Gary Busey was still a respected actor at the time the movie was made, it wasn't until much later when he'd become infamous for his eccentric personality. In a 1991 article for The Washington Post, Ray Benson said that Busey inhabited the role, remaining broody off-camera for in preparation for the scenes that required it. Dolly Parton remarked that he was "intense."
