Showgirl Deloris Van Cartier returns as Sister Mary Clarence to teach music to a group of Catholic students whose run-down school is slated for closure.
Deedee Magno, one of the music students Sister Mary Clarence (Whoopi Goldberg) teaches, was once a member of the early 1990s pop group The Party, a group manufactured by Disney.

When Rita is laying on her bed listening to her Walkman, learning the music (just before her Mom arrives home and tells her she can't be in the choir or competition), Rita is looking at a page full of text. Then, just after, it's a page of music instead.
The cast sings and dances to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough".
On some TV broadcasts, a small cut is made during the first musical number to obscure an obscenity, when a character proclaims, "I was a ho" during the number.
