Marlon Brando – the man whom Time magazine crowned the greatest actor of the 20th century back in 1998 – would be celebrating his 100th birthday today had he not died 20 years ago. Born on April 3, 1924, Brando was a fascinating if divisive character, a perpetually enigmatic figure whose impact not only on the acting profession but on American popular culture itself can’t be overstated. He starred in numerous iconic roles, from Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” to Terry Malloy in “On the Waterfront” to Julius Caesar in “Julius Caesar” to Vito Corleone in “The Godfather.”
While he wound up nominated for eight Academy Awards and six Golden Globes and won two of each, it was the one honor Brando rejected, of course, that came to define his awards legacy: his Best Actor win for “The Godfather” in 1973 in which he sent actress and purported Native American representative Sacheen Littlefeather (a.

While the versatile filmmaker Martin Scorsese has helmed various genres, the gangster drama is the one that put him on the map, starting with the Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro starrer Mean Streets. The film’s success led to him being the master of the genre with films like Casino and The Irishman.
However, before he became the master of the genre, he was reportedly apprehensive about following through on one of his best films, Goodfellas. Scorsese was reportedly hesitant to tackle the genre again after Mean Streets and reportedly went to The Godfather star Marlon Brando, who surprisingly advised against pursuing it.
Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas Was His Return To Form Martin Scorsese in Dreams
Martin Scorsese has been making films since the ‘60s and debuted with Who’s That Knocking On My Door and struggled for a bit before finding his breakthrough with the gangster film Mean Streets.

Italy’s Torino Film Festival will celebrate the centennial of Marlon Brando’s birth with a 24-title retrospective of films featuring the groundbreaking two-time Oscar winner, known for his naturalistic acting style and rebellious streak.
The Brando retro will be “the backbone” of the fest, according to its new artistic director, Italian actor/director Giulio Base. Accordingly, an image of Brando – photographed when he was shooting Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris” – is featured on the poster for the fest’s upcoming 42nd edition, which will run Nov. 22-30.
Torino is Italy’s preeminent event for young directors and indie cinema, and is where Matteo Garrone and Paolo Sorrentino screened their first works. The festival’s lineup will be announced at a later date.

Sir Ridley Scott, the legendary filmmaker and grumpy grandpa extraordinaire, should probably be pictured in the dictionary next to the term "straight shooter." So when you ask him why he finally decided to make a sequel to "Gladiator", he's not going to default to studio-approved talking points. Instead, he'll cut right to the chase and tell you it all came down to finding a reason to make "Gladiator 2" other than for money.
"Well, economically, it makes sense," Scott told Deadline. (See what I mean?) Like most people, Scott felt the first film was "completely satisfactory, creatively complete, so why muck with it, right?" Of course, money talks in Hollywood, so he kept having conversations about the project for the next 20 years, to the point where it "started to spell itself out as an obvious thing to do, and that's how it evolved." Notably, the sequel nearly went in a...

William Petersen was a theater actor from Chicago when William Friedkin changed the course of his life. In 1984, the Oscar-winning director tapped the then-unknown performer to play Richard Chance, a Secret Service agent willing to bend rules and break laws in order to capture a shadowy counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe) in “To Live and Die in L.A.” The crime thriller was a return to form for Friedkin, who had summited the heights of the movie business with “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” only to suffer a string of disappointments. Petersen and Friedkin would later collaborate on a Showtime remake of “12 Angry Men” and two episodes of “CSI.” Friedkin died on Aug. 7 at the age of 87, and Petersen shared his reflections on his “greatest mentor and most brilliant friend.”

On March 11, 2022, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” premiered at the South By Southwest Film Festival. The film starred Michelle Yeoh as a laundromat business owner who travels through the multiverse, encountering adventures from alternate lives she could have led. The film co-starred Ke Huy Quan as her husband and Stephanie Hsu as her estranged lesbian daughter. It was well-received at the premiere and went on to receive near universal acclaim, raking in over $140 million at the box office. The film’s critical and commercial success began to generate Oscar buzz. It seemed like a surefire bet to get into multiple above-the-line categories, including acting nominations for Yeoh and Quan. Hsu looked like a dark horse contender.
One key performance in the film that had less chatter that summer was Jamie Lee Curtis as an IRS inspector targeting Yeoh’s laundromat business. Being the daughter of famous actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh,...

