In the early 90s, producer Aaron Spelling and TV creator Darren Star struck primetime drama gold with the high school soap opera Beverly Hills 90210. The show laid the groundwork for some good old-fashioned scheduled viewing for homes waiting to see what kinds of trouble the kids at West Beverly would get into. While the series would get to put its characters in some compromising situations like Brandon’s gambling, Brenda‘s pregnancy scare, Dylan’s drug use or Donna Martin graduating, Spelling would explore more steamy stories with the spin-off Melrose Place. The show would crossover stars as Beverly’s Dylan and Kelly befriended Melrose resident Jake. And when Heather Locklear was added to the cast, the show’s popularity would skyrocket.

Melrose Place, which featured one of the most dramatic apartment complexes in TV history, could be opening its doors again.
Deadline is reporting that a reboot of the sudsy Fox primetime soap opera has entered development.
The good news is that many original stars have already been approached to return.
Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton, and Daphne Zuniga are already attached to the project, meaning that if the show gets a formal green light, we’ll be returning to WeHo with some familiar faces.
Melrose Place, a spinoff of Beverly Hills, 90210, aired for seven seasons from 1992 to 1999.
A reboot premiered on The CW 10 years later but was canceled after an 18-episode run.
Is Sydney Andrews returning from the dead again?
Given that Leighton is returning, it seems the new take would disregard the failed 2009 reboot because her character, Sydney Andrews, was killed off on the series premiere.

In a competitive situation, the prolific TV creator of such shows as Beverly Hills, 90210, Sex and the City and Emily In Paris, has signed a big multi-year overall deal at Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. No one is commenting on the size of the pact, but I hear it is in the eight figures and in the top tier of premium overall deals; certainly the biggest we have seen since the end of the strikes.

Outside of the deal, he will continue as executive producer/showrunner on his popular Netflix series Emily In Paris, which is currently filming Season 4, if it is renewed...

Darren Starr's primetime soap opera "Melrose Place" debuted on July 8, 1992, initially sold as a spinoff of the ultra-hot "Beverly Hills 90210." The series followed the denizens of the titular apartment complex, said to be located at 4616 Melrose in West Hollywood, California. "Melrose Place" was a massive success and was replete with all the sex, angst, and topical interpersonal drama that typically appeared in a TV series produced by Aaron Spelling. The show lasted seven seasons and 226 episodes. "Melrose Place" birthed a spinoff in 1995 called "Models, Inc." and was revived (with a new cast of characters) for an additional season in 2009.
On "Melrose Place," actor and professional soccer player Andrew Shue played Billy Campbell, an aspiring screenwriter, cab driver, ad executive, or newspaperman, depending on what season you're watching. The Friday, March 1 episode of “The Young and the Restless” is shaping up to be a must-see, as teased by actor Brian Gaskill, who is currently appearing on the series as Seth, Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) AA sponsor.
On X (formerly Twitter), Gaskill noted, “It’s the beginning of everything” when talking about what fans can expect to happen next on the soap. Making things even more interesting, Friday’s episode sees Nikki learning shocking news. Does Gaskill’s tweet have anything to do with Nikki? You’ll have to tune in to find out!
Although we can’t wait to find out what happens next, one can’t help but wonder if Seth’s recent outings with Jordan (Colleen Zenk) might have something to do with “the beginning of everything” or his true backstory.

Originally, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills spinoff focused on Brit restaurateur Lisa Vanderpump and the sexy, screamy staffers at her swanky 90210 eateries Sur and Pump. A decade in, it’s morphed into a reality TV Melrose Place, with most of the aging cast stepping away from the server life for their own business endeavors, ill-advised music careers, and bad romances — none more notable than the instantly hashtagged fling between aspiring singer and bar-restaurant owner Tom Sandoval and Sur waitress Rachel “Raquel” Leviss. When the dalliance was exposed in March 2023, four episodes into Season 10, Sandoval was living with his girlfriend of nine years, ex-sur bartender Ariana Madix, and Leviss (previously engaged to castmate James Kennedy...

It is not uncommon to happen upon subversive art in the mainstream. You can find the provocative work of R. Crumb, Andres Serrano and Robert Mapplethorpe smuggled into the background of films, or, in many cases, outright adapted as a feature (à la Ralph Bakshi's take on Crumb's "Fritz the Cat"). What you don't expect is to throw on a network evening soap opera and notice that a character's pillowcase is adorned with a design pattern of unrolled condoms -- especially in the 1990s.
MacArthur "genius grant"-winning artist Mel Chin thought the same thing 30 years ago while teaching art simultaneously at CalTech and the University of Georgia. Inspired by the notion of product placement exploding across movie and television screens all over the world, Chin wondered what would happen if he could sneak a conceptually contentious piece of art into the background of an otherwise apolitical show.

