Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment When it came to Adam Sandler’s comedy films in the ’90s, it could certainly be said that Sandler brought a childlike enthusiasm to his roles. By placing Sandler in a story where he had to go back to grammar school, Billy Madison provided the perfect context for Sandler’s talents. It’s hard to believe, then, that the film celebrates its 30th anniversary, so a lot of Sandler’s on-screen classmates are pushing 40! But back when they were filming the movie, Sandler and the kids developed a special kind of relationship. As Sandler told us before the film’s premiere, the set felt like a summer camp, and he would do anything he could to entertain the kids between scenes. Don’t tell that nasty penguin, but Billy Madison is turning 30 today. It’s the movie that taught America that peeing your pants is cool, that shampoo and conditioner have been locked in a battle for the ages and that Adam Sandler was going to be one of the funniest movie stars of all time.
While Billy Madison was written by Sandler and his longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy, it was directed by Tamra Davis, who had previously directed Chris Rock’s CB4 and would go on to direct Half Baked.
Joining me for a Zoom call recently to mark the movie’s 30th anniversary, Davis was happy to recall her time working on Billy Madison, including sharing funny stories about Chris Farley stripping, why Sandler was convinced pelting kids with a dodgeball was comedy gold and how she still doesn’t understand what that penguin was doing there.

Say goodbye to those New Year greetings and memes, because February is almost here. Time to really sink our teeth into 2025 and how it’ll look, and of course that means beefing up your watchlist. As always the libraries of Hulu and Disney+ (and multiple available bundles) are here to help, with new shows and movies (both family friendly and… a little unfriendly) available to stream.
Along with ongoing episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Disney+ will debut all of “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” Season 2 and plenty of other great titles for young viewers. “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” special will recapture the magic of a live performance, and “Harlem Ice” follows a girls’ figure skating team through their competitive season.
Hulu will feature ongoing episodes of the new drama “Paradise,” and if you want more White House action there’s Viacom’s “The Oval,...

This probably sounds unthinkable in 2024, but 25 years ago, the notion of Adam Sandler appearing in a film with even the slightest of awards hopes was considered deranged. The "Saturday Night Live" veteran was one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood, but the movies that brought him to the mountaintop were almost all critically maligned goofs. Aside from the sweet-natured rom-com "The Wedding Singer," Sandler was viewed as a juvenile vulgarian who unrepentantly aimed low. Even though he could procure the services of respected actors like Drew Barrymore, Steve Buscemi, and John Turturro, Sandler's brand of inspired stupidity could not be accepted as worthy of their generation's comedy imbecile Jerry Lewis.
So when word got out in 2001 that Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the most exciting young auteurs working at the turn of the millennium based on the strength of "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia," announced that he'd cast Adam Sandler...

Adam Sandler has quite a few films in his filmography that’s been rated negatively by sites like Rotten Tomatoes. However, Sandler himself might not share the same opinion regarding even some of his most underperforming features.
Adam Sandler didn’t feel like he had any ‘downs’ when it came to movies Adam Sandler | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Sandler wasn’t the type to pay too much attention to critics’ opinions. He learned to stop caring about reviews the hard way after one of his earlier films, Billy Madison, was torn apart with criticism. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sandler discussed just how shocking it was for him to get a negative review.
“When I was 17 and I got into this, I didn’t think about critics…I didn’t even realize that stuff was coming,” Sandler said. “I just thought you made movies, people go see it. When Billy Madison came out,...

On the day that “Happy Gilmore 2” wrapped principal photography, Adam Sandler called in to “The Dan Patrick Show” to discuss the comedy sequel, dishing on some cameos for the film and teasing a potential release date for the Netflix production.
“They’re going to yell at me no matter what, because they asked me to not do any press,” Sandler starts at the beginning of the interview. “But what do you want to say and I’ll tell you if it’s good or bad to talk about.”
“Can I talk about Eminem having a cameo?” asked Patrick. The sports media personality also appears as a small role in the film.
“I’ve known Eminem for a long time and he’s a great guy,” Sandler said, confirming the rapper is involved in the film. Eminem was spotted on the New Jersey set back in November. “He came in and was funny as hell.

