Dr. Mark Sloan has a knack for getting into trouble, negotiating the twists and turns of mysteries and solving crimes with the help of his son, Steve, a homicide detective.
Mary Tyler Moore was sent a script once, for her to make a guest appearance in an episode of this show, but she turned it down, because she felt it didn't suit her. Dick Van Dyke also never appeared in her hit series Mary Tyler Moore (1970). Both had previously co-starred on The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961).
Dr. Mark Slone often undertakes actions which would result in evidence and investigations being compromised. Since he has never been a police officer, these actions could result in cases being dropped or overturned upon appeal. There is no way that a District Attorney would allow Slone and his colleagues to perform the actions that they do in the show.
