When the late, legendary filmmaker William Friedkin called Kiefer Sutherland to gauge his interest in playing the lead in the Showtime and Paramount+ film The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the actor hung up almost immediately. But not because he wasn’t interested in working with the director he’d long revered, Sutherland explained. “I thought it was one of my friends making a joke.”
During Sutherland’s appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television panel alongside producers Annabelle Dunne and Matt Parker, Sutherland revealed that Friedkin had exerted a powerful influence on his professional path from an early age.
“William Freakin was responsible for me,” Sutherland said of his desire to work in film. “I was working as a theater actor – I was only 15, 16 years old in Toronto, Canada. My mother was a great theater actor. It’s the community I grew up in and I was very dedicated to. That was...

James Cameron's Titanic participated in a recent Hollywood auction after one of the film's most controversial props fetched the highest bid against other iconic memorabilia.
An auction of iconic Hollywood memorabilia just sold off coveted props from films like Indiana Jones, Spider-Man 3, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Film buffs might bet that the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade would be the top-seller or even the stone tablets Charlton Heston broke in the Ten Commandments. Deadline reports otherwise, though, confirming the prop door that saved Rose in James Cameron's Titanic fetched the auction's highest bid. The iconic prop was sold for $718,750, outperforming Indiana Jones' bullwhip (from Temple of Doom), which sold for $525,000.

"Completely Tormented": How Tom Cruise Was Almost Cast In The Shawshank Redemption (& Why He Wasn't)
Tom Cruise nearly starred in The Shawshank Redemption, but chose not to due to director Frank Darabont's lack of experience. The film's success is attributed to Darabont's direction and casting of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, making it a classic. Despite initial box office failure, The Shawshank Redemption remains highly acclaimed and inspiring without Cruise or Reiner.
Tom Cruise was nearly cast in The Shawshank Redemption, but his preferred director not being able to secure the rights to direct it made it a completely different movie. Directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best Stephen King adaptations, and a major contributing factor to its legendary status lies in its excellent casting and masterful direction of its source material. Based on the 1982 King novel, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, The Shawshank Redemption is perhaps most notable for its engaging story, well-crafted drama, and compelling protagonists played...

Stars: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Michael Cera, Kevin Costner, Graham Greene, Chris O’Dowd, Bill Camp | Written and Directed by Aaron Sorkin
Known for his acclaimed screenplays with The Social Network, A Few Good Men, and TV’s The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin made his directorial debut in 2017 with Molly’s Game, an adaptation of Molly Bloom’s 2014 memoir of the same name. The story initially shows Bloom (Jessica Chastain) as a promising skier whose dedication and calculations cannot match an unseen variable in the form of a frozen pinecone.
The film then cuts to twelve years later, when the FBI arrest Molly for running illegal gambling operations. The story then unfolds across two timelines, with the present showing Molly preparing for court with the help of New York lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba), while the past shows how former skier went from a career-ending injury to establishing herself running high-stakes poker games.

Alaric died nine times in The Vampire Diaries and Legacies, with his final demise happening in Legacies season 4. Alaric's deaths and resurrections became a running joke, but his last death in Legacies marked the end of his character's journey. Alaric's use of the Gilbert Ring kept him alive through multiple close encounters, making him the human with the highest death count in the franchise.
In The Vampire Diaries and Legacies, Alaric Saltzman has "died" a staggering nine times. Alaric is a teacher at Mystic Falls High School turned Vampire Hunter after a Vampire killed his wife, and he has been involved in several close encounters with his prey. Every time he is resurrected, it is for a different reason, but many stem from his use of the Gilbert Ring, which keeps him alive. He recognizes Damon as guilty and that's where his direct relationship with the Vampires of Mystic Falls started.

