| The story of ugly Elsa who finds beauty
Eeva Kaarina Volanen plays Elsa, who has never felt like a girl and is called Santtu and also ugly Elsa after a fairy tale. She even wears pants (remember this is the 1940's).Elsa is bad from her mouth and hates boys and girls who do anything to have them. And those you can find from her family.Elsa decides to avenge. She starts wearing a dress and makes herself look pretty. That way she makes all the men her sisters and mother fancy fall for her.Edvin Laine's Ruma Elsa (1949) is mighty good old Finnish movie.Volanen, who had a great career in movies, is amazing as the boy girl.Arvo Lehesmaaa is brilliant as professor Taavi Harjula.Elsa Turakainen is wonderful as Vivi Kassel. And so are Liisa Tuomi and Rauha Rentola as Irma and Paula Kassel.Kullervo Kalske plays Pertti Oras, Elsa's childhood friend and is great in his part.Lasse Pöysti as Usko Aamunen is the funniest character in the movie. The scene, where Elsa is teaching Usko some chemistry, is just hilarious.Mr. Pöysti is phenomenal.Sylva Rossi plays Minni.Director's brother, Aarne Laine is Janitor. That part also Jalmari Rinne plays.Marita Nordberg and Matti Ranin play students. This was Nordberg's first movie appearance. Also the movie maker Matti Kassila is seen in the movie playing Waiting gentleman. This movie shows how stupid we men are.Not that we'd need movies to prove that.
