Debuted in May 1939, the “Dark Knight” soon took on a coveted status as the “Caped Crusader” of Detective Comics aka DC. Ever since the character has become a central member of the Justice League and appeared in several editions and adaptations with several big-list names helming the live-action version. However, of the many such actors, Kevin Conroy comes off as arguably one of the most cherished ones to play Batman across several performances.
Featuring a distinctive voice, the late American actor has appeared in more than a staggering fifteen movies, close to four hundred television episodes, and even reprised his role in about twenty-four video games. An icon in his arena, Conroy’s iterations of Batman have become synonymous with the gritty and strong tone of speech associated with the character, and here are five of his most memorable such outings.

It’s been almost half a century since superheros from the Marvel and DC Comics started to gain popularity in the entertainment industry, as Superman and Batman became some of the first to attain mainstream attention.
While several iterations of the superhero exist in different forms of entertainment today, many consider Christian Bale’s performance as the titular protagonist in The Dark Knight trilogy to be a classic.

While hardcore fans of comic book films believe that Bale’s version of the hero was iconic, they also believe the 1993 animated feature of the character titled Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was even greater.
Since this film received so much love after its release in the ’90s, people cannot deny its legacy and mark in history.

Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm is a film that a lot of fans remember fondly, being the first theatrical release from DC that was directly related to Batman: The Animated Series. However, fans would be shocked to know that despite the solid premise that the film had and its status as a classic, the original plans for the film were very different.

Tons of Batmans have shown off their geniuses and strength to audiences over the course of time, but not every single one of them managed to leave their mark on the viewers’ minds. While some of the projects’ failure was understandable, some others were truly done injustice to — like the one film from the DC Animated Universe that Mark Hamill will always hold close to his heart.

And even though Hamill has lent his voice to multiple other blockbuster masterworks featuring the Joker including Batman: The Animated Series, this one particular box office bomb still continues to rule his heart for reasons all too valid.

Sometimes your entire world can change in a single moment. This would lead Tia Carrere to land a role in the film Aloha Summer. She says she was super nervous because she had never acted before and hadn’t even thought of it as an option in her life but she did it! Ms Carrere grew up wanting to be a singer…. and she did that too!

Kevin Conroy, was one of the most celebrated actors in the entertainment industry who gained recognition after he voiced the character of Batman in 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series. He had appeared in various television series, including Search for Tomorrow, Dynasty, Ohara, and more, but what made him stand out was being the voice behind one of the most loved characters in DC Comics.

The disappointment that comes from seeing a great film do poorly at the box office almost certainly never goes away. One of the most important Batman storytellers of all time, Bruce Timm, does not seem to understand how good Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is.
Timm, who produced Batman: The Animated Series and co-directed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, discussed how much he “cringe[s]” at the beloved animated 1993 Batman flick in an interview from last year. He noted that while the 1990s were a major decade for animation in motion pictures, the Kevin Conroy starrer was initially intended to be a television special.

Actor Kevin Conroy has been synonymous with Batman ever since he rendered his voice to the character in Batman: The Animated Series. The actor has gone on to lend his voice to Batman and Bruce Wayne in other media such as the Arkham games as well as WB’s DC Animated Universe films such as Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
While Conroy has been known for his particular brand of performing the iconic superhero, he reportedly had issues with the way Zack Snyder depicted him in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The voice actor reportedly had issues, particularly with Batman’s penchant for killing in the film as he is famously known for his ‘no-kill’ rule.

The Joker is one of Batman’s greatest adversaries, and it is difficult to imagine a successful Batman universe that does not eventually end up casting a Joker for itself. For several projects, it was Luke Skywalker actor himself, Mark Hamill. At the end of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker lays out his worldview in plain terms. After testing his theory that “one bad day” could make even the most decent person into a madman like himself, the Joker tells his nemesis, “It’s all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for… it’s all a monstrous, demented gag!”
Even more than the grisly sights of The Killing Joke—in which the Clown Prince of Crime sets out to prove his theory by brutalizing Batgirl Barbara Gordon and tormenting her father Commissioner Gordon—that line has set the course of Joker stories of the past several decades. Fans and creators alike try to push the Joker to edgier extremes, forgetting how Batman answers when his nemesis asks why he isn’t laughing. “Because I’ve heard it before,” he responds. “And...

The Clown Prince of Crime will never wreak havoc on Gotham again — at least not through one of his most famous portrayers. Mark Hamill has reiterated that he won’t return to play The Joker so long as Kevin Conroy is not his Batman.
As per a Q & A at Fan Expo San Francisco, Mark Hamill said his days of voicing The Joker are a thing of the past, telling attendees that he “won’t voice the role unless it’s opposite Kevin Conroy’s Batman.” He added, “Without Batman, crime has no punchline,” quoting the episode “The Man Who Killed Batman” from Batman: The Animated Series, the first time he played The Joker. This doubles down on previous statements Hamill made about reprising The Joker in relation to Conroy. “They would call and say, ‘They want you to do the Joker,’ and my only question was, ‘Is Kevin Batman?...