John Carpenter's 1998 film "Vampires" -- based on the 1990 novel "Vampire$" by John Steakley -- is 30% vampire movie and 70% Western. It follows a cadre of ultra-masculine, cussing, toxic badass vampire hunters who wear black clothes and treat women like garbage. They are led by a snarling jerk named Jack Crow, played by James Woods, and you may insert your own joke about savvy casting here. This team of vampire hunters is sponsored by the Vatican and receives a hefty payout every time they infiltrate and exterminate a nest of bloodsuckers.
In this universe, vampires hide in desert shacks during the daylight hours, and sometimes merely bury themselves in sand. They are all ghoulish monsters immune to crosses, holy water, and garlic. The vampire hunters stalk into said shacks and fire wooden stakes into vampire chests with specialized harpooning equipment. The hunters also attached tethers to the vampires, then activated a winch outdoors,...

A fresh-faced comedian walks through New York after having woken up and feeding his fish. He's got a nearly beatific smile on his face as he's wished good luck and almost instantly told by those same people (with sarcastic tones) that there's no pressure, because he's been chosen to replace one of the most beloved comedians to ever grace the small screen. He's tall, lanky, with a shock of red hair, and he's just barely reached the age of 30. Everyone from John Tesh to Tom Brokaw to passers-by give him some version of these remarks ("Ya better be as good as Letterman!"), and he takes them all in good stride. He walks into 30 Rockefeller Center, gets ready for his first TV hosting gig, taking over the "Late Night" show on NBC at 12:35 am. He walks into his dressing room, where he proceeds to attempt hanging himself. It's only when...

My Little Pony is arguably one of pop culture’s most enduring brands, and in 2023, it’s celebrating 40 years of friendship and magic.
Remixed in size and color after the 1981 My Pretty Pony fell short in inspiring young buyers, the My Little Pony brand took off with the release of some Gen1 ponies in 1983, followed by TV specials, shorts and animated series bearing the toy line’s titular name. Remixed in size and color after the 1981 My Pretty Pony fell short in inspiring young buyers, the My Little Pony brand took off with the release of some Gen1 ponies in 1983, followed by TV specials, shorts and animated series bearing the toy line’s titular name. For nearly four decades, the Big Three networks dominated television, with any attempts at a fourth competitor quickly trounced. However, on October 9, 1986, a fourth network launched and steadily gained affiliates by offering innovative programming, often appealing to a younger demographic.
Fox has been the most successful network beyond the Big Three, despite a somewhat shaky beginning. The network launched with a short-lived late night talk show initially hosted by Joan Rivers, “The Late Show.” Then, beginning in April 1987, Fox gradually rolled out original primetime programming, starting with Sunday night premieres of two shows whose concepts were new to regular network programming. “Married. . .with Children” brought raunch to the family sitcom genre, raising the ire of conservative watchdog groups to the point that demands were made for a boycott; ironically, this actually brought attention to the series, and it achieved a whole new level of success. “The Tracey Ullman Show” delivered...

Not since Julia Sugarbaker told Marjorie about the night the lights went out in Georgia has a female performer given audiences a feast of camp and fury like Kelly Reilly serves every week on “Yellowstone.” And I, a gay man, am here to say that she ate, no crumbs, she is Mother, and whatever we’ll be saying next year because we no longer live in a world that won’t discuss Reilly’s performance as Beth Dutton. With the first half of Season 5 now available to stream on Peacock with the rest of the series, I need to go on the record about something.
Yes, I watch “Yellowstone” (or as most publications call it “That Show Your Parents Love”). Yes, it is problematic and messy and sometimes cringe, and yeah, Ok, I do tend to bear down on the fast-forward button when the men are talking about, I dunno,...

Fox is grounding all future flights to Fantasy Island, cancelling the reboot after two seasons, TVLine has learned. The May 8 season finale will now serve as a series finale.
“We were very pleased with Fantasy Island‘s fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers,” the network said in a statement, adding: “We’d also like to thank Fantasy Island’s cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series.”

“Emily in Paris” star Lily Collins and the show’s costume designer, Marylin Fitoussi, were both on hand Tuesday night at the series’ For Your Consideration event held in Los Angeles at the DGA theater. But there was a very notable absence: Series creator and executive producer Darren Star.
Star was scheduled to appear alongside Collins and Fitoussi as Netflix ramps up promotion going into the Emmys season, but the “Sex and the City” creator was a no-show. The panel didn’t explain his absence or even remark on it, but it comes amid the Writers’ Guild of America strike that began at midnight on Tuesday. Star is, of course, a longstanding member of the guild.
Along with “Emily in Paris” and “Sex and the City,” Star also created “And Just Like That,” “Melrose Place,” “Younger” and “Uncoupled,” among his many credits.
Representatives for Star didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.
