Films made by the likes of Netflix seem to have one chance to get noticed – and then they’re falling away, almost forgotten. A few thoughts.
You might just have noticed, but we’ve just had the Academy Awards come and go, with a traditional studio taking home the top prize. Snapping at their heels, streaming services spending a lot of money to promote their wares, but not winning a lot of gold.
Among this year’s streaming contenders: Maestro, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Nyad, Society Of The Snow and Rustin. Some smashing films there: my fear is, in some cases, that’s going to be pretty much the last we’ve heard of them.
The unsuccessful Oscar campaign is nothing fresh of course. In recent years though, streaming services – Netflix in particular – have allowed hard cash to flow into their attempt to earn Academy Awards. Of those streamers,...

Why do we love Hugh Grant? Let us count the swoony ways. Is it the adorably impish smile and mischievous blue eyes? The floppy hair? Or the self-deprecating charm? In a word, yes! The dashing British actor has set our hearts (and minds) aflutter ever since his hapless commitment-phobe Charles stumbled through his “I think I love you” speech to Andie MacDowell’s independent American in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral (on Prime Video). He was adorably tongue-tied again the following year in Emma Thompson’s Oscar-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (on Pluto TV) as Edward, whose long-repressed romantic feelings for Elinor Dashwood (Thompson) set up a happy ending. A few years later, we fell just as hard for his diffident, divorced London bookseller as fellow rom-com favorite Julia Roberts’ movie star did in 1999’s Notting Hill (also on Prime Video). Grant played a naughtier...

In honor of the Sundance Film Festival’s 40th Edition, The Hollywood Reporter is looking back at the reviews of some of the festival’s biggest premieres. Four Weddings and a Funeral premiered in Park City in 1994, going on to become a classic of the 90s rom-com oeuvre. THR’s original review is below:
Four Weddings and a Funeral, which premieres tonight as the kickoff to this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is a romantic comedy in the grand old style of top hats and champagne. Yet underneath its tony trappings and frothy topping, this Gramercy release is unfortunately layered with an inner unkindness and coated with a snide incivility that saps its overall merriment. Still, it should win some mixed applause among select-site audiences starved for romantic mirth in this block(buster)-headed age.
Chipper Charles (Hugh Grant) finds he’s best man in many a wedding but never the groom.

A 'Love Actually' sequel could finally be in development.Bosses at Universal Pictures have filed paperwork protecting the name in the strongest clue yet that a follow-up to the 2003 Christmas rom-com is in the pipeline. The paperwork, filed by the film company last month, covers: "Entertainment services in the nature of a film series, television series, short form entertainment content, videos and podcasts in the field of news, sports, comedy, drama, music and variety content."It was reported last year that director Richard Curtis had started work on a sequel with Hugh Grant and Liam Neeson keen to reprise their roles as Prime Minister David and grieving father Daniel respectively.Richard explained that a sequel to the movie – which explores love stories among characters who are all connected in some way – would have to make changes to reflect modern society.Speaking in a recent documentary, the 67-year-old filmmaker said: "Thank God,...

Comedy movies are becoming increasingly rare in the movie industry, with fewer being made in recent years. The limited appeal and subjective nature of comedy make it a risky investment for studios. The decline of big-budget comedies and the shift away from pure comedies in Hollywood are notable trends in the industry.
The movie industry has been making fewer and fewer comedy movies in the last decade or so, which means some classic hits are beginning to look like artifacts from a bygone era. Comedy has slowly been absorbed into other genres, but there are very out-and-out comedy movies these days designed solely to make the audience laugh. In days gone by, studios would spend a lot of money on original comedy concepts, but it seems as though these movies are becoming hard to find. Fortunately, the classics will always be there for when comedy fans need a laugh.

