Tim Allen is one step closer to returning to ABC for a third time. The Alphabet net has given a pilot order to his latest sitcom, “Shifting Gears,” from 20th Television. Allen is on board to star and executive produce the multi-cam sitcom pilot — which is still a working title — which will also be written and executive produced by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully.
In the project, Allen plays Matt, the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker and Rick Messina are the non-writing exec producers on the show.
“Shifting Gears” continues Allen’s long association with ABC and Disney, including the long-running hit (1991-1997) “Home Improvement.” Allen later starred on ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” which aired on the Alphabet web from 2011 to...

What does "Cheers" and "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer have in common with the cast of "Bones"? A shared set. The beloved Fox crime series shared a set with a short-lived, oft-forgotten show that Grammer starred in between 2007 and 2008 titled "Back to You." Because both shows were Fox productions, the network made good use of a set that was built for Grammer's show but was then re-used for an episode of the fourth season "Bones."
The episode in question is "Man in the Outhouse," the third episode of "Bones" season 4, which aired in 2008. As revealed by Entertainment Weekly, the TV set that we see in the episode for "Busted by Bill" was actually the same TV studio set that was used by Grammer and his co-star Patricia Heaton, of "Everybody Loves Raymond" fame, on their show "Back to You." Not coincidentally, that show wrapped up its very brief, one-season run earlier...

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Phil Rosenthal hasn’t been to a country in Asia for his Netflix food travel series “Somebody Feed Phil” since the “Singapore” episode of Season 4 aired in 2020. But with the Season 7 debut Friday, the “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator is back in the east with four out of eight episodes, including an installment featuring one giant bucket-list destination Rosenthal has been anxiously dreaming about for years.
“I’ve always wanted to go to India, so Mumbai was a real thrill for me. I’ve always loved Indian food, I have so many beautiful Indian friends,” Rosenthal told Variety. “But there were two things that kept me away.”
First, he was “afraid” of the ethical complications of doing his goofy bits in a country with such deep contrasts in its population’s standard of living.
“They call Mumbai Maximum City because it has everything,” Rosenthal said. “You...

You’d be excused if you didn’t notice that Netflix recently added the forgotten sitcom My Wife and Kids to its servers. With the labor stoppages over and TV back up and running once again, streaming services are pushing full steam ahead to get regularly scheduled programming back on the market. It doesn’t seem like there would be any room for a show more known for its Nick at Nite run than its original broadcast on ABC, but anyone who ignores the Damon Wayans-centered sitcom is missing out on one of the funniest, most chaotic comedies of the 2000s.
At first glance, My Wife and Kids looks like your typical comedian vehicle from around this time period. So many stand-up comics got their own network sitcom that the genre turned into TV junk food during the late 20th century. Everybody Loves Raymond, Home Improvement, The King of Queens,...

The beloved procedural crime show "Bones" ran for an impressive 12 seasons, continuing the upward TV star trajectory for David Boreanaz after his work on shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," and helping to launch Emily Deschanel to become a household name after a slew of small roles in a handful of TV shows and movies.
As the co-stars of "Bones," Deschanel and Boreanaz naturally appeared in every single episode of the series. And while viewers know guest stars didn't pop up nearly as frequently, some casual watchers may think that some of the more familiar faces might have at least popped up one time per season. But as it turns out, out of all of the guest stars who graced the series from 2005-2017, only one performer managed to make at least one appearance across all 12 seasons: Patricia Belcher, who played Caroline Julian, a federal prosecutor for the U.

Kevin James wouldn't want to revive The King of Queens without Jerry Stiller, as he was an integral part of the show. Jerry Stiller died from natural causes in 2020. The sitcom recently gained some resurgence via memes of Doug and Carrie and discussions about the best episodes.
The King of Queens star and executive producer Kevin James explains why a revival can't happen. Debuting in 1998 by creators Michael J. Everybody Loves Raymond was one of the best sitcoms of the '90s and early 2000s. It's Seinfeld meets Home Improvement, with some of the most over-the-top and self-centered characters, all of whom are related, and many who live under the same roof. The Barones aren't exactly the most likable people in the world. Frank (Peter Boyle) is angry and Marie (Doris Roberts) is overbearing. The titular star, Raymond (Ray Romano), has lived a coddled life that's turned him into a dolt who thinks of himself first. One member of the family isn't as bad as the others. Older brother Robert (Brad Garrett) is the suffering one, an odd duck who gets some of the biggest laughs for his eccentricities. He's also the only one in the family who is easy to like most of the time. He's not without his faults, but Robert Barone is the heart and soul of Everybody Loves Raymond.

Sitcom characters often share the same first name as the actor playing them, creating a stronger association between the two personas. Sitcoms were commonly used as a promotional tool for the main actor, making the use of their real name beneficial for building their career. Using the actor's real name in a sitcom makes filming and communication easier, eliminating confusion and streamlining the process.
Sitcoms wouldn't be the same without their many traditions, but there's a certain quirk of the genre that's quite interesting: a lot of characters use their actors' real names. This trope is less common nowadays, but it's not gone. Although some may not think twice about this character trend, it can stick out like a sore thumb to others. Sitcom characters can sometimes become inseparable from the actors that portray them in the eyes of fans, and there's often a good reason why this can happen.

