On a U.S. nuclear missile sub, a young First Officer stages a mutiny, to prevent his trigger happy Captain from launching his missiles, before confirming his orders to do so.
Jason Robards, who plays the Admiral in the inquiry scene, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and received the Navy Cross (though he is not listed in official rolls of Navy Cross recipients, despite the claims some - not he - have made).
What'd you think, son? That I was just some crazy old coot, putting everyone in harm's way as I yelled "YEE-HA!"?
On the cover of the unrated extended version the submarine appears to be the USS Silversides (SS-236), a WWII-era sub launched in 1941, and not the USS Alabama (SSBN-731).
The English language version includes a scene where Lt. Cmdr. Hunter (Denzel Washington) breaks up a fight between two sailors. One of the two men tells Hunter that they were arguing over which version of the character Silver Surfer was best, the one drawn by Jack Kirby or the one by Moebius. In the Italian version the comic book character over which the two men are fighting have been changed to Betty Boop and Felix the Cat.
