Kevin Rooney, a stand-up comedian who won two Emmy awards for his work as a writer on “Dennis Miller Live,” died at his home on July 19 after a battle with diabetes and end-stage renal failure. He was 71 years old.
Rooney’s death was confirmed by his colleague, Jay Mandyam.
“He was a sophisticated raconteur and was a modern-day H.L. Mencken or Schopenhauer,” a statement from Mandyam reads. “As curmudgeonly as he was, he was always the wittiest person in the room and was generous and kind to all.”
Rooney briefly attended Lawrence College in the 1970s before joining the military. In 1977, he began a career in comedy, performing his first stand-up set in Washington, D.C., concluding his act by an act of arguable baptism — pouring a pitcher of beer over his head. Rooney then attended the University of Massachusetts where he studied to become a teacher.

Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine has acquired Sara Rea’s Skr Productions, the company behind Amazon Studio’s “Making the Cut,” and is installing Rea as its head of unscripted television, marking an expansion into the unscripted space.
Rea is most recently known for her work as showrunner on the Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn-hosted “Making the Cut,” which incorporated an e-commerce element that allowed viewers to buy designers’ creations on Amazon Fashion after the premiere of each episode; their series with Amazon Studios followed a major migration from the trio’s nearly decade of work on “Project Runway.” Skr, which was launched in 2014, has also produced “Project Runway Threads,” “Project Runway Junior,” and “The Naked Truth,” among other series.
“Sara has led an incredibly talented team whose values and goals reflect everything we believe in at Hello Sunshine and I’m inspired by all they have accomplished,” said Witherspoon.

Lyle Waggoner, who starred on “The Carol Burnett Show” and in the 1970s “Wonder Woman” series, has died at 84, Variety has confirmed.
In a statement released by Waggoner’s family it was revealed that the “loving husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, and actor passed away peacefully at home on March 17th at the age of 84 with his wife at his side. The cause of death was cancer.”
Waggoner may have become best known for his roles on “The Carol Burnett Show,” where he started as the announcer in 1967 but stayed on with the sketch show through 1974. Some of his most notable sketches include being interrogated by a Nazi and his finger puppet and playing a love-lorn man in “As The Stomach Turns,” a slave master in “The Oldest Man,” Olympian Mark Spitz to Burnett’s Charo, and an alien known as the Jolly Green Thing.
But that show was hardly his only claim to fame.

There have been a number of fairly obscure female superhero team-ups that have appeared sporadically in Marvel comics over the years, including A-Force, Lady Liberators and Fearless Defenders.
Heinberg, who is under an overall deal at ABC Studios, is executive producing the potential series with Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.
Launching a new Marvel series has been a priority for ABC, with the Heinberg project emerging as a strong contender from the get-go, I hear.

Yippee kayak! “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” could be back after all. Just hours after Fox announced that “B99,” “The Last Man on Earth” and “The Mick” wouldn’t be renewed for next season, rumors began about another outlet stepping in and saving the show.
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has already aired five seasons and made it to 112 episodes, which means its back-end is secure: The comedy has more than enough for long-lasting syndication. It’s also not much of a surprise that Fox would shut down the precinct: It doesn’t own the show (it’s produced by Universal TV), and “B99” has not been much of a ratings performer as of late. Also, by a show’s sixth season, costs shoot up as new talent deals are secured.
In a different age, that would be the end of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” But in 2018, there are enough outlets out there looking for shows with built-in...

Talk about performance anxiety.
Both on- and off-screen, this week’s episode of Outlander has a daunting charge: Bring to life the scene fans of Diana Gabaldon’s books have spent years waiting to see — Jamie and Claire’s reunion in Alexander Malcolm’s print shop — and do it perfectly.
The Frasers’ first hours together in decades have to be fraught, but not depressing. They have to be romantic, but not syrupy. And above all, they have to be sexy — Jamie and his Sassenach do, after all, spend a...

CBS’ Madam Secretary, which debuted Sunday, isn’t the Hillary Clinton roman à clef it first seems — and that’s probably a good thing.
Yes, new series follows the appointment and first days in office of a female U.S. Secretary of State (played by Téa Leoni, The Naked Truth). And yes, Leoni’s Elizabeth McCord does, before the hour is up, earn more media attention for her wardrobe choices than for her diplomacy — just like Hil. But that’s where the similarities between the two women end, and what’s left is an intriguing, D.C.-set drama.

In the not great but likable and intelligent Madam Secretary, Téa Leoni’s talent gets a deserving showcase. Throughout the early part of her career, the actress had a knack for playing kooks, and did so brilliantly, most notably on the 1995–98 NBC sitcom The Naked Truth, her most recent starring TV role. This CBS drama about Elizabeth McCord, a former CIA agent and college professor tapped to be secretary of state, gives her a vehicle comparable to Julianna Margulies’s in The Good Wife (only in the sense that she’s asked to act as the calm eye at the center of a storm of more colorful supporting players). Here, Leoni is mostly called on to project empathy, experience, and tactical smarts: to go full Margulies, as it were.A good part of the pilot is about watching Elizabeth learning to function in the West Wing of the White House,...