Questlove and Trisha Yearwood are turning it up to 11.
The musicians have signed on to play themselves in cameo roles in Rob Reiner’s sequel to his 1984 cult classic This is Spinal Tap, which Reiner has begun shooting in New Orleans.
Reiner is reprising his onscreen role as documentarian Martin “Marty” Dibergi in Spinal Tap 2, with the film’s original cast of Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer also returning to play frontman David St. Hubbins, guitarist Nigel Tufnel and bassist Derek Smalls. As any Spinal Tap fan knows, finding a percussionist will be an issue, as the band tends to lose their drummers to freak gardening accidents and other mishaps.
Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks have also signed on for cameo appearances in the new film. The plot of Spinal Tap 2 has the iconic English hair metal rockers reuniting for one final concert.

There wasn't a more popular or influential (or controversial) sitcom in the 1970s than "All in the Family." Created by Norman Lear, the series was a stingingly hilarious satire of American attitudes as the country adjusted to the post-Civil Rights Movement era and coped with the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War.
The genius of "All in the Family" was Lear's ability to make every single one of his main characters behave ridiculously without becoming full-on caricatures. Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) was an unrepentant bigot, his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) was a well-meaning ditz, his daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) was a work-in-progress idealist who went from dopey to fairly sharp as the series progressed, and his son-in-law Michael "Meathead" Stivic represented everything Archie hated about liberals in one preachy package. We all saw a bit of ourselves and the people we have no choice but to call family in the Bunkers, and...

Kelly Ripa from Live with Kelly and Mark is using her acting skills in a new promo for the show’s After Oscar party, and people are noticing something new about her look.

They have not disappointed fans in this latest release, as this could be their best yet.
The trailer features a montage of Kelly and Mark dressing up as characters from Barbie, A Few Good Men, and Dirty Dancing, among others.
The video is a spoof of Nicole Kidman’s famous AMC commercial, which dropped in September 2021 and was meant to encourage people to go to movie theaters.
CNN reports that the commercial is still “just as beloved” as it was when it first came out, and that could be why Kelly chose to emulate Nicole Kidman.

The film, which remains one of his most celebrated works, revolves around a teenager in a small town determined to challenge a strict ban on dancing. With Lori Singer in the movie, Footloose is more than just a mere movie; it’s a captivating journey that effortlessly transports its audience back to the lively atmosphere of the eighties.

Rob Reiner is the multi-hyphenate who has excelled both in front of and behind the camera for over 50 years, starting as an actor before moving into directing. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Reiner was born into the business as the son of performer Estelle Reiner and comedian Carl Reiner, creator of “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” He shot to fame on television with his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic, the liberal son-in-law to buffoonish bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor) on “All in the Family.” The series brought him two Emmys as Best Comedy Supporting Actor (1974 and 1978). Cruise's new Warner Bros. deal hints at a career change, focusing on more auteur-driven films over blockbusters for the iconic actor. While Cruise excels in action blockbusters, a return to smaller projects would showcase his impressive range and acting abilities effectively. An actor like Cruise, who can deliver in both blockbusters and independently-driven films, should continue to challenge himself in both genres to showcase his full potential.
Tom Cruise's string of blockbuster releases throughout his career have helped define generations of storytelling, but a recent announcement could signify a new direction in the A-list actor's career. The last American movie star. The savior of cinema. Maverick. There are plenty of superlatives thrown around Tom Cruise these days—including by us—and for good reason. In an era where audiences increasingly only venture to the theater for familiar intellectual property (if at all), Tom Cruise remains one of the last old school marquee names people turn out for in order to watch the actor.
And more often than not, they’re justified in that trust, because Cruise has spent his middle-age proving that like his most popular alter-ego—Navy pilot Pete Mitchell—he has no intention of turning in his wings. It’s a common observation to even note that the Mission: Impossible movies Cruise made in his 50s were better than the ones he made in his 30s, and his dedication to in-camera stunts in those films, as well as Top Gun: Maverick, have increasingly resembled...

Just last month, Tom Cruise entered a partnership with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films, but what kind of movies does Cruise really want to make? By risking life and limb with real stunts in movies such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise has become the biggest action star on the planet. While the actor will doubtlessly continue in the action realm, a report from Variety states that Cruise would like to return to the early days when he worked on serious, dramatic movies with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, and Paul Thomas Anderson.

