In 1930s New York City, the Shadow battles his nemesis, Shiwan Khan, who is building an atomic bomb.
The opening credits incorrectly list "Advance Magazine Publishers, Inc." as the creators of "The Shadow." The version seen in the movie was originally created by "Street and Smith Publications" to promote its "Detective Story Magazine" in 1930.

The Shadow tells Dr Roy Tam, "Mr Schrevnitz here will instruct you in the way I will contact you if I need your help." The Shadow then gives the instructions himself, but he may have wanted Moe Schrevnitz to clarify his instructions.