Actor Hugh Grant made a surprise appearance at the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham’s Christmas Day Lunch event.
In photos from the event, Grant can be seen serving lunch to elderly residents in the community as the council gathered people who did not have family to celebrate Christmas with, reports People magazine.
Grant could be seen socialising with the event’s attendees and taking photos with residents during his visit, which a Hammersmith and Fulham council spokesperson said came as a Christmas surprise.
“Thanks to everyone who joined us at the annual Big H&f Christmas Day Lunch — including a very special guest, Hugh Grant”, said Councillor Ben Coleman, deputy leader of H&f. “Hugh helped us serve lunch to 500 local older people who otherwise would have celebrated alone. This was the real Love Actually.”
As per People, the event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

December 2003. Twenty years ago. It was a special time for moviegoers. That’s because it was the first holiday season in which “Love Actually” could actually be part of one’s Christmas time festivities. (Richard Curtis‘ ensemble romantic comedy was still playing to healthy crowds in cinemas.)
While the film would not figure into that year’s Academy Awards race, the cast did feature a handful of past Oscar contenders — and a few winners. Sho which “Love Actually” cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?
The most noticeable of those winners was Emma Thompson, 1992’s Best Actress for “Howards End.” She tried (unsuccessfully) for acting awards three more times, including for 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” For penning that script, she accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for superbly adapting the classic novel by Jane Austen.

Love Actually is a beloved holiday film with multiple love stories and a large ensemble cast, and there are other movies like it that explore different phases of relationships. Some movies similar to Love Actually are set during family events like weddings or funerals, while others are romantic comedies with a similar tone. Four Weddings and a Funeral, About Time, and When Harry Met Sally... are a few examples of movies that share similarities with Love Actually and are entertaining in their own right.
Love Actually is considered one of the best holiday-season movies of all time, and with its ensemble star-studded cast and a feel-good story, it might not seem like there are many more movies like Love Actually out there. The movie notably tells more than one love story at a time, exploring different phases of relationships, and it also features a large cast with each character getting plenty of screen time.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).

I couldn't have hated the whole thing more."Hugh explained that his displeasure came from not being certain whether he was supposed to act with his entire body or just through his facial expressions. The 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' star said: "I never received a satisfactory answer. And frankly, what I did with my body was terrible, and it's all been replaced with an animator."Hugh later...

Genies, at least in pop culture, have long been comic foils. Way back in 1940, in “The Thief of Bagdad,” Rex Ingram played Djinn, the movie’s larger-than-life genie — 100 feet tall in his ponytail and red diaper — as a sly, laughing soul man of lighthearted effrontery. The surrealist ’60s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” featured Barbara Eden, in diaphanous harem silks, as a magical servant/housewife, blinking her eyes to teleport her clueless “master” out of trouble. And Robin Williams’ vocal performance as the Genie in “Aladdin” may have come closer than any of his other film performances to channeling Williams the free-associational joke geyser.
So in “Genie,” when Melissa McCarthy pops out of a jewel box and reveals herself to be an ancient granter of wishes named Flora, it’s hardly a surprise that 1) the character is a complete lark, and 2) the whole joke is that Flora, though she hasn...

In the years before Twitter was euthanized, I’d patiently wait for the onset of the holiday season, and the renewal in my feed of the great “Love Actually” Debate. Every year, the best and brightest of the world — middle management apparatchiks, underemployed magazine writers and hall of fame doomscrollers — would chime in, mostly on the nein side, and make their arguments with eloquence. My favorite was ‘You’re a fucking idiot.’
That one I heard a lot.
“Love Actually” turns 20 this month, and I thought it was time for a thorough revaluation. Was it still a glorious double-steak overstuffed Chipotle burrito of humanity, or would I now see it as they did — a foot-long Subway sandwich with way too many olives bought at a South Dakota gas station?
So I watched the movie again this week. I was struck with an unearned epiphany, the kind that you find in a middlebrow holiday romantic comedy.

Italian writer-director Emma Dante’s “Misericordia” has won the top prize at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. Adapted from her own play, her third feature tells the story of a young man (Simone Zambelli) with learning difficulties, cared for by a group of sex workers on an island, protecting him from the cruelty of his abusive father. It’s a raw portrait of a marginalized group of people, mixing natural beauty of the locations with the grime of everyday existence.
Zambelli also took the award for best actor, for his role as the man-child at the center of the drama. The best actress prize was shared by Lubna Azabal, who plays a teacher in Jawad Rhalib’s “Amal,” and Kim Higelin, who stars in the controversial French drama “Consent,” directed by Vanessa Filho, as a teenager having an affair with a manipulative and exploitative 50-year-old writer.

