickelodeon, and is by far the best of them all. It is a show about an 11 year-old boy who uses his imagination a lot and gets into funny situations. The reason DOUG was so good was because it is a show that is based on reality and real people; in this case, multi-colored people. Unfortunately, Jim Jinkins and his Jumbo crew moved from Nickelodeon to Disney in 1996, and the show was completely ruined after that. not only was the title changed to BRAND SPANKING NEW! DOUG, but other aspects of the show were changed as well. Hopefully, Nickelodeon will release this show onto DVD or put it back into syndication on Nickelodeon, because it is much better than the garbage that they show now.
  • Doug was great: Good lessons without being preachy, subtle pokes at pop culture, and likable, all-too realistic characters (what school didn't have an overachieving Chalky Studebaker type, or a pair of nerdy Sleech brothers? My school sure did!). I don't think there's any age group or demographic who can't sit and watch and enjoy Doug over and over. From Doug's daydreaming about being Quailman or Smash Adams to solve his dilemmas, to trying to find ways to woo Patti Mayonnaise, I think everyone one of us can relate to excitement of the average world seen through the eyes of an 11 year old.

My only complaints about Doug: I wish the episodes were longer and that there had been more seasons. That's it though.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Whoever hates such an innocent show like Doug is out of their mind. It was the very first Nicktoon to ever debut on Nickelodeon on August 11th, 1991. But it doesn't have any special recognition, like DVDs or airtime. All Nick cares about is releasing garbage shows every second. And they won't let Doug stay up on Youtube, despite the fact that it airs . . . NOWHERE and has NO DVDs??? How retarded is that? (I can't believe the videos that actually stay up there.) ANYWAY, I used to love Doug when I was a kid. The day it first aired, I was 2 years old, so I obviously don't remember. But as I got older, me and my older sister made it a habit of watching Doug every Sunday night, and on weekday nights at 7:00. The show is about a 12-year-old named Doug Funnie, who lives with his parents and older sister in Bluffington. He has several friends, like Skeeter--a blue Weirdo (an obvious reference to Gonzo, lol! Even has a similar nose.) He is also in love with Patti Mayonnaise and has a wacky next-door neighbor named Mr. Dink. Doug usually starts off the episode writing and narrating in his diary (it's a JOURNALLLLL!!!!!) and will usually narrate throughout the show. Doug also has a very Snoopy-esquire dog named Porkchop, and is usually bullied by Roger Klotz, but there are instances where Roger seems like Doug's friend. I love this show, and I can relate to Doug. He usually panics over little things, is a little geeky, and doesn't like to hurt other people's feelings. I felt really bad for Doug in the Christmas episode, when Porkchop was almost put to sleep over a big misunderstanding (he supposedly "attacked" Beebe.) He had gotten Porkchop for Christmas when he was little, and then imagined the thought of spending his Christmas looking at Porkchop's grave. But at least everything was all right at the end!

Doug is the best Nicktoon ever and should've been released on DVD some time ago. 10/10.

    Warning: Spoilers
one of the best cartoons. follows the adventures of 11 year old Doug Funnie who lives in an American town called Bluffington and has a friend called Skeeter. Great characters, plot etc... first saw this on a plane on holiday back in 2000... saw some eps on youtube. quite a good cartoon. certainly beats most of the crap ones on now. the characters and plots and script and all that are good... plots are good. animation style is good too. Ain't seen enough eps to say whether i prefer the Disney or nick version cos most of the eops I've seen are nick ones, with the exception of the ones i saw on the plane that time which were Disney ones (remember the iopening sequence and basic plot). anyway good show. saw the movie a while back... alright.
  • I used to watch this show when I was growing up. When I think about it, I remember it very well. If you ask me, it was a good show. Two things I remember very well are the opening sequence and theme song. In addition to that, everyone was ideally cast. If you ask me, Roger (voice of Fred Playten) was a reall sarcastic bully. I still liked him, though. Also, the writing was very strong. The performances were top-grade, too. I hope some network brings it back so I can see every episode. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that I'll always remember this show in my memory forever, even though I don't think I've seen every episode. Now, in conclusion, if some network ever brings it back, I hope that you catch it one day before it goes off the air for good.
  • If there was one show that I could relate with the most. If there was one show that I could laugh at the most. If there was one show that made me smile the most. This was it.

