Jim is the dorky son of a local cement contractor who lives at home and has no direction. Josie is the gorgeous daughter of a wealthy businessman who dreams of leaving town. They find they have a lot in common.
The jump suit that Jim (Frank Whaley) wears has a name patch on it with the name "Darnell." This character is not mentioned at all when William Forsythe is showing him around the store and explaining his duties except that he had to fire the last person who had Whaley's job, calling him a "lazy slacker." He just quips "Even smells like Darnell," after requesting a new set of overalls.
Shouldn't you be cleaning up the store?
Jim Dodge: I've got plenty of time.
Josie: It's a big store.
Jim Dodge: Huge.
Josie: Always smoke cigars?
Jim Dodge: I enjoy a good one after a fine meal. It settles the stomach.
Josie: You're the town liar, right?
Jim Dodge: What?
Josie: I'm sorry, that... ah, that really came out wrong.
Jim Dodge: ...
While walking at gunpoint between the electronics department and the snack bar, Josie finds time to put on a bra.