Love Actually features an ensemble cast with multiple storylines, but Hugh Grant stands out as the Prime Minister and romantic lead. Many of the actors, even those in smaller roles, went on to have successful careers in Hollywood. Richard Curtis has written a sequel to 'Notting Hill'.The 66-year-old screenwriter revealed that he has penned a short follow-up to the hit 1999 romcom starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant that would see the pair's characters getting divorced.Speaking on the Have You Seen? Podcast, Richard said: "Recently I wrote – I was going to do it for Comic Relief but it wasn't good enough – I wrote 'Notting Hill 2'."(It) was going to be a 10-minute special set in the divorce lawyer's office with Hugh and Julia splitting up, and then they both realised they loved each other again."Curtis has written hit movies such as 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Love Actually' but opts against making sequels as they are "a tricky road to go down".He said: "I do think the second version of a romantic film is a tricky thing because what...

Wren Pepper is in a pickle in screenwriter/director Jennifer Cram’s debut feature Sick Girl. Wren’s friends are quick to rally around her as she moves through her cancer journey. Unfortunately, Wren doesn’t really have cancer. She told a little white lie that suddenly morphed into a very big problem that just won’t go away.
What propelled Wren to tell that lie may be something most people can relate too, but nobody would actually admit to having cancer if it wasn’t true. That offbeat premise works in Sick Girl mostly because Cram doesn’t want the audience to sympathize with Wren, played by Nina Dobrev. The fun is in watching Wren writhe in guilt and shame. The result produces a middle-ground comedy that’s good for some escapist fun yet never fully reaches the high points you want it to.

“We’re barely ever together as a group,” Wren Cooper moans to her lifelong pals in Sick Girl, the hilarious feature film debut from Jennifer Cram. “That’s the way it goes,” one of Wren’s friends shoots back. Maybe not for long. In the madness of a frenetic gathering, Wren makes a startling announcement: “I have cancer!”
She doesn’t. And Wren herself may not really know why she just blurted it out, but between the thought that she may have peaked in high school and the fact that her now adult friends are seemingly slipping away, she’s desperate to keep the BFFs’ connection alive. Hilarity ensues of course.
The R-rated film stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Dan Bakkedahl (Veep), Brandon Mychal Smith (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and Sherry Cola (Good Trouble). Filmmaker Jennifer Cram shared more about Sick Girl with MovieWeb in this exclusive interview.

Vuelta Group, the rising European film studio which recently launched with the high profile acquisitions of France’s Playtime, Germany’s SquareOne and Scandinavia’s Scanbox, is expanding its footprint in Italy and France.
Spearheaded by media finance veterans (and childhood friends) Jerome Levy and David Atlan-Jackson, Vuelta has bought Indiana Production, a leading Italian company founded by Fabrizio Donvito and Marco Cohen, which had Giorgio Diritti’s “Lubo” playing in competition at Venice and just teased its big-budget Netflix series project “The Leopard” and Sky’s “Unwanted.”
Vuelta has also taken a stake in France’s Pan (formerly called Pan-Europeenne), the well-established production and distribution banner headed by Nathalie Gastaldo, Philippe Godeau and Camille Gentet, whose credits include the hit franchises “Largo Winch” and “Legendaries.”
Vuelta bowed last year with more $100 million provided by a U.S. private equity firm and has now diversified its backing through its European partners.

In solidarity with striking SAG-AFTRA members, Kristin Scott Thomas was a no-show at the Toronto International Film Festival world premiere of her directorial debut, “North Star.” Finola Dwyer, one of its two producers, said during her own introduction that the film is loosely autobiographical for the actress-turned-filmmaker, who also shares screenwriting credit with John Micklethwait.
While it’s known Scott Thomas’s mother had two husbands, both of whom were Navy flyers who died while on duty, it’s a bit of a shame that Scott Thomas wasn’t on hand to clarify exactly to what extent the story is based on her real family and how much artistic license she took.
The story revolves around three sisters living disparate lives reuniting for the wedding of their twice-widowed mother, Diana, played by Scott Thomas herself. Katherine (Scarlett Johansson) has followed in her late father’s footsteps to become a captain in the Royal Navy.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release earlier this year. Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...
