  • In 1988 there was a Channel 4 funded film called Stormy Monday that starred Sting as a nightclub owner in Newcastle mixed up in a plot that involved Sean Bean, Tommy Lee Jones and Melanie Griffiths as a waitress in the north east.

Finney which was made by ITV six years later is a spin off, a presumed prequel to the film, with David Morrissey taking over from Sting as Finney.

Both Morrissey and John Woodvine stand out in this series and Morrissey is certainly more memorable in the part than Sting.

Again Finney is a nightclub/Jazz club owner involved with local Newcastle gangsters, feuding families and the mystery of who killed his criminal father.

Shades of Get Carter and Gangsters with rivals who all have something to hide. However the series had a lukewarm reception and has largely been forgotten.

    Warning: Spoilers
This long forgotten 6 part TV serial is a sequel of sorts to the 1988 movie STORMY Monday which portrays Finney a nightclub owner mixed up in Newcastle's seedy underworld not quite as noirish as the movie and missing the original cast but still an excellent crime saga never released on DVD in the UK but was released in north America on region 1 DVD.

predates both the sopranos and underbelly but was actually not the first of its kind in england (the fantastic OUT springs t mind and the overly stylised GANGSTERS) its worth a look if you like this kind of thing or have seen the original movie.