Adam Sandler isn’t an actor that the audience associates with the Oscars, and surprisingly, his only Oscar-nominated movie to date is a comedy with 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. Adam Sandler is one of the most popular comedy actors of his generation, as well as one of the most profitable ones, even if many of his movies aren’t critical hits. Sandler’s acting career began on television when he played Smitty in The Cosby Show in 1987, while his film debut arrived in 1989 in the comedy Going Overboard. The following year, Sandler joined the cast of Saturday Night Live.
Sandler’s break arrived in 1995 with the comedy Billy Madison, and since then, he has appeared in a variety of comedies, some more successful than others. There's nothing better than curling up in front of the boob tube on a Friday night with a bucket full of popcorn to watch a classic piece of cinema. Luckily, in this day and age, movies are readily accessible on various streaming platforms. Peacock, in particular, carries a surprising amount of top-notch films to ensure that popcorn doesn't go to waste.
While perusing their streaming library, there were roughly 60 movies on Peacock that I'd happily watch any day, ranging from blockbuster franchises like "Harry Potter" to quirky comedies like "Billy Madison" -- not to mention the endless supply of Hallmark and original movies. Of course, we couldn't include all our favorites, but we've narrowed it down to a Top 30, ranked from great to, well, greater. I wholeheartedly recommend every single movie on this list.

In an age where raunchy, ridiculous comedies are getting harder and harder to come by, stand-up comic and podcaster Stavros Halkias is willing to do whatever he has to become the next Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, or Chris Farley. For years, his crowd work was a staple of TikTok, endearing audiences with his crude, blunt sense of observational humor that extends to his involvement in the former podcast “Cum Town,” as well as his current show, “Stavvy’s World.” Now trying to both leverage and expand on this fan base he’s spent years cultivating, Halkias has placed another bet on himself by co-writing and starring in the indie screwball comedy “Let’s Start a Cult.”
The film was conceived alongside co-star Wes Haney and director Ben Kitnick, who brought the idea to Halkias, then later developed the script as well as a short version with him prior to the making of the feature.

Did you forget about Adam Sandler's 2015 movie "Pixels?" If you did, that makes sense; it was a critical flop that ended up scoring a Razzie nomination (though it at least performed solidly at the box office). Now, according to FlixPatrol, "Pixels" is gaining traction on Netflix, having claimed the number three spot in the streamer's daily top 10 most-streamed movies as of October 14, 2024.
Why "Pixels" is performing well on Netflix's is, frankly, anybody's guess; perhaps affection for the Sandman runs deeper than I realize. In any case, the movie is performing solidly on the streamer, which is also probably news to Sandler's co-stars Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan, and ... Emmy winners and HBO stalwarts Peter Dinklage and Brian Cox. The movie also has a pretty solid creative team, with Chris Columbus — of "Home Alone" and the first two "Harry Potter" movies — directing and Tim Herlihy co-writing with Timothy Dowling.

Billy Madison is a classic Adam Sandler comedy and despite some parts of it not aging the best, the film still stands up against most modern comedies. Generally ranked among the highest-rated Adam Sandler movies, Billy Madison is possibly one of the first of his films I remember watching. The viewing probably took place in a friend's basement, with my parents unaware because, as some more recent fans of Sandler may not know, his comedies used to be much more raunchy and adult than his recent crop of family-targeted movies would suggest.
The movie stars Sandler as the titular Billy Madison, a spoiled man-child who, rather than preparing to take over his father's company, spends his days drinking and carousing with his friends. However, it's revealed Billy never finished grade school or high school and is sent back to the classroom to get his diplomas. It's a wacky premise, and thanks to Sandler's hilarious commitment,...

A few days ago, it was announced that Happy Gilmore would be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release from the Kino Lorber video label. The ultra-high-definition transfer of the Adam Sandler comedy is due to hit retailers sometime early next year, presumably to coincide with the release of the Netflix sequel. It has now been announced, per Blu-ray.com, that Sandler’s previous breakout film, Billy Madison, will also be getting a 4K release from Kino Lorber that is scheduled to become available to consumers also early next year.

Like many popular comedic actors of the day, Adam Sandler got his start on “Saturday Night Live” first as a writer and then as a cast member. He was spotted by weekend update anchor Dennis Miller doing stand-up comedy and Miller recommended him for the show. Sandler was a big success on the show, particularly doing song parodies during the Weekend Update segments. Sandler left the show in 1995 after only five years on the program. Years later when Conan O’Brien was having his own problems with NBC, Sandler admitted to O’Brien that he was actually fired from “SNL” and didn’t leave voluntarily as had been assumed.
Sandler started off doing comedy films after that but has evolved into doing dramatic work at times. While he has a pretty strong track record as a box office draw, he has also often been the target of poor reviews from critics...

