Graham Linehan revealed in a Channel 4 documentary Father Ted: Unintelligent Design (2011), that Dougal was inspired as a cross between wide-eyed bartender Woody from Cheers (1982) and the roadsweeper Trigger from Only Fools and Horses.... Ted comes in and makes fun of the character of Father Ben, saying he has no self-awareness at all. It then cuts to the normal credits.
