France, 1625: Young d'Artagnan heads to Paris to join the Musketeers but the evil cardinal has disbanded them - save 3. He meets the 3, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and joins them on their quest to save the king and country.
A rival TriStar Pictures version was also in development at the same time as this movie, with Johnny Depp and Director Jeremiah S. Chechik attached. Ultimately, it fell through. Oliver Platt had also been approached to play Porthos in that version as well. Interestingly, Chechik directed Platt in Tall Tale (1995).
I hope we're not interrupting!
Rochefort: No, on the contrary. You're right on time!
In the final fight between D'Artagnian and Rocheforte, D'Atagnian stabs Rocheforte on the left side of the row of buttons, five buttons down. We cut away to D'Artagnians face and in the next shot, the sword is on the right side of the row of buttons, three buttons down.
Two scenes were cut from the German cinema version to secure a "Not under 12" rating (The murder of the prisoner is cut completely (ca. 13 seconds) and the death of the bald headed man in the prison at the end is shortened (ca. 6 seconds).) Second DVD release is uncut ("Not under 16") and bears the note "Uncut version" on the sleeve.
