  • Yes, I'm a sap, but there were a couple of places where this movie really tugged at my heartstrings. There were some almost inevitable Lassie-type scenes, but it was fun getting to see Lassie act like a Collie for once.

One thing that I noticed missing from the credits was Robert Weatherwax's name. Without Robert Weatherwax's training, the amazing things that this Lassie does would not be possible. As a dog trainer myself, I recognize the difficulty that accompanies training dogs to do even simple behaviors, so I think that he should be acknowledged.

One thing that made me laugh, though, was the kid's comment about getting another kind of dog for sheep dog: a (German) Shepherd or EVEN A LAB. (Caps mine, from horrified amazement) If a Labrador retriever can herd, the canine star of this movie can give birth to puppies. I'm sure that the problem was that the writer didn't want to say "border COLLIE or Bearded COLLIE or Australian SHEPHERD, but why not "Corgi," or "Sheltie," or "Tervuren?" There's an entire Herding/Pastoral group out there, people! A Lab . . . *rolls eyes*
  • Acceptable film about Lassie in which suffers a car accident and is rescued by Turner family formed by Dad (Jon Tenney) , stepmom (Helen Slater) , little Jennifer (film debut of Michelle Williams and Anna Chlumsky turned down this role) and teenager Matthew (Tom Guiry) . All of them leave the town for the wilds of Virginia . In the country they are helped by a homeless collie named Lassie who becomes part of their lives . As Lassie protects Matthew from a dangerous wolf and saves him from a raging waterfall .

Entertaining and fun dog movie shot in marvelous outdoors with very well trained animals . Exciting life of a Collie named Lassie is here expanded to include the adventures of the humans who surround the dog . It packs a good cast such as Michelle Williams , Tom Guiry , Helen Slater , John Tenney , Richard Fansworth and Frederic Forrest , among others . This is an amusing tale of some children , a family and the most remarkable dog in the world . Set Virginia dealing with the fate of a wonderful Collie dog and the people who own and command them , there are splendidly revealed as Lassie narrates the circle of his life and seen through its own carefree life and unflinching loyalty . Handsome take off of the Eric Knight family novel but sometimes fails to capture qualities that make this book a classic . There were some earlier "Lassies," in literature of the 1800's, as well as in silent films . Eric Knight, a British-born author, wrote a Lassie character in a short story in 1940 , then expanded it to a novel called "Lassie Come Home," which became the first Lassie sound film . This is a new classic for a new generation, a thrilling saga of courage and loyalty . The animals in this film were in no way harmed or mistreated , and all scenes in which they appeared were under strict supervision with utmost concern for their handling . Developed quite energetically , as the story is efficiently told and through its profound and wizened eyes . One thread that connects all the Lassie projects is Lassie herself . Every one of the long string of Lassie productions has featured a collie directly descended from the original canine star, a dog named Pal . The new film was made with a young collie , whose biggest challenges were in scenes caring sheep and swimming across a river on her way home . The impressive scenery , photography and music enhance the story of ¨Lassie¨ and its adventures , sufferings and adversities . The tale is treated in good sense and high sensibility ; environment , animals , landscapes combine to enhance the glories of nature , one of which , after all , is beauty . Glowing and glamorous cinematography by Kenneth MacMillan , though being necessary a right remastering . It was filmed on location in Hinton, Sandstone Falls, New River Gorge National River, West Virginia, and Tazewell County, Virginia . Sensitive as well as emotive musical score by Basil Poledouris . He was an excellent composer and author of masterpieces , he composed : ¨Robocop¨, ¨Conan the Barbarian¨ , and ¨Conan the destroyer¨, ¨Hunt for Red October¨ , ¨Flesh and Blood¨ , ¨Free Willy¨ , ¨Starship troopers¨ , among others . The music all plays with the soul , it is so delicately composed, performed, and chosen for the movie that it is worth seeing just to enjoy the soundtrack . The motion picture was professionally directed by Donald Petrie .

