When their second child is on its way things get even worse, so that Katie decides to leave the house; but when she packs her suitcase the conflict climaxes to him getting shot. A trial is about to find out what happened...—Volker Boehm
- Katie and Jimmy seem to be a perfect young couple, but after their first child was born, he started being abusive to her and neglecting her. Then when she gets pregnant again, things get completely out of control. When Katie finally decides to leave, Jimmy beats her and waves a rifle in her face, basically telling her "it's you or me". Katie winds up killing him and is arrested and put on trial. However, during all that time, Katie was hiding the abuse from her family, friends, and authorities, one, in hopes that her still-devoted love to Jimmy would eventually persuade him to stop abusing her, and two, to keep her police officer father (with his own marital issues) from meddling in her life. Unfortunately, this lack of past evidence throws quite a few speed-bumps in the road towards an acquittal for self-defense reasons.—lentzj1@tds.net
- This TV-dramatization tells the story of marital abuse, but with a slight twist in the formula: the abuser and abused are young, upper-middle-class newlyweds. Kellie Martin is fresh-faced wife and young-mother Katie Liner, who goes against her parents' better judgment and marries the good-looking but shady Jimmy Pettit (Ivan Sergei). As soon as they have their first child, he starts beating her everyday, but repeatedly accepts his apologies. When she gets pregnant again, things are getting worse. So, after doing everything in her power to hide the truth from her police-officer father (Kevin Dobson), she finally comes clean to her family and tries to leave, facing the ultimate confrontation with Jimmy. Then she kills him in self defense and her father arrests her and she goes on trial and is found not guilty. And here's the moral for this movie: How many of you have been hit? Who among you beats their wives? Well, this is against the law; it's wrong...and everyone including her mother (Linda Kelsey), her older sister (Kristin Dattilo-Hayward) and her neighbor (Ted Hayden) watched it happen to Katie and they did nothing. You have a responsibility to the people you care about. If you see them hurting or see them in trouble, you step in and do something about it. Tell someone so that this does not happen again. Silence isn't always golden. Silence has claimed the lives of many. While one may understandably feel as though they have no right to intervene, abuse and sexual assault cases can prove to have tragic consequences. Help the ones you love. Tell someone and urge them to do the same. *UNLOCK THE SILENCE*
