A woman who has lost her memory is taken in by a Los Angeles orphanage, and a private eye is enlisted to track down her identity, but he soon finds that he might have a past life connection to her that endangers their lives.
Casting Sir Derek Jacobi as the stutterer Franklyn Madson made sense. Jacobi had gained fame as the Roman emperor Claudius in I, Claudius (1976). Contemporaries of the emperor made fun of his speech impediment by referring to him as "Claudius the Stammerer" and "Clau-clau-clau-claudius."