Other films based on this famous novel starred by marvelous collie are the followings : the classic and original Lassie was first performed by a male collie named Pal and played Lassie in all of the early sound films such as ¨Lassie comes home¨ (1943) with Elizabeth Taylor , Roddy McDowall , Donald Crisp , Dame May Witty and Edmund Gwenn ; ¨Sons of Lassie¨ (1945) with Peter Lawford , Donald Crisp , June Lockhart and Nigel Bruce ; ¨Courage of Lassie¨ (1946) with Elizabeth Taylor , Frank Morgan , Tom Drake and Harry Davenport ; ¨Challenge to Lassie¨ with Edmund Gwenn , Donald Crisp , Geraldine Brooks and Reginald Owen . And subsequent follow-up played by Pal's descendants in the TV series and TV appearances and in most Lassie films since ¨Lassie's great adventure¨ (1963) with June Lockhart , Hugh Reilly , Jon Provost , Richard Kiel . And ¨Lassie¨(2005) by Charles Sturridge with John Lynch , Samantha Morton , Peter Dinklage , Peter O'Toole , Kelly Mcdonald , Robert Hardy , Edward Fox and John Standing .

As for the single "In My Life", I purchased all of the Beatles on 45 rpm and large record size singles in the 60s, I have it on both formats. So it is not a goof! There are songs and records issued in different formats for regional, different countries and specialized markets that are never released for most of the USA. The music is good, photography is excellent and rich is color, story extremely possible, locations were outstanding. Production gave a feeling that you were right there is the location and experiencing everything as it happened. My four year-old loved along with the rest of the family. It kept everybody attention. Overall an excellent family movie.
  • This movie was one of my favorites when I was younger. I am now 21 years old and I still love it and watch it whenever it comes on cable. The original concept of Lassie never really appealed to me, I guess because it was slightly before my time. However, I thought this movie brought the spirit of the original Lassie to kids who never got to experience Lassie when it was at it's best.

The main actor Thomas Guiry, who played the troubled Matt Turner, truly carried this film. He was also quite fortunate to be surrounded by other great actors such as Michelle Williams and Charlie Hofheimer.

I really loved this story because it expressed the true values of family and unconditional love. I recommend this film to families, children, and adults alike. I still love this movie and probably always will. I give it a 9 out of 10.
  • I really don't understand some of the negative reviews. What do people expect when they pick up a Lassie video? Yes, this one is admittedly formulaic: crisis looms - Lassie saves the day (repeatedly - it's like four or five of the TV episodes compressed into one movie. Maybe some people feel it's too simplistic, or that there's too much shaggy-haired heroism for one movie. But it's Lassie, for crying out loud! My four-year-old daughter loves it, as do her eight- and eleven-year-old cousins (a boy and a girl, respectively). Older kids would probably find it too schmaltzy, but for the younger ones (and for me, who can remember watching the TV series when I was a kid, and for my wife who's a sucker for schmaltz), it's great.

I'm not sure how many "Lassie" films exist. I've seen the 2005 version once, but I disliked it. This 1994 version, while imperfect, is however a satisfying one. It doesn't have many similarities with the famous TV show. They were made in very different times. The TV series has the feeling of its era, as well as this movie version has a typically 90's feel to it (well, it was made in the 90's!). But still, this motion picture preserves some of the popular TV show's spirit. This movie brings a 50's legend to the 90's and updates it.

The dog that portrays Lassie is, of course, a great four-legged actor, being the Lassie of always: very elegant and beautiful, owner of an exceptional intelligence, heroic and very friendly with everything and everyone. Tom Guiry has a winning performance as Matt.

Matt is, at first, a spoiled and rebel teenager in every way and as such his interests are very specific. But once he starts changing, he changes radically his attitude and learns to appreciate the most beautiful things in life. And all of this after Lassie "stealing" his headphones, forcing him to chase her until a swimming hole (complete with a tree rope).