On the day he turned 16, Paul Mescal was on a stage, being presented with a cake by the cast and crew of his high school production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. “That’s the first thing I ever did, so I actually take great pride in it,” says Mescal of his public acting debut, playing the Phantom. (The entire production has been uploaded by the school to YouTube. Mescal is a gifted high baritone.) “That was the moment when I was like, ‘Oh fuck — this adrenaline is incredible,’ ” he says. “I’ve never felt a high like that.”
Imagine the high, then, that Mescal is feeling today, his 27th birthday. He’ll spend it on a stage once more, as the marquee draw of the hottest theater ticket in London, possibly even the English-speaking world. It’s a radical reworking of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire...

Cate Blanchett film marks the director's return to making movies in the States. But it's the stars who catch the eye
Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine is being welcomed as a return to late-period form for the writer-director. Well, it's a return to something, that's for sure. It's a return to America, where he's only made one movie in the last eight years – Whatever Works, which didn't – during his peregrinations across England and Europe. But it's not a full return to New York (except in flashbacks), which always makes me wonder if he isn't wanted for questioning over some heinous crime back in his beloved Gotham. Instead, most of Blue Jasmine was shot in San Francisco, a city for which Allen has little or no instinctive feel. It's also a return to A Streetcar Named Desire, whose broad plot outlines have been rather nakedly appropriated here by Allen, whether as...

Blue Jasmine may bring another Gold Statue to the talented Cate Blanchett, who gives a performance almost certain to put her on the list of Best Actress nominees for 2013. Come inside to check out our thoughts on Woody Allen's latest film!

Cast: Cate Blanchett as Jasmine, Sally Hawkins as Ginger, Alec Baldwin as Hal, Peter Sarsgaard as Dwight
Cate Blanchett (Elisabeth, Veronica Guerin, Hanna, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I’m Not There, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) has previously won an Oscar for her portrayal of Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator. Buzz is already building for her second, and it’s well deserved. She carries the entire film and lifts it above the limitations of the material.

New York — When Cate Blanchett was last in New York, in between her nightly performances in the acclaimed touring production of "Uncle Vanya," she would slip uptown, to the East Side, to stealthily research her role in Woody Allen's latest, "Blue Jasmine."
In it, Blanchett plays Jasmine, a socialite in breakdown, a modern Blanche DuBois (a role Blanchett played a few years ago on stage, the "detritus" of which she says stays with her), distraught and destroyed by the betrayal of her Bernie Madoff-like financier husband (Alec Baldwin). On Jasmine's stomping ground, the Upper East Side, Blanchett bent her ear to the neighborhood's accents of affluence.
"I drank way too much wine sitting in restaurants by myself," says Blanchett, today sitting in a midtown office in a sleeveless emerald green top and skirt.
The polished refinement, though, is only a small element – a surface that cracks – to Blanchett's enormously layered performance in "Blue Jasmine.

As the pill-popping, Vodka-swilling title character of "Blue Jasmine," Cate Blanchett joins a long line of actresses who have played crazy in Woody Allen films. No one has created more complex, multi-faceted female roles than the New York maestro, but let's face it: these gals are never more mesmerizing than when they're screaming, shouting, and throwing a major tantrum.
To celebrate this latest wacky inclusion, here's our list of the nine nuttiest female performances in Woody Allen films.
9. Christina Ricci, 'Anything Else' (2003)
At first glance, Amanda Chase (Christina Ricci) looks like she'd make a really great girlfriend, especially to a nerd like Jerry Falk (Jason Biggs). But looks can be deceiving: once you get to know Amanda in "Anything Else," you start to think that maybe Jerry should stick to dating apple pies. Based on the evidence of this film, the pastry would prove a more stable relationship.

Us actor best known for his role as the mafia boss Tony Soprano
James Gandolfini, who has died aged 51 of a heart attack, was one of those rare actors who was able to portray a violent, bullying, murderous, vulgar, serial adulterer, while simultaneously eliciting sympathy and understanding from television audiences. In 86 episodes from 1999 to 2007, in HBO's hit series The Sopranos, the balding, beefy, middle-aged Gandolfini, as Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mafia boss, managed to transcend any stereotyping of Italian-Americans (although the charge was still made) by showing the flawed character's vulnerable side.
While Tony Soprano does embody the close-knit Italian-American community, with its codes of masculinity, Gandolfini, who had studied the Sanford Meisner method of acting for two years, lived up to Meisner's exhortation to "find in yourself those human things which are universal". Gandolfini always claimed to be nothing like Tony Soprano: "I'm really basically just like a 260-pound Woody Allen.

