While Earhart and Noonan are over Africa, the left engines starts to backfire severely, so Earhart makes an emergency landing. In the next scene, the plane is shown taking off without any problems. Not explained are what caused the backfiring, where the landing was made, who fixed the engine, and what kind of repair was done.