Now a personal observation and comparison: just like in Disney's 'Old Yeller' the character Travis isn't minimally interested in the dog at first but ends up becoming more attached to it than anyone else, the same happens in this film to Matt on Lassie.

Lassie, as always, senses and responds to dangers as they occur. In this movie there is a scene that particularly fits this description: when Lassie saves Matt from a fierce wolf.

The movie also has beautiful settings and landscapes (typically country scenario) that only make it better.

    Warning: Spoilers
I'm very disappointed from the movie. In the last scene the people didn't try to find Lassie after she saved their son. They just accepted they she is dead, they didn't try to find her and help her, the dog which served them and loved them endlessly. The movie is an example of our unthankful consumer society.

I hate dogs but back in the day this was a good mutty show.

Lassie was a good mutt. He helped people and often saved the day. The mutt looked very clean on screen.

Lassie was children show about a mutt saving people in a little white town.

Verdict: this mutt was pretty good.

Tom Guiry is a nice kid and Lassie XXV (or whatever the current incarnation) is a beautiful dog. There is little else in this predictable plot or its dimensionless characters to interest anyone over the age of 10.
  • As a fan of all things 'Lassie', I looked forward to watching this film in 1994, and at the end of it all, I regret to say that I was disappointed. I guess that I was expecting this film to be old-fashioned. However, this is a modern version of 'Lassie', and the children in this film enjoy the types of activities that children enjoy (at this time in 1994). Lassie is able to convert them, however, to a more old-fashioned and slower paced lifestyle. The film did little to engage me, and I do not think it worked well as a modern story. I cannot see older children wanting to see this film, and it seemed that is was targeted more to older children because of the age of the children in this film. If you want to watch a 'Lassie' film, then I suggest the classic 'Lassie Come Home' or watch the old series of 'Jeff's Collie' or 'Lassie'.

This movie was fun. I like Dogs, and I think this movie lived up to my expectations about what a Lassie movie should be. I watched it with my 8 year old sister who was very entertained by the whole thing. It's true, the plot is quite simple, and the sheep farming wasn't totally accurate, but overall, this movie which focuses on some young kids and of course, Lassie, is good for a night at home in your jammies. My parents were very happy when we picked this off the shelf at the video store. While my sister and I were very happy that Lassie was so beautiful, and that we had fun watching this movie together.
  • Even a Doberman would have to pinch itself to stay awake during this dog. Lassie saves the day, again and again, and the mean hearted neighbor does a complete turn around in attitude and becomes a nice hearted neighbor. There was enough corn in this film to sow the entire state of Indiana border to border. Enough with the movies about brilliant, thoughtful puppies, ok?
  • I think Lassie is a very good movie! Sure it's mostly for kids but I am 16 and I still enjoy it! When I was younger this movie was my favourite and I was in love with Thomas Guiry who played Matt. I think he was fantastic, his acting was phenomenal and he totally stole the limelight, it's worth watching just to see him!
  • The are beautiful scenes of nature in the country side and Lassie is lovely. There were other nice animals in it too such as the young sheep.

It's a typical 90's adaption, predictable and forgettable. It would of been good to have some laughs in the movie and to see the whole family doing things together as a unit.

I personally found the boy frustrating to watch him sometimes and very annoying in the first half.

Why does he keep wearing that bandana on his head?

I think I would of preferred to see more of the other characters in the family instead of him so much.

I'm sure there a better wholesome family picks about animals to watch.
  • (Spoilers) Beautifully photographer, in and around the hills and woods of the state of Virgina, and wonderfully acted. This revival of the timeless story about the sensational sheepdog Lassie that never seems to lose it's charm and affection no matter how many times you see it.

The Turner family father Steve and his new wife Laura and two kids Matt & Jennifer, Jon Tenny Helen Slater Tom Gulry & Brittany Boyd, left the big city of Baltimore to go live and work as sheep farmers in the picturesque countryside of rural Virgina at the house that Steve's late wife Anna left him, come on to a tractor-trailer accident.