CBS has scheduled its new drama "Madam Secretary" to air on Sunday nights before "The Good Wife," which means two things: 1)You should expect its start time to often be interfered with by football (though its regular timeslot is 8 p.m. Eastern, it's tentatively set to debut this weekend at 8:30), and 2)CBS hopes that Téa Leoni and friends can do for political drama what Julianna Margulies and company have done for the law genre: find a way to juggle the formulaic procedural qualities of a broadcast network drama with the narrative and moral complexities of what you can find on cable. "Madam Secretary" — which stars Leoni as Elizabeth Faulkner McCord, a former CIA analyst and college professor appointed to be Secretary of State after her predecessor dies in a plane crash — doesn't lack for talent on either side of the camera. The show was created by Barbara Hall, the...

It may seem strange that Matthew Weiner's new movie is a comedy, but let's not forget that before "Mad Men" and even "The Sopranos," the king of AMC worked as a writer on "The Naked Truth" and "Becker." Even Betty Draper would have a visibly emotional response to that revelation. But I think you'd be hard-pressed to find traces of any of those shows in the new trailer for "Are You Here," the Weiner-written family-oriented comedy that premiered at Tiff last year to mixed reviews. Costarring Zach Galifiankis, Owen Wilson, and Amy Poehler, the comedy has apparently gone under some renovation since its festival debut. Wilson plays a womanizing weatherman who comforts his best friend (Galifiankis) after his father dies; Poehler plays Galifianakis' weary sister. "Are You Here," which used to be called "You Are Here," is in theaters and on demand August 22. Here's hoping Poehler gets as much...

Welcome back to TV, Téa Leoni! The Naked Truth star is headlining CBS' new drama Madam Secretary where she plays the newly appointed secretary of state. In the drama, Leoni plays Elizabeth McCord, a former CIA analyst-turned-college professor who gets an offer from the president that she can't refuse. "There was something—I adored her. I adored her by page two, there's no sarcasm to her. Sarcasm is too slow," Leoni told E! News' Kristin Dos Santos about her character. "I want to wake up and be her every day." When I first saw the trailer for CBS' new fall show "Madam Secretary," my first thought was, hey, Tea Leoni! I love Tea Leoni! My second thought was, man, have not been seeing much of her in recent years. Sure, she was just in "Tower Heist" in 2011, but no one saw that, and it's been a whole lotta years since "Flirting with Disaster." There have been many projects in between, but not enough of them have been ideal showcases for Leoni's talent, plus movies like "Jurassic Park III" and "Deep Impact" weren't really about the actors, and plenty of other stars dominated hits like "A League of Their Own." Here are five reasons why I'm really hoping this is the hit Leoni has long deserved. 1) She's smart by any standard Yes, she dropped out of Sarah Lawrence, but let's remember that she got into Sarah Lawrence. Watching her on screen in any role,...

This is a big casting coup right off the bat this pilot casting season. CBS has set Tea Leoni as the lead in drama pilot Madam Secretary, from Joan Of Arcadia creator Barbara Hall and Oscar winner Morgan Freeman. The drama, written by Hall, explores the personal and professional life of a maverick female Secretary of State (Leoni) as she drives international diplomacy, wrangles office politics and balances a complex family life. CBS TV Studios is producing with Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment, with the company’s Freeman, Lori McCreary and Tracy Mercer executive producing alongside Hall. Leoni has stayed away from network television since 1998 when her NBC sitcom The Naked Truth ended its run. She has been constantly approached for pilots ever since, but her only TV gig in the past 15 years was the 2011 HBO pilot Spring/Fall. By his own admission, Mark Roberts has had a lucky career. He began as a stand-up in Chicago, and was soon spotted by a casting director who helped him land work in commercials and "every movie that filmed in Chicago." Sitcom work soon followed, including a series regular gig on the Tea Leoni series "The Naked Truth," before Roberts chose to pursue writing, his true passion. Roberts and Lorre would then go on to create "Mike and Molly," which won an Emmy last year for star Melissa McCarthy. For those of us who grew up during the "Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" era of Disney films, the re-releasing of these childhood classics hits on some very nostalgic nerves. At least for this writer, anyway. I have very specific childhood memories tied to all of those animated classics and am looking forward to seeing "Beauty and the Beast 3D" during its limited release (which began today).
Anyway, in thinking about the magic involved in this film - the first animated movie ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar- I can't help but wonder about the talented voice actors who brought the characters to life. Where are they now? Click through to see what the actors who brought Belle, Beast and Mrs. Potts to life are up to now.