Adam Sandler's "Big Daddy" is now streaming on Netflix, a heartwarming comedy where he plays an unlikely father. Despite negative Rotten Tomatoes score, the film was a box office hit and paved the way for Sandler's later down-to-earth characters. Big Daddy's 39% critic score doesn't reflect audience sentiment, as it's a feel-good movie with heart and humor, showcasing Sandler's versatile acting talents.
One of the best Adam Sandler comedies ever made is now on Netflix despite its negative Rotten Tomatoes score. Sandler, who has gotten more into dramatic roles in recent years with his leading performances in films such as Uncut Gems (2019), Hustle (2022), and Spaceman (2024), is still celebrated for his timeless comedy classics such as Happy Gilmore (1996), The Waterboy (1998), and Billy Madison (1995). Sandler has several upcoming movies in both the dramatic and comedy genre including an untitled Noah Baumbach film, an untitled Safdie Brothers project, and a Happy Gilmore sequel.

Here's a lesson for the kids out there: speak your dreams into existence and maybe, just maybe, they'll actually come true. Tragically, those who follow the comedy scene closely know that it's littered with high-profile examples of beloved talent who ended up burning out and leaving us far too soon. This one, however, might end up circling back to the best of silver linings.
Today's news has to do with Chris Farley, the late, great "Saturday Night Live" actor and comedian who passed away at the age of 33 back in 1997. When Adam Sandler made his television debut as Stud Boy and the Trivia Delinquent on MTV's influential game show "Remote Control," he did not exude an all-ages appeal. He was an unassuming goofball: funny, yes, but in a dorky way that augured a career as, at best, a supporting comedic performer. If he played his cards right, he could have Gilbert Gottfried's movie and television career.
Like Gottfried, Sandler became a Not Ready for Prime Time Player on "Saturday Night Live." Unlike Gottfried, he didn't get canned after his first season. By the early 1990s, he was one of the show's breakout stars. He built on his success via a pair of platinum comedy albums ("They're All Gonna Laugh at You" and "What the Hell Happened to Me?"), and proved he could carry a movie with 1995's "Billy Madison." The critics loathed him, but teens and twentysomethings dug his unrepentantly juvenile humor.

Update: It looks like Christopher McDonald was right about Adam Sandler working on the script for Happy Gilmore. Sandler’s fave co-star and longtime pal Drew Barrymore confirmed, in a clip from today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, that the sequel is indeed happening. “I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,” says Barrymore, adding later, “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.”
Barrymore famously starred with Sandler in three movies, The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Blended. The two have remained close over the years, with Sandman frequently turning up on her show. Despite behind-the-scenes drama, Black Sheep is a nostalgic comedy gem in Chris Farley's career, pitting SNL talent in a 90s time capsule. David Spade and Farley's second and last film together, Black Sheep, may have faced challenges, but their chemistry shines in this rollicking flick. Spade's rocky relationship with the director led to creative clashes, but the duo's dedication to making the film work paid off in Farley's legacy.
The David Spade and Chris Farley 1996 comedy Black Sheep had some behind-the-scenes drama that nearly stopped production. Black Sheep is one of the funniest movies of Chris Farley's tragically short career, and it's a nostalgic and seminal work in David Spade's thankfully long one. In the film, a political aide named Steve Dodds (Spade) is assigned to look after Mike Donnelly (Farley), the black sheep brother of a political candidate. Adam Sandler is one of the most prolific comedy actors working in Hollywood right now. The actor has his particular brand of comedy, with his gruff voice, loud humor, and the inclusion of Kevin James in many of his films. Though the actor has proved his acting chops in more dramatic roles such as Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, his comedic roles are still classics.
One of his breakthrough comedies was the sports comedy Happy Gilmore. The film follows the story of an ice hockey player who competes in a local golf tournament. The film was a huge commercial hit, putting Sandler on the map as a bonafide comedy star. His co-star Christopher McDonald mentioned that Sandler had shown him a copy of a sequel for the film.