Recently Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director behind “The Shape of Water,” “Nightmare Alley” and “Pinocchio,” said that collecting physical media, in the midst of streamers unceremoniously deleting thousands of titles, is nothing short of a “moral imperative.” And we agree. Each month new home video releases – of both classic films and newer titles – come out. And each one is cause for celebration. With that in mind, we want to highlight the very best titles of every month.
With the insane games that the various streaming platforms are pulling, in terms of removing content from their services (sometimes projects that were made specifically for those platforms), an added emphasis has been placed on home video. When Batman: Mask of the Phantasm hit theaters on Christmas Day, 1993, it had been set up to fail. Warner Bros. initially ordered the film as a direct-to-video release in the wake of the massive commercial and critical success of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series. But the studio abruptly shifted course with a theatrical rollout without extending the production timeline or planning a marketing campaign, all while expanding the budget. Despite costing a mere $6 million, the film, released during a creative and commercial resurgence for DC’s dark superhero, couldn’t even recoup its budget at the box office.
And yet, what by rights could have ended up as a mere footnote in the long history of Batman media now stands three decades later as a beloved crystallization of the series that birthed it and, for many fans, a canonical adaptation. Much of this can be attributed to...

The Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight. The World’s Greatest Detective. The Bat. He is vengeance. He is the night. He is, of course, Bruce Wayne – aka Batman. And for 84 years and counting, ever since his introduction in Detective Comics #27 on 30 March 1939, Bill Finger and Bob Kane’s Guardian of Gotham City continues to dominate popular culture.
A superhero with no actual superpowers (except for fat stacks of Benjamins), Bats is – in essence – just a man trying to turn his pain into something positive; a vigilante in a cowl and cape who’s capable of evolving with the times to be whatever kind of hero the moment asks for. It’s no wonder such a dynamic array of filmmakers – from Leslie H. Martinson to Tim Burton among many, many others – have been inspired to send up the Bat-signal on the big screen in live-action and animation over the years.

“…young ‘Bruce Wayne’ and ‘Andrea Beaumont’ begin a relationship after meeting while visiting their respective parents' graves. During this time, Bruce makes his first attempts at crime-fighting.
“While he succeeds in foiling robberies, he is discouraged that the criminals do not fear him. Bruce becomes conflicted about how to honor his parents; whether to defend ‘Gotham City’ to avenge their deaths, as opposed to their likely desire to see him as a married man.
“Bruce proposes marriage to Andrea who accepts. However, she abruptly leaves Gotham with her father, businessman ‘Carl Beaumont’, ending the engagement in a ‘Dear John’ letter. Heartbroken, Bruce assumes the mantle of Batman.”

We knew something was on its way from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski but we weren’t expecting this: a new animated movie from Warner Bros. Animation and WB Home Entertainment.
Straczynski described it as: “Classic Babylon 5: raucous, heartfelt, nonstop, a ton of fun through time and space, and a love letter to the fans.”
It might not be as well known as his comic-book work, but Straczynski actually has a background in animation – writing episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Captain Power, The Real Ghostbusters, and other 1980s action favorites.
We know that Bruce Boxleitner is back – which is also fitting, as he’s got some hefty voice acting chops, reprising his most famous other science fiction role for the 2012 show Tron: Uprising – but we’re going to have to wait another week for more details.

I love a good Batman movie as much as the next person, but one thing that's always bugged me is how often Bruce Wayne is treated as a bit of a cipher in his own story. Screenwriters and directors are all too eager to get to the more entertaining business of the supervillains, repeatedly giving us the hoary old imagery of his parents' murder and the billionaire moping around his mansion before we get to the fun stuff.
That flaw is comprehensively addressed in "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm," the 1993 theatrical release originating from the Emmy-Award-winning animated TV series. To date, it is the only Batman film to fully invest in Bruce Wayne and his shadowy alter ego as a character just as interesting as Gotham City's colorful gallery of crooks.
The stylized animation gives us a hunky Bruce Wayne who literally puts the square jaw into the term "square-jawed hero,...

Don’t know if you’ve heard, but Batman is in The Flash movie. Although the film stars Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen of two worlds, the movie also features not only Ben Affleck’s Batman of the Snyderverse but the return of Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight.
With his appearance in the canceled Batgirl movie all but buried, The Flash will mark the first time Keaton has donned the cape and cowl since 1992’s Batman Returns. But a Batcave shot included in a recent TV spot for the film hints at a longer legacy for Keaton’s Batman, one that we unfortunately didn’t get to see back in the heyday of the Burtonverse.
In the teaser, we get a brief glimpse at several Batsuits, giving us a better look at the unseen history of Keaton’s Batman. Some of these suits are familiar — two of them...

When a pair of "Tiny Toon Adventures" animators tried their hand at reinventing Batman for the small screen back in 1992, they created the definitive version of the Dark Knight for many a '90s kid. Led by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, "Batman: The Animated Series" was a big hit for Fox Kids for the three years of its airing. The show re-envisioned Batman for a new generation, picking up where Tim Burton left off with 1989's "Batman" and reintroducing the dark tone that had been so central to the character's inception.
With a Superman film in the works, Warner Bros. Animation president Jean MacCurdy asked Timm if he wanted to cartoons with the DC superhero (via Comicology). Timm and Alan Burnett ("Batman: Mask of the Phantasm") partnered up to work their magic with Superman. Once again, they reinvigorated the character, bringing a distinctive design language, nuanced characters, and mature...

