This started off as a 30 minute short which Hal Hartley shot in New York as he was preparing to make Amateur (1994). He was subsequently handed the money to expand his half hour featurette.

Bill: A future, huh?
Bill: How can I answer that?
Emily: Yes or no.
Bill: I can't see the future.
Emily: You don't *need* to see it if you know it's there.