“Happy Gilmore 2” is apparently being developed by Adam Sandler, and a script even exists. Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald revealed the news during a radio interview on “Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan.” McDonald said he had a recent run-in with Sandler, who unexpectedly pulled out the first draft for a sequel to their 1996 sports comedy classic.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
Variety has reached out to Sandler’s representative for comment.
Sandler starred in and co-wrote “Happy Gilmore,” which was directed by Dennis Dugan.

Farley's cameo in Billy Madison showcased his comedic genius and ability to elevate any scene with his unforgettable physical comedy. The director was terrified by Farley's intense method acting, including pounding six shots of espresso and holding his breath until turning red. Despite concerns, Farley's legacy as a fearless comedic actor continues to inspire new generations and leave a lasting mark on entertainment.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is a fantastic return to classic "Star Trek" that uses its science fiction setting to create incredible allegories about our own world. "Billy Madison" is a very silly Adam Sandler movie from the 1990s about a man-child who has to go from kindergarten through high school in six months in order to inherit his father's business and fortune. They are as different from one another as can be, yet at least one "Strange New Worlds" episode is rather deeply connected to the sophomoric yet lovable absurdity of "Billy Madison." While they don't share anything in-universe and Adam Sandler has sadly never made a "Star Trek" appearance, eagle-eyed viewers might have recognized some similar sights in the background of both the movie and the season 1 "Strange New Worlds" episode, "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach."

The week of Thanksgiving is always a major one for moviegoers, and these days, that holds true for streaming too. Netflix typically offers up a new movie that becomes an instant hit among subscribers, and this year it was the animated Adam Sandler film "Leo." If you haven't seen the ads for "Leo," it's a musical coming-of-age comedy about an old lizard (Sandler) who becomes a mentor to fifth graders after they discover the class pet can talk. It's more likely that you have already seen this movie, though, as Netflix reports that 34.6 million people tuned in to watch it during the week of November 20th to 27, 2023.
Streamers' self-reported data is notoriously less-than-transparent, but an animated kids' movie doing huge numbers during a long weekend is a no-brainer. "Leo" also actually looks good; the smooth animation is closer to Dreamworks or Pixar style than typical Netflix fare, and Sandler reigns...

‘Leo’ Review: Adam Sandler Plays a Literal Teacher’s Pet in Winning Toon From the ‘TV Funhouse’ Team

“Perhaps if people talked less, animals would talk more,” observes one of the human characters in “Charlotte’s Web,” a kiddie classic that serves as both the butt of several jokes and an inspiration for Adam Sandler’s animated “Leo,” an endearing Netflix original that strikes just the right balance between heart and fart jokes.
Basing the way Leo sounds on his squeaky-scratchy, slightly guttural impression of the late Hollywood agent Bernie Brillstein, Sandler voices a crusty old iguana who’s spent three-quarters of a century — practically his entire life — trapped in an elementary school classroom. Leo’s wisdom is largely limited to what’s taught in fifth grade, though he’s observed enough kids over his 74 years that the lizard reckons he’s qualified to advise this crop. Truth be told, he’s cheaper and more consistently helpful than your typical child psychologist.

Tennis champ Pete Sampras has revealed that his wife Bridgette Wilson has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
“As most have come to know, I am a pretty quiet and private person,” read a statement Sampras released through the Atp. “However, this past year has been an exceptionally challenging time for my family and I have decided to share what’s been going on. Last December, my wife, Bridgette, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since then, she has had major surgery, pushed through chemotherapy and continues with targeted maintenance therapy.”
Sampras went on to say that “it is hard to watch someone you love go through a challenge like this.” However, the former tennis star says that “Seeing our boys step up and be such strong supporters of Bridgette, myself and each other has been amazing.

On October 23rd and 25th audiences will have the opportunity to celebrate the release of Britney Spears‘ memoir, “The Woman in Me,” with a global fan screening of Spears’ acting debut, in the 2002 film “Crossroads.” As director Tamra Davis told TheWrap, fans have Spears herself to thank for the movie returning to theaters.
“I’ve been working on trying to get distribution for the film for years. I’ve been calling my lawyers, everybody, but it was so tangled up,” Davis said. “It was Britney [who] called to make it happen. She was the one [who] personally called and she got it over to Sony and got it to be rereleased.”
“I meant nothing but one phone call from her and she made it happen,” Davis said.