James Gandolfini, who died suddenly at 51 on Wednesday (June 19), will forever be remembered for playing Tony Soprano. And rightfully so -- together with writer David Chase, he created one of the deepest and most compelling characters in recent TV history.
Gandolfini also had a varied and often very interesting film and stage career. Pre-"Sopranos" he often played heavies, and even after his star turn on the show he remained a character actor at heart, but later in his career more leading roles came his way. Here's a look at some of his more memorable roles.
"True Romance": After a few small roles in movies and a supporting part in the 1992 Broadway revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" opposite Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange*, Gandolfini got his first breakout role in the Quentin Tarantino-written thriller. Shia Labeouf is preparing to make his debut on Broadway.
The Transformers star will appear opposite Alec Baldwin in a revival of Lyle Kessler's 1983 drama Orphans, in which two brothers plot to kidnap a mobster, at the Schoenfeld theatre. Previews start on 19 March. Labeouf will play Treat, the elder and more controlling of the brothers, while Baldwin will play the old-school gangster Harold. Casting for Phillip, Treat's brother, has not yet been finalised. All three characters are orphans.
Baldwin is something of a Broadway veteran, having debuted in Joe Orton's Loot opposite Zoe Wanamaker in 1986. He has since played Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and Macbeth, as well as starring in another Orton farce, Entertaining Mr Sloane, off-Broadway.

Actor, potential mayor of NYC, blogger for The Huffington Post, and occasional paparazzo-puncher Alec Baldwin will return to the Great White Way in spring of 2013 for Lyle Kessler’s dark comedy Orphans.
In Kessler’s play, two grown orphan brothers living in the slums of Philadelphia decide to kidnap a wealthy, older man. An educated guess tells me that Baldwin will not be playing either of the poverty-stricken brothers.
Baldwin’s no stranger to Broadway; he was last seen in 2004 in the play “Twentieth Century”. Baldwin also lent his acting ability (and temper) to the iconic role of Stanley Kowalski in 2002’s “A Streetcar Named Desire”. It’s been a while since Baldwin has performed onstage rather than on a set, so it will be interesting to see his transition between stage and screen. Baldwin has also become much more of a household name since 2004 thanks to his turn as...

It will play at a Shubert-owned theatre to be announced. The rest of the cast and exact dates will be revealed later.
Balwin was last on Broadway in "Twentieth Century" in 2004. Before that, he played Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1992.

Alec Baldwin Alec Baldwin speaks onstage while accepting his Best Actor in a Comedy Series SAG Award for 30 Rock at the 18th Screen Actors Guild Awards. The SAG Awards ceremony was broadcast on TNT/TBS from the Shrine Auditorium on January 29, 2012, in Los Angeles, California. This was Baldwin's sixth consecutive Best Actor win for 30 Rock. This year's losers were Modern Family's Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet, The Office's Steve Carell, and Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer. (Photo by John Shearer/WireImage.) Additionally, Baldwin has been nominated for ten other SAG Awards, including five nods as a 30 Rock cast member (the cast won in 2009). Beverly Hills, Calif. -- The names were familiar: Kelsey Grammer, Matt LeBlanc, Claire Danes, Laura Dern and Jessica Lange. The television work for which they were honored by the Golden Globes Sunday night wasn't.
They are actors largely known for their work in film or in shows on commercial broadcast networks. Each took Golden Globe trophies for roles on new cable television series that won critical acclaim and commercial success in the past year, sometimes both.
Danes won her third Globe for portraying CIA agent Carrie Mathison on Showtime's new "Homeland." The series that explored terrorism and an Iraq war veteran also won a Golden Globe for best television drama.
Danes, who won her first Globe at age 15 for "My So-Called Life," remembered being so flustered then that she forgot to thank her parents.

I might be a gay man, but I’m still able to appreciate a good pair of legs on a woman. And by god if at 62 years old Jessica Lange still doesn’t have the sexy gams of a girl half her age.
She sat on stage following FX’s American Horror Story panel at the TCAs in a knee-length black dress, matching heels, and that familiar dazzling smile. Surrounding her, a small but eager group of TV journalists practically tripped over each other to get a word in edgewise. 90 percent of which, I might add, had nothing at all to do with the show she was there to promote.
Hey, it’s difficult to stay on topic when you’re dealing with a legend.
“I have a certain affinity [for] playing Southern women,” said Lange, who gives off a genteel if somewhat intimidating aura. “I mean, most of the characters...