Most of the time, less is more. Some of the most impactful performances in movies can be found in those that only last a few scenes. Jack Nicholson is barely in A Few Good Men, but the big courtroom finale is the stretch that we all walked away talking about. Michael Cera's screen time is brief in This is the End, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who said that he wasn't the funniest part of that movie. These kinds of quick but incredible parts tend to make us wonder if their movies would have been better if these characters were given more time to shine. We all know what the answer to that is, though. The reason that these parts are so wonderful is that they only drop in for a second! If they overstayed their welcome, they'd probably wind up not being as special.

In a way, Rob Reiner has come full circle.
Decades ago, before The Princess Bride, before A Few Good Men, Reiner first made his mark as Michael “Meathead” Stivic, the liberal son-in-law to the racist, conservative Archie Bunker on one of the biggest TV shows of the 1970s, All in the Family. Despite his immense success, Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar, but with his new deal focusing on original movies, that could change soon. Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar four times but has yet to receive the coveted award. The Academy Awards don't often recognize performances in franchise movies, so Cruise's return to original films may increase his chances of winning an Oscar.
Tom Cruise is, without a doubt, one of the most accomplished actors in Hollywood. However, one achievement has eluded the star over the course of his 43-year career. Cruise's breakout role was as Joel in Risky Business in 1983, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. He starred as Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun a few years later and quickly cemented himself as one of Hollywood's leading men. A handful of Cruise's other notable credits include Rain Man, A Few Good Men,...

During a 1963 appearance on The Tonight Show, comedian Carl Reiner said that a 16-year-old named Albert Einstein was the funniest person he knew. That Albert Einstein was too young to be the famed physicist, of course. No, the Albert Einstein getting such high praise was a friend of Reiner’s son Rob. Now, of course, the world knows Rob Reiner as the All in the Family actor who went on to direct the films Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men, among other cinematic favorites. And that Albert Einstein — who still doesn’t know why his parents gave him that name — rebranded himself as Albert Brooks and starred in films like Lost in America, Broadcast News, and Defending Your Life. For a new CBS News Sunday Morning segment, Brooks and the younger Reiner ...

Cinematographer Mikael Salomon says he was at one point hired to direct The Mask of Zorro and had considered having Tom Cruise cast as that film's main protagonist.
In a /Film interview, Salomon reveals that 1998's The Mask of Zorro had several A-list actors considered for the lead role before Antonio Banderas took the part. This insider news was well overdue but revealed in time for the film's 25th anniversary, which marks The Mask of Zorro's theatrical release but doesn't account for its lengthy development and production history. Salomon said he was briefly hired in 1993 to direct the film and discovered that Steven Spielberg wanted Tom Cruise as Zorro, which almost happened if the actor didn't decline the offer.
Related Antonio Banderas Would Do Zorro 3 to Pass the Mask to Someone New Antonio Banderas says he would play the masked vigilante, Zorro, one more time if his character passes the mask to a successor.

In 1994, actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner was coming off back-to-back hits Misery and A Few Good Men, with the former nabbing an Oscar for Kathy Bates and the latter receiving four Oscar nominations in addition to scoring big at the box office. Next on his directorial slate was North, a comedy starring Elijah Wood alongside an ensemble including Bruce Willis, Dan Aykroyd, Jon Lovitz, and Reba McEntire. Based on a story by Alan Zweibel, Reiner's film hit theaters on July 22, 1994, and promptly fell flat with audiences, grossing a mere $7 million on a $40 million budget. If that wasn't disappointing enough, North was also met with a dismal critical reception, with many considering it one of the worst films of the year and, in some cases, one of the worst ever made. Particularly brutal in reviewing North was legendary critic Roger Ebert, who gave it a rare zero-star rating and expressed...

