Peter Weller has been in some of the most acclaimed films of the 80s and 90s. He starred in Buckaroo Banzai, Mighty Aphrodite, The New Age, and Naked Lunch. In the 2000s and 2010s, he played Christopher Henderson and Stan Liddy in the fifth seasons of 24 and Dexter respectively. In film, he most popularly appeared as Alexander Marcus in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

People over the years have mostly associated Weller with his iconic role of Alex Murphy in 1987’s RoboCop. The thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi flick became a groundbreaking yet misunderstood film at the time, similar to Blade Runner. However, director Paul Verhoeven initially felt the script was too alien to him and far removed from his previous works.

Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), Parker Young (Imposters), Nestor Carbonell (The Dark Knight Rises), and Academy Award® winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) star in this twisted tale of deception and desire based on the bestselling thriller by Adele Parks. Identical twins Anna and Zoe find their bond tested over Anna's new love, Nick. While the trusting Anna is head over heels, her skeptical sister Zoe senses a web of deceit. But as Zoe digs for the truth, they're all pulled into a dangerous game where honesty could prove fatal. I'm doing this one for Josh. Normally, I'd give erotic thrillers a miss, because, erotic thrillers. However, after watching the trailer for Image of You I'm almost convinced that this is something that Josh would be...

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.
Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

Woody Allen is a four-time Academy Award winner who has proved incredibly prolific in his decades-long career, writing, directing, and oftentimes starring in nearly a film a year for over 50 years. But how many of those are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After years as a joke writer and standup comic, Allen transitioned into filmmaking penning such screenplays as “What’s New Pussycat?” (1965) and starring in such titles as “Casino Royale” (1967). His first credit as a director was the comedically overdubbed Japanese spy thriller “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” (1966).
The Woody Allen as we know him emerged in 1969 with the farcical mockumentary “Take the Money and Run” (1969), made when he was 34 years old. The success of that film led to a string of critically acclaimed absurdist comedies, including “Bananas” (1971) and “Sleeper” (1973).

It’s been six months beloved judge Len Goodman passed, but Dancing with the Stars isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet.
Though Tuesday’s theme was Most Memorable Year, the Week 5 episode was really meant to honor Goodman, who died from prostate cancer in April at the age of 78. After airing a sentimental package featuring past pros talking about what an honor it was to be both complimented and criticized by Goodman, the episode then featured a dance tribute to “Moon River” that was waltzed to perfection by current pros and past faves Kym Johnson, Anna Trebunskaya, Karina Smirnoff, Edyta Sliwinska, Tony Dovolani, Louis van Amstel, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Mark Ballas.
It ended with the troupe gesturing to an empty middle chair on the judges’ dais. Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli wept.

Actor Mira Sorvino has said she is “incredibly hurt and shocked” after her father, the late actor Paul Sorvino, was omitted from the Oscars’ in memoriam segment on Sunday night.

Every year it’s a depressing ritual: Who is the Academy going to fail to recognize in their annual In Memoriam segment? Once again, during the live ceremony, more stars who passed away in the last year were left out.
Anne Heche, Paul Sorvino, Tom Sizemore, Leslie Jordan, and “Triangle of Sadness” star Charlbi Dean were not included in the tribute. “Walking and Talking” star Heche died in August 2022 after a car crash; she was in a coma before being taken off of life support.
Sizemore similarly died in March 2023 after being taken off of life support following a ruptured brain aneurysm. Jordan died after suffering a medical emergency behind the wheel and crashed his car in October 2022.

Four years after “Black Panther” became the first Oscar-winning film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” cast member Angela Bassett has made history as the first person to achieve academy recognition for an MCU performance. Included among the numerous actors with whom she reunites in the 2022 sequel is Lupita Nyong’o, who first played her role of Nakia four years after earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “12 Years a Slave.” If Bassett ends up prevailing in the same category this year, Nyong’o will be the 16th woman to have acted in a film that won the same Oscar she previously received.
Until this year, “12 Years a Slave” was the only acting Oscar-nominated film Nyong’o had appeared in. Two of her cast mates in the 2014 Best Picture winner – Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender – respectively competed for the male lead and supporting prizes but eventually...

As society evolves, moments in films that were once beloved can start to sour in history’s proverbial rear-view mirror. When Sandy (Olivia Newton John) revamps her entire look and personality to please her boyfriend Danny (John Travolta) at the end of Grease (1978), for example. Or when the cartoon crows in Disney’s animated classic Dumbo are literally called “The Jim Crows”.
Even plenty of Academy Award-winning movies have not aged particularly well. As the 94th Academy Awards approach this Sunday (27 March), here are 10 Oscar-winning films that are problematic in 2021.
Green Book (2018)
When Green Book, which won Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards, arrived in cinemas a few years back, it quickly became a divisive topic of conversation. The picture, starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, enjoyed early success with audiences and sailed through awards season, but critics lambasted it as being shortsighted in its depiction of race relations.

