A New York official (Hines) avenges his Southern father's racial slaying with the assistance of a doctor (O'Toole) probing her past.
The scene in which Len Madison confronts an elderly barber, one of the mob that lynched his father, was filmed in an functioning early-20th Century barbershop, complete with antique fixtures, located just around the corner from the town square and county courthouse in Forsyth, Georgia. The real-life barber portrayed the character barber. That particular barbershop was chosen as a site location because of its unique character.