Doug wasn't just another cartoon show on Nickelodeon, it was a formula for kids on how to live their lives or a comparative narrative for said kids. Well, up until the The Walt Disney Company merely ruined it.

    Network: Nickelodeon, ABC

    Original Air Years: 1991-1994, 1996-1999

"Dear Journal, hi! it's me, Doug."

The main character is obviously a boy named Doug. He's 11 and keeps a diary of his daily activities. Excuse me!.. his journal. C'mon everyone, let's admit it, we all at one point kept some sort of diary or journal. I know I did. It was quite short up until I discovered that old social networking website known as Xanga.

So, Douglas Yancy Funnie was his full name. No, I don't think that was a coincidence. He was definitely funny. Both intentionally and purposefully. He was a shy kid that just recently moved from the fictitious town of Bloatsburg to Bluffington. The show is primarily based on the lives of Doug and his best-friend Skeeter. Doug tries to not act like a loser in front of the kids at Bluffington Elementary, and Skeeter helps him. Doug also had a frequent love interest that he attempts to pursue: Patti Mayonnaise. I know we all had that growing up. The show was simply an average day for a kid growing up in suburbia. The show attempted to both make fun of and glorify the suburban lifestyle of children.

With simplistic stories that were nearly melodramatically portrayed, this show brought laughs to children all around.

I can remember discussions about last night's Doug episode at the lunch table.

On an animation standpoint, this show was superb. Quite the originalism.

As I alluded to a little earlier, Disney bought Doug in 1996. The creator, Jim Jinkins, sold off his animation studio. Yet another sell out for our sad superficial business world. Nickelodeon's Doug had eight hairs and Disney's had nine, an outrage!! But seriously, too many changes made the show feel weird.

Disney actually made Doug into a movie in 1999, Doug's 1st Movie. Haha, with poor reception it was also his last.

    9/10 Stars.

    And…

"Remember kids, the Quail-call is NOT a toy!"
  • DOUG! Now perhaps some of you are wondering why I think so harshly of what appears to be a relatively harmless cartoon. Well let's just say you knew someone with a very similar name. Someone who grew up with that name all his life. And happened to be raised at the exact same time this show came out. Do you think any jokes or funny remarks in connection with this show could possibly affect his life in any negative way? Do you? DO YOU?! But with that said, this was a pretty lame show. I mean the show was pretty much just about a kid who went to high school. And that's it, it was pretty much just about a kid who went to high school. Doug, or Doug Funnie if you want to know his full name, has some very odd friends, like Mosquito Valentine. Bud Dink. His dog, pork chop. And Patti Mayonaisse. What is up with these names, what you didn't have room for Johnny Pictureframe, Larry Toiletpaper, or Susie Contraceptive? Urgh. He spends most of his time going after Patti Mayonaisse because, well, she looks pretty. And apparently that's all he needs. Also, what is up with everybody's skin color in this show? Did the town get infected with radioactive poisoning? On top of that, the music always sounds like it's literally farting out its soundtrack. Listen to some music that's suppose to sound scat. There's also this bully named Roger who constantly tries to make Doug's life a living hell. Why? Because all kids with leather jackets are just bullies now, didn't you know that, it's like an official law! He also travels around with his pet cat named Stinky who probably lives up to his namesake. I think the best way to describe this show is that it's kind of like an early episode of The Simpsons. They're not funny, not well animated, and surround in a world of awkward uncomfortableness. But whereas The Simpsons got funny, Doug just psychologically tortured anyone named Doug for life.