Rob Reiner has shared the first trailer for his upcoming documentary taking on the rise of Christian nationalism.
In God & Country, religious leaders and scholars, journalists and historians sound off about the threat of a movement that infuses Christian dogma with far-right politics. At the same time, the documentary seems to strive to make a distinction between the positive aspects of Christianity and the political-fueled variety.
“Christian Nationalism is not only a danger to our Country, it’s a danger to Christianity itself,” tweeted Reiner (A Few Good Men), who is a producer on the project and whose trailer (below) got him trending on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday.
The trailer mixes footage of right-wing marches and the riots of Jan. 6 with various interviews. “This is not a movement about Christian values, this is about Christian power,” says one interviewee, while another notes, “Christianity at its best is...

There aren't many directors quite like Rob Reiner, who has helmed a considerable number of beloved classics from across a variety of genres. His directorial debut was "This is Spinal Tap," a mockumentary considered by many to be one of the best ever made. "The Princess Bride" is a comedic fantasy romance that has been quoted for generations, while "When Harry Met Sally" has become a cultural phenomenon. There are serious films like "Misery" or "A Few Good Men," and his latest feature is "Albert Brooks: Defending My Life," a hilarious documentary about the life and career of one of America's greatest performers. But then there's "Stand By Me," the coming-of-age classic based on Stephen King's "The Body."
"Stand By Me" follows a friend group of pre-teen boys who go on the adventure of a lifetime over Labor Day Weekend 1959 to find the potential dead body of a missing boy.

Rob Reiner has directed some of the most beloved movies in the history of motion pictures. His seven-film run of "This Is Spinal Tap," "The Sure Thing," "Stand by Me," "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally...," "Misery" and "A Few Good Men" is remarkable.
That he transitioned from his portrayal of Archie Bunker's liberal son-in-law, contemptuously dubbed "Meathead," on "All in the Family" to being a first-rate director shouldn't have come as a surprise. His father, Carl Reiner, was one of the greatest comedy writers of the 20th century. No one is a preordained success, but if you decide to pursue a career in entertainment coming out of that environment, you at least have a rock-solid notion of what works.
Reiner also, thanks to his father, developed a social conscience. As he knocked out his string of hit films, he established himself as one of Hollywood's most outspoken celebrities.

Director Rob Reiner confirms that Spinal Tap 2 is very much alive and will go before cameras in a couple of months.
It’s been well over a year since we heard that Castle Rock Entertainment, the brilliant production company that gave us such late 80s/early 90s classics as When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men and Before Sunrise, was reforming. After a stellar run, the company peaked in the mid-90s and was eventually folded into Warner Bros by 2002.
However, Castle Rock Entertainment relaunched its film division in October of 2022, still under the ownership of Warner Bros, and last summer the production company announced its first project: This Is Spinal Tap II.
The legendary ‘rock doc’ spoof was (Castle Rock Entertainment co-founder) Rob Reiner’s first film as director and it was announced last year that he would be returning to make the sequel. Original stars Micheal McKean,...

1993 was a watershed year for cinema, with a wide range of movies that appealed to all audience types, revolutionizing how audiences watched films. The diversity of popular and niche films in 1993 was unmatched, with blockbusters like Jurassic Park and intellectually substantive films like Schindler's List both doing well at the box office. While other years in the 1990s had their standout movies, none could compare to the depth and ground-breaking achievements of 1993, making it the best year ever for movies.
While the entirety of the 1990s was an incredible, ground-breaking time for movies, 1993 stands out, not just as the best year for films that decade — but potentially as the best year for movies ever. The era of the modern blockbuster began to take shape in the 1980s, but the highest-grossing movies of the 1990s were revolutionary when it came to what films would look like for the next 30 years. When I heard Rob Reiner was planning to direct a documentary on a true comic icon and genius named Albert Brooks, I thought “Now this will be good!” Reiner is not only a smart and talented filmmaker in his own right, but also a longtime friend of Brooks, with whom he went to high school and even co-starred with him in drama department productions. I am happy to report this HBO Original documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, premiering Saturday night and then streaming on Max, not only more than met my high expectations but exceeded them.
Set in a plush dark red restaurant booth, the film is anchored simply by a conversation between Reiner and Brooks. The visual is almost identical to the opening scene of Brooks’ 1981 Modern Romance, where he and his girlfriend are breaking up,...

