Joyce Bulifant (Emily Wallace) is the real life mother of John Asher (Gary Wallace).
In the first episode, Gary says that creating Lisa is possible because he saw it in a John Hughes movie once. The movie of course is Weird Science (1985), which spun off the series.
During the making of the series, Vanessa Angel (Lisa) was introduced to her husband Rick Otto by Lee Tergesen (Chett Donnelly).
Vanessa Angel was originally set to leave the series when she was cast as Xena in Xena: Warrior Princess (1995). However Vanessa couldn't take the flight to New Zealand because was sick with flu and Lucy Lawless was cast.
Kelly LeBrock, who played Lisa in the 1985 movie, was asked to play Lisa again in this TV adaption, but turned the role down.
The show is credited from 1994 to 1998. However all the episodes finished filming in 1997 but the show was cancelled without airing the final 6 episodes. The final 6 were shown in 1998 during syndication reruns.

In the episode "Quantum Wyatt", Wyatt Quantum Leaps into different people's bodies. When he looks in the mirror, he sees the body of the person he leaped into. The is an obvious reference to the hit TV show, Quantum Leap (1989). Michael Manasseri, who plays Wyatt Donnelly, once guest starred in an episode of Quantum Leap - 'Return of the Evil Leaper'
As of 2017, Weird Science is currently in development for a comeback. It's unsure yet if it's a movie or TV show, but it's known it's a reboot with an all new cast.

In the season 3 episode "Free Gary", the episode parodies Baywatch. Coincidentally, Vanessa Angel did appear on Baywatch for 2 episodes in 1992. The title of the episode is also a parody of "Free Willy" (1993)
Scenes from Weird Science S01E01 were parodied by Kevin Hart in Extreme Movie (2008).
In the series 3 episode "What Genie", Lisa's new master makes her wear the Genie costume from the classic series "I Dream of Jeannie", as well as visual gags of The Genie from Aladdin and various other Genie incarnations as a gag that Lisa herself is a genie.
Seth Green auditioned for the part of Gary. He later guest appeared in an episode as a high school student.
Emma Caulfield Ford's performance as Phoebe Hale in season 3's "What Genie" was impressive enough to 'Andrew K Weiss' that he later cast her as Anya in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"