Waiting for the state troopers and local fire department to clear the wreckage this sweet and loving collie appears almost out of nowhere. With her master the trailer driver killed and now all alone she's looking for a new home and choose the Turner's as her new "best friends". At first trying to ignorer the cute canine the dog is so persistent, following the Turners on the highway for miles, that they decide to adopt her. It was the best decision that they ever made.

The movie "Lassie" grabs you right from the start and never lets go even after it's emotional and heart-stirring final that if your not in tears by then your just not human. Courageous and detected Lassie wins over everyone she comes in contact with: The Turners, especially young Matt, who at first tried to have nothing to do with the playful pooch. Lassie even wins over the Garlands, the father Sam and his two boys Josh & Jim (Frederic Forrest Clyton Barclay Jones & Charlie Hofhirner), who tried to kid-or dog-nap as well as shoot and kill Lassie. As she tried to keep them from stealing the Turner's flock of some 400 sheep. Young Josh was also angry, at the Turner's, because his girl April, Michelle Williams, left him and his self-indulging macho he-man act for the much more sweet and sensitive, as well as later brave, Matt Turner. The Turner's neighbors were also very bitter at the newcomers for taking over the rich grazing land, by putting a barb-wire fence across it, adjacent to the their farm, grazing land which in fact belonged to the Turners.

Lassie prevailed over all the perils that came before her. From a vicious dog-fight with a wild wolf who she saved Matt from being attacked and possibly killed. To a fast flowing and deadly white-water stream that Lassie saved both Matt as well as Josh who at first got into a fight with Matt over the stolen Turner sheep. That Josh and both his brother Tim and dad Sam Garland tried to commandeer away .

Lassie showed Matt that friendship is not like the CD's records and Walkman radios where you throw, or lock, them away and then buy new ones after you get tired with them; friendship is a life-long commitment. Matt who at first didn't want to move to the country, What No MTV!" saw what he missed in the clean fresh air and healthy environment of the Virgina farmlands. This while he was cooped up in the big city with nothing but rock, hard and soft, music and endless music videos to watch and waste his life, and hearing, away with. But most of all if he didn't move out to the country he never would have got to know and become a life-long friend, like everyone else in the movie, with Lassie.

If you can't stand wholesome family entertainment, you should probably stay away from this one. As to the comment that "This one should be stuck in the back of the doghouse", by another "reviewer", consider it it just someone's toxic two cents that should be ignored. It's not titillating, or gory, or intellectually challenging, but it wasn't meant to be - it's a movie for kids.

It's a story about a boy and a dog, and it's done well. One should expect a bit of sentimentality in a movie called "Lassie", and it's appropriately there. It's uplifting and heartwarming (God forbid!). The scenery was great, as was the soundtrack. Mr. Guiry did a fine job as Matt, and Lassie was, of course, awesome.
  • This latest version of the classic collie, should please people of all ages.It is a great family film, the scenery is beautiful & the story was well written & directed. "Lassie" will always live on throughout each generation, and this current one is proof of that.

OK, first off let me just say this is a spoiler preview, so fair warning. I have seen this movie only once, and once was enough. It was so perfect, so utterly amazing, that I need never see it again, it's all in my minds eye as clear to me as the birth of my first child. I don't have to go to the tape, it's burned in my memory for all time. Some films, how should I put this, some films come straight down from heaven, written directed and produced by GOD! This MIRACLE of modern art that is cinema has the potential(I think) to change the world. Ok, maybe you think I'm some nut who just really likes dogs, well far from it. In fact, dogs terrify me. I have to cross the street even if it's one of those tiny ones old ladies carry in their purses. But this movie allows me to get past that absurd phobia. I like to watch movies with my kids, I like to make sure they don't see violence and sex and stuff like that, at least not till they are older in the double digits. This movie is perfect to watch with your kids. I'm lucky cuase ever since the plant got shut down I've had tons more time to watch tv with them. Now I said that this was a teaser review and it is. Here's what I'll give away: CLAYTON BARCLAY JONES is the next BRAD PITT. I mean it's like I'm looking at his younger brother. CBJ lights up the screen, my oldest daughter is obsessed with him. She even has his POPS cereal comercial on tape. I'm a family man, I got kids and I got a wife who loves me. But that Mr Jones makes me feel things for a man I wasn't sure I was capable of. He's that good. Listen go watch this movie. Savour it. If you feel like watching it two times through I'll understand. Plus there are rumors in the works for a sequel, FINGERS CROSSED!!!! BOTTOM LINE- FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