Back in the soap opera glory days of the 1980s, I remember well Demi Moore‘s short stint on the popular “General Hospital.” With her distinctive gravelly voice, movie star beauty and strong personality, it was obvious that the small screen couldn’t contain her, and that she would go on to bigger things.
Demi Gene Guynes was born on November 11 in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Following a difficult childhood, she left school her junior year and did some modeling before meeting and marrying musician Freddy Moore, with whom she co-wrote three songs. She had a couple of small film roles before landing the “General Hospital” gig in 1983. Then a series of popular films beginning with “Blame It On Rio” in 1984 led to an impressive string of blockbuster films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, making her one of the biggest stars of the era.

The Social Network 2 is hindered by Facebook's last 13 years, which have seen the platform facing controversies and becoming less popular. David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin have expressed interest in making a second film, but the details of a potential follow-up have not been revealed. Mark Zuckerberg's controversies and public image, as well as the changing landscape of social media, pose obstacles to creating a successful sequel.
The Social Network 2 has a lot of potential, but after Facebook's last 13 years, it might be impossible to make the sequel. Based on The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, The Social Network was released in 2010 and directed by David Fincher, who co-wrote the screenplay with Aaron Sorkin. The film chronicled Mark Zuckerberg's experience creating Facebook, revealing some of the challenges he faced.
The Social Network was one of the biggest movies of 2010, premiering just four years after Facebook became available to the public.

If somebody mentions the movie A Few Good Men to you, there’s a better-than-average chance the first words that come to your mind will be “you can’t handle the truth!” The film, for better or for worse, will always be linked to its iconic catchphrase, which is yelled out by screen legend Jack Nicholson during the climactic courtroom scene. The actor on the receiving end of the line, of course, was Tom Cruise; at the time the film was released, Cruise told us how much he enjoyed shooting that particular scene. Legend, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Cruise, is a unique cult classic fantasy film that stands out in both their filmographies. Despite being a box office flop, the film gained its cult status through its stunning visuals and the exceptional performance of Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness. The director's cut of Legend, released in 2002, with its different ending and original score, helped solidify its cult classic status by offering a morally gray narrative and questioning the concepts of good and evil.
While a number of '80s movies have become cult classics, one of the more curious films to receive such status is the 1985 film Legend starring Tom Cruise. Directed by Ridley Scott, Legend is an epic fantasy adventure film that follows a young man named Jack (Tom Cruise) who must confront and defeat the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) as he plans to curse the...

Moviegoers were recently treated to the release of Dumb Money, a true story based on the 2021 book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich. The book and the film chronicle the true story of the GameStop short squeeze of stock, which caused major financial consequences for certain hedge funds and led to large losses for short sellers. In essence, 140 percent of GameStop's public float had been sold short, and that led to a rush to buy shares to cover those positions as they rose, causing it to rise even further.
It's a film that has been compared to David Fincher's The Social Network because it's a true story that seems too crazy to be true. That being said, The Social Network's story is a bit more by the numbers and is essentially a tale of greed that led to the founding of Facebook, which was turned into a piece of...

Kevin Bacon may have taken a paddle to the ass in Animal House and an arrow through the throat in Friday the 13th but he gained his first true fame with 1984’s Footloose. From there, with movies like Flatliners, A Few Good Men and, perhaps most importantly, JFK, it seemed like Kevin Bacon had worked with just about every major name in Hollywood. Thus, the greatest movie challenge of all time was born: Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
But, as he explained on a recent episode of Podcrushed (via Entertainment Weekly), Kevin Bacon initially thought the Six Degrees game was making fun of him. “I thought that, and this is my own acting insecurity — impostor syndrome — I thought that the joke of it was that the great actors could be connected to a loser actor like me…They were saying, ‘Look, can you believe he can be connected by Meryl Streep?...
