France, 1625: Young d'Artagnan heads to Paris to join the Musketeers but the evil cardinal's disbanded them - save 3. He meets the 3, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and joins them on their quest to save the king and country.
The dungeon scenes were filmed at Seegrotte, Austria: an old mine which was flooded early in 1900's due to an underground water source and was later used by the Nazi's during the second war to conduct military research. The site is now open to the public and famous for its underground lake. The scene decoration of one of the prison cells, as well as the dragon-head boat are still kept intact at Seegrotte and could be visited.
Remember, Kings come and Kings go but one thing remains the same. And that is me.
Porthos mocks Rochefort as having the name of "a smelly cheese". Not only are the character and the cheese from different regions with different names and entirely different pronunciations (Roquefort for the cheese, Rochefort for the character); but the cheese was given its denomination in 1925, almost three centuries after the events of the film.
Two scenes were cut from the German cinema version to secure a "Not under 12" rating (The murder of the prisoner is cut completely (ca. 13 seconds) and the death of the bald headed man in the prison at the end is shortened (ca. 6 seconds).) Second DVD release is uncut ("Not under 16") and bears the note "Uncut version" on the sleeve.