I will write to you in Greek because I cannot express the same words and feelings in English. Today I saw lassie again after many years since I was a child, it really is a work that creates intense emotions not only for animals but also for nature. Maybe people have to go back to their quality of life a few years back, before the big cities that are actually guardians. I hope that this work will lead many people directly and indirectly to return to nature and create a family there.
  • This film will doubtless entertain young and old. The plot, while very predictable is full of love and endearing moments. The cast is very good at what they were hired to do...deliver a movie about a dog that will save the day and look good while doing it. The film is great and will always leave you with a smile...after all Lassie does save the day. A film that can be enjoyed by the entire family over and over again.
  • I First Saw This Movie 3 0r 4 Years Ago, And I Just Loved It. I,d Never Really Liked The Classic Movies Of Lassie Too Much. They Were Much Too Sad. And Since I Am A Lover Of Animals, I Just Hate Animal Cruelty. However There Are Only 2 Versions Of Lassie That Are Worth Watching In My Opinion. 1. The Magic Of Lassie. 2.Lassie. This Version Of Lassie Really Touched My Heart. It,s A Wonderful Family Movie, That Makes You Laugh And Cry At The Same Time. It Also Shows How Teenagers Adjust To The Real World Through Family, Pets, And Making A Home For Themselves. Even Learning About Young Love. I Highly Recommend This Movie. You,ll Absolutely Love It As I Did. It Teaches Several Valuable Lessons For Young And Old Alike. Thats Why It,s So Very Special

Hello It will never go out of Production and should never go away Lassie is one of the Best Family Movies ever made and this one is no exception Long Live Lassie I just finished watching it and I have to say I was not disappointed as always it was great good story line great acting the country views were fantastic if you get a chance to see it get the pop corn ready and sit back and relax and enjoy yourself once again. Talking about family movies they don't make them like they used to and TV is shot as well, TV used to be a great medium for everyone to enjoy the enjoyment has left all you have now are reality shows no more leaving things to your imagination or just good entertainment Don
  • Why does this film have a 5.9 rating? Because I just watched it and I'll admit I cried especially towards the end. Yes, there were other Lassie-related stuff back at the 1950s even though I was just a kid in the 90s, but I might get a chance to watch those someday. Now, back to the movie.

I wasn't expecting a family friendly film that would be so well-received and yet other people gave it mixed reactions. Maybe it's because of the same kid who befriends a pet cliche that's been done so many times, but at least this film does something different. Yes, the film could've been a little bit longer, but that's my only quibble. Everything else is good.

The cinematography is beautiful and so is the scenery, the editing is very good, the music score from the late Basil Poledouris (who composed Conan The Barbarian, Robocop, Free Willy, and Les Miserables) is hopeful and emotive which makes for a lovely musical narrative, the directing is very nice, and the acting from everyone involved is also good. Tom Guiry (known for playing Scott Smalls in the cult film The Sandlot), does a fine job as Matthew and everyone else including Helen Slater and Michelle Williams (who you may recognize in films like Oz, the Great and Powerful and The Greatest Showman) do a fine job too. And the ending... my god, the ending. It was so sad I now understand why many people put it on their lists of the most saddest movie moments in history.

Seriously, this film deserves a much higher rating than that. So, my recommendation, go check out Lassie and prepare to get some tissues.