Nobody expected Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm to be as great as it was – except the people who made it. Thirty years on, they look back at an animated classic – and the actor who gave the Dark Knight a heart.

Batman had died.
That’s what it felt like when word came through that Kevin Conroy, the man who had voiced the character for 30 years in animated films, TV shows and beyond, had passed away after a short battle with cancer in November last year. The impact of his loss was deeply felt across generations of Bat-fans. For many, Conroy had been the beloved Batman of their childhood. He is an inextricable part of the Dark Knight’s legacy. "Batman: The Animated Series" perfectly captured the essence of its comic source material, from the costumed characters of Gotham City to the personality of the metropolis itself. However, it only occasionally adapted comic storylines. Compared to the contemporaneous "X-Men" cartoon which slavishly recreated comic arcs, the "Batman" creative team was more comfortable putting their own spin on things. That's how Harley Quinn was born, after all.
The series did directly adapt from the comics on occasion, but even that came with stipulations. Paul Dini, the series' head writer and producer (not to mention the creator of the aforementioned Miss Quinn) had this to say in issue #99 of "Back Issue magazine:
"It's hard to adapt a comic directly for animation. The storytelling and pacing are different, and there might be other elements like excessive dialogue or graphic violence that don't translate well from one medium to the other. In the case...

It's hard to pin down the quintessential take on the Dark Knight, but nothing comes close to "Batman: The Animated Series" as far as animation is concerned. The show defined an era of superhero television in more ways than one. It spun off a universe of animated projects following DC's greatest characters, including "Justice League." Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were cemented as the signature voices of Batman and the Joker, respectively. The neo-noir aesthetic that filled out "Batman: The Animated Series" became synonymous with the character, but the acclaimed series also borrowed from its predecessors, too.
The musical score in "Batman: The Animated Series" is exquisite, to say the least. The composer, Shirley Walker, perfectly captures the heightened world of Gotham City and its players without feeling corny or campy. It also sounds quite similar at times to the Danny Elfman theme in Tim Burton's "Batman." This is no coincidence.

Few modern characters have captivated audiences and storytellers alike quite like Batman. Ever since writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane debuted the character in a 1939 issue of Detective Comics, the Dark Knight has demanded interest, first in comics, but soon also in TV, games and of course, movies. Because, goodness, there sure are a lot of Batman movies.
It didn’t take long for The Caped Crusader to arrive on film, making his theatrical debut all the way back in 1943 with a pair of Columbia Pictures serial films, and since then, the character’s cultural imprint has grown exponentially, with more than nine actors taking on the role in film – in fact, we’re about to have three live-action Batmen at the same time with the arrival of “The Flash.”
If that sounds like the Batman timeline is a confusing one, it can be, especially once the DC Multiverse opens up.

The Caped Crusader is not just one of the most iconic DC Comics characters of all time, he’s also one of the most prominent figures in the last few decades of blockbuster cinema. While Adam West kicked things off with the 1960s TV series “Batman” and subsequent film, filmmaker Tim Burton gave the character a big screen blockbuster with 1989’s “Batman.” Michael Keaton filled the role that was later inhabited by the likes of Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck – and that’s not to mention the bevy of animated iterations that have come and gone over the years.

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.

Photo: Blockbuster Movie Night At Blockbuster It’s a Friday night in 2007 — My dad and I take a trip out to our local Blockbuster to pick out a movie to bring back to watch with my family. Walking through the plate glass doors, my eyes widened as they ran across aisles of shelves lined with DVDs. I walk down the aisle, eyes bouncing from cover to cover of each option that lay right at my fingertips. We make our way quickly through the horror film section, my dad ushering me away from Jack Nicholson’s wide-eyed grin on the case of ‘The Shining’, and into the animated movies. My father lets me pick what movie to choose for tonight — as a seven-year-old boy, this is far too much power to handle. With so many options that all looked so fantastic: ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Batman: Mask of the Phantasm’, ‘Chicken Little’, how was I expected to choose?...

Unlike the floundering cinematic universe of DC Comics, the animated department has managed to create stellar adaptations of fan-favorite properties time and again. Sure, not all of them are amazing, but even the worst ones manage to have some redeeming qualities, even if that’s just the gorgeous art style. And now, to take things one step further, Batman: Death in the Family will mark Warner Bros. Animation’s first stab at interactive storytelling.
The trailer, which was released today, is a re-imagining of a story arc from the late ‘80s called Batman: A Death in the Family. In it, Batman and Robin’s relationship experiences some serious friction, which eventually leads to Jason Todd’s iteration of the Boy Wonder running away from home. The story follows Todd’s search for his biological mother and ends with the Joker getting involved with a plan that leads to Todd and his mother’s deaths.
