The first twelve episodes were based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Larroquette is a recovering alcoholic in real life.

The original working title of the series was "Crossroads" but NBC insisted on "The John Larroquette Show". Larroquette did not want his name in the title.

Larroquette owns the sign in John Hemingway's office that read "This Is A Dark Ride".

The tone of the show was lightened after the first season.

John Hemingway's name is a shout-out to Ernest Hemingway.