FX has officially picked up and ordered 13 episodes for Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story. This is the same producing team that brought us Nip/Tuck and Glee. Here's a breakdown of the story and all of it's characters. I'm looking forward to this, I'm a big fan of the horror genre and there aren't enough good horror TV series out there.
American Horror Story revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish. The All Star cast features Dylan McDermott (The Practice) as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) as “Vivien Harmon,” Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as “Violet,” the Harmon’s teenage daughter; Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky, GreyGardens) in her first-ever regular series TV role as “Constance,” the Harmon’s neighbor; Evan Peters(One Tree Hill) as “Tate Langdon,...

Prom
Opens: April 29th 2011
Cast: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Summary: Portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events.
Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.
It's all very "The Breakfast Club" meets "10 Things I Hate About...

Despite being in negotiations to star as matriarch Victoria Barkley in Daniel Adams' and Kate Edelman Johnson's big screen remake of the '60s TV oater The Big Valley, Susan Sarandon is no longer involved. Instead, actress Jessica Lange will don the corset originally worn by the late, great Barbara Stanwyck.
Production will begin on July 19 on location in Baton Rouge. Set in the 1870’s, The Big Valley is the dramatic story of a wealthy ranching family and their conflicts.
Written and directed by Adams, the screenplay was inspired by the original pilot from the TV series, but also employs new material. The new film is being executive produced by Kate Edelman Johnson, whose late father Louis F. Edelman created the series, and produced by Straw Weisman and Steven Brandman.

During a December episode of 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy stepped in front of an ultra-powerful high-definition camera that revealed him to be a younger, thinner, even more debonair version of himself. In fact, it was footage of Jack Ryan, the dashing intelligence analyst Baldwin played in the submarine thriller, The Hunt for Red October. It’s been 20 years since Tom Clancy’s first novel sailed on to movie screens, but whenever Baldwin catches a glimpse of himself in his hunkish prime, he only notices his youthful naivety. "I can't help but think, 'Look how hard that guy is working,...

Alec Baldwin, '30 Rock'Having mastered the gruff swagger of NBC executive Jack Donaghy, Alec Baldwin is now able to take his corporate alpha male further into the shenanigans-filled backstage world of "30 Rock." Ultimately, though, it's Donaghy's multidimensionality that makes him such an endlessly watchable figure. Whether he's sparring with rival Devon Banks (Will Arnett), falling in love with caretaker Elisa (Salma Hayek), or bantering with workplace foil Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), Baldwin makes him the complete, complicated package.Donaghy's relationship with Lemon also continues to be a treat to watch, as the two pump up the gag factor while imparting life wisdom to each other. He's even charming when insulting her, as when he tells her, "You're like a swarthy, big-hipped Kelly Ripa." Though Donaghy's troubles rarely stray from white-collar worries, 2009 had him struggling with fatherhood and possibly losing his job due to the economy. These real-world concerns have helped...

Two Oscar news of different levels of importance caught everyone's attention: The new Oscar hosts and Danny Boyle's problem with his Slumdog Millionaire child actors. I'll deal with the hosts here... - - -
- - - While I'd love to see Hugh Jackman do it again and it would have been cool to see Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr team up and do some hilarious antics on the stage, but it seems they're not in the mood to host the Oscars. When it was announced that Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin would host the upcoming Awards show, then that's also fine with me. Steve Martin is cool and he can really make the Oscar awards night lively and fun, while Baldwin can take care of the more serious side. Of course, they're together in It's Complicated with Meryl Streep, who could have been a host too, but.

Chicago – Derick Martini’s “Lymelife,” starring Rory Culkin, Kieran Culkin, Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Emma Roberts, Timothy Hutton, and Cynthia Nixon is a dramatic slice of nostalgia for its co-writer/director. The film brings the wounds of his parent’s divorce to the surface in this acclaimed comedy/drama.
Just last week, Martini’s wife gave birth to their first child, but Derick wanted to talk about his other baby, his new film, a drama based on his own childhood as a product of divorce. The production notes for the film quote Martini - “It’s about change: how people change, and how when faced with change how they initially resist but ultimately have to embrace change because that’s life.”