Mira Sorvino revealed that her career feels “tainted” since winning an Oscar and Golden Globe for Woody Allen’s 1995 film “Mighty Aphrodite.”
Sorvino explained during Marc Maron’s “Wtf” podcast that she “should have denounced” the director over the sexual abuse allegations that Allen molested his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.
“I didn’t look deep enough to actually educate myself to really make an educated opinion at the time. It’s not an excuse,” Sorvino said, explaining that she grew up “idolizing” Allen as an artist.
“It’s so hard to talk about it now because I now have a very different opinion of Woody than I did now. I blame myself for not investigating further into what happened with Dylan,” Sorvino said. “There was the whole custody battle and it was in the press. Maria Bakalova scored her first-ever Oscar nomination for her audacious performance as Tutar in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Bakalova is arguably the most acclaimed breakout star of 2020, which is all the more impressive because this role is not only her debut in an American studio film, but it is also her first comedic foray. The young Bulgarian actress had to date only worked in theater and on screen in primarily dramatic roles in Europe.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards have one of the best track records with the four Oscar acting categories: SAG has only mismatched five times in Best Actor, seven times in Best Actress, nine times in Best Supporting Actor and eight times in Best Supporting Actress. That’s pretty good news for SAG champs Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom“), Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”). But while SAG matches up with Oscar a lot in the categories individually, it has comparatively less success batting 1000 in all four categories in one year.
In its 26-year history, SAG has directly matched 4/4 with Oscar only eight times, most recently last year with sweepers Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”). That was the second season with a complete 20/20 acting sweep of the Golden Globe,...

Woody Allen lashed out at all the actors who have publicly condemned him in recent years and expressed regret about having worked on his films — or refuse to act for him again.
“I think they’re well-meaning but they’re foolish,” the filmmaker said in a new CBS News interview released on Paramount+ Sunday. “All they’re doing is they’re persecuting a perfectly innocent person and they’re enabling this lie.”
In the interview, which was recorded last July after the publication of Allen’s memoir “Apropos of Nothing,” Allen repeated his previous denials that he had sexually molested his then-7-year-old daughter Dylan Farrow in 1992. The accusations, which were investigated at the time, resurfaced in mid-2010s and led many to take a public stand against the filmmaker — particularly after the emergence of the #MeToo movement in 2017.

It was the year of fresh faces, surprise wins, tear-inducing moments, battling pigs and Sharon Stone making Gap red-carpet worthy, all of which added up to one of the most well-received Oscar ceremonies of the past 30 years. Out of 24 categories, an outstanding 15 winners were first-time nominees. Whoopi Goldberg helmed the 68th Annual Academy Awards ceremony on March 25, 1996, and earned rave reviews after a lackluster previous year.
The year prior, David Letterman‘s hosting was met with largely negative reviews, so the Academy brought in legendary music producer Quincy Jones to liven things up, and it was he who picked Goldberg. This was the comedienne’s second time to host, having done so two years prior (she would host again in 1999 and 2002), and she managed to honor the nominated films, while also getting laughs with subtle digs – beginning with her opening remark, “So, did you miss me?” The “mighty afro-deity” also...

Traditionally, Oscar voters honor smaller roles in the Best Supporting Actress category, especially compared to the corresponding male one. The average supporting female performance clocks in at just 24 minutes and 37 seconds, with the majority of them falling under 22 minutes. Still, a decent amount of long ones have been consistently recognized, including six that reach the one hour screen time mark. Here is a look at the 10 longest (and here are the 10 longest winners):
10. Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”)
57 minutes, 45 seconds (34.46% of the film)
2016’s group of Best Supporting Actress nominees boast the highest screen time average (51 minutes and 46 seconds) in the history of both supporting categories. Leigh, Rooney Mara (“Carol”), and winner Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) concurrently earned spots on this list and all attracted controversy by appearing to have been placed in the wrong category. As crass outlaw Daisy Domergue, Leigh plays the only major female character in “The Hateful Eight,...

Mira Sorvino in MIghty Aphrodite (1995)
After interviewing Mira Sorvino about her new projects, the Emmy hopeful Hollywood and two recent indies, our conversation drifted back over her whole career.
For fun, we asked her to program her own mini three or four film retrospective by naming her favourite projects. She acknowledged immediately that Mighty Aphrodite (1995) would be selected for any retrospective since it was her Oscar-winning role, but she wanted to shine the light on lesser-known titles. "I fall in love with every project," she noted, as that three or four film group kept growing and becam eight titles in our conversation. She might have changed the list on another day but here were the titles she hoped people would rediscover or see for the first time that she's very fond of. How many how these have you seen?
Barcelona (1994)

In our exclusive video interview (watch above), the Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner for 1995’s “Mighty Aphrodite,” discusses her love for the character and her first experience working with Murphy.