Everybody Loves Raymond was a popular family sitcom that followed the misadventures of Ray Barone and his often challenging but loving family. The show relied on classic sitcom tropes and characters, but still earned a large and loyal fan base with its warm family comedy. Each member of the Barone family, including Ray, Debra, Marie, Frank, Robert, and their children, had their own unique traits and storylines that contributed to the show's appeal.
While the family at the center of Everybody Loves Raymond might be a little larger than those seen in many other family sitcoms, their connections aren’t too hard to draw out. Everybody Loves Raymond was a huge hit when the family sitcom originally aired from 1996 to 2005. The show followed the trials and tribulations of the titular Ray Barone, a long-suffering sports journalist married to the demanding Debra. In classic sitcom fashion, Ray was constantly harangued by his wife,...

Since CBS’ Everybody Loves Raymond concluded in May 2005, it has been hawked around for a revival or reboot. Given the enormous popularity of the sitcom, it’s seemingly an easy call to greenlight at least a reunion special for the series often ranked among the best sitcoms of all time. But most of the key players have been skeptical about bringing the Barones back to the screen. This includes the show’s leading man Ray Romano, who asserted on Bill Maher’s talk show that there’s no possibility for a reboot. The show created by Philip Rosenthal premiered on September 13, 1996,...

In a recent segment on Real Time With Bill Maher, Ray Romano was being interviewed when the subject of his old CBS sitcom Everbody Loves Raymond came up. No matter how much success Romano will ever have, he'll always be remembered most for this series, which ran from 1996-2005. He and the crazy cast of characters that made up his TV family were must-see TV — and still are to this day, nearly two decades after its end. During the interview, Maher brought up reboots, asking Romano if he would ever bring back Everybody Loves Raymond. The guy who once played Ray Barone had an interesting and honest answer, saying of reboots: "They're never as good. We want to leave with our legacy with what it is.”...

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.

Ray Romano says a reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond is "out of the question" due to the deaths of key cast members Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts. Romano believes revivals don't live up to the originals and wants to leave the show's legacy as it is. Despite the desire of some cast members to continue, Romano and Phil Rosenthal, who ran the show, felt it was time for it to end after Season 8.
Everybody Loves Raymond won't follow in the footsteps of shows like Full House, Fraiser, and Roseanne. Ray Romano, who starred in the Emmy Award-winning series as the titular character, says a revival just isn't in the cards for the esteemed sitcom. During a recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher (via Variety), Romano said a reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond was "out of the question," namely because two members of its core cast have passed since the series' 2005 conclusion.

The last few years have seen a number of classic sitcoms get revivals – but Everybody Loves Raymond won't be one of them. Creator/star Ray Romano says the show will never return. On this week's episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Romano threw cold water on the idea, "As far as a reboot, well, it’s now out of the question because unfortunately the parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts." Boyle and Roberts, who played Ray Barone's overbearing parents on the series, passed away in 2006 and 2016, respectively.

Reboots of beloved shows from decades past can be easy ways to trap viewers through nostalgia. Some can break off and start to feel like their own entity (as with Frasier), while others are just cheapo cash grabs that bring nothing fresh to the original premise. But Ray Romano won’t even bother trying to find out how a reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond would fare with audiences, saying it is absolutely “out of the question.”
As for why Romano is shutting down even the idea of an Everybody Loves Raymond reboot, he has plenty of reasons, starting with the simple point that “they’re never as good…and we want to leave with our legacy as what it is.” There, too, would be two key cast members missing: Peter Boyle, who passed away in 2006 just one year after the sitcom went off the air, and Doris Roberts, who died...

Many classic sitcoms have gotten reboots and revivals, and Ray Romano has revealed if there's any chance of that happening with Everybody Loves Raymond.
On Friday, Romano appeared on Bill Maher's HBO series Real Time, and he was asked about the possibility of bringing back the Emmy-winning sitcom. The actor, who recently starred in the Max sci-fi dramedy series Made for Love, suggested that an Everybody Loves Raymond revival is "out of the question." This is largely due to beloved stars from the original series having since passed away, while Romano also shared his belief that reboots are just "never as good" in comparison.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” will not be getting a reboot, according to Ray Romano.
On “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Romano addressed the possibility of a reboot, saying, “As far as a reboot, well, it’s now out of the question because unfortunately the parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.”

Ray Romano says reviving Everybody Loves Raymond is "out of the question" due to the loss of key cast members. Romano believes reboots are never as good and wants to preserve the show's legacy. Despite the rest of the cast wanting to continue, Romano and creator Phil Rosenthal thought it was time to end the show.
Ray Romano candidly addresses the possibility of reviving Everybody Loves Raymond, following the success of revivals like Night Court and Frasier. Debuting in September 1996 with Phil Rosenthal as the creator, the CBS comedy centered around sportswriter Ray Barone (Romano) and his dysfunctional family. It ran for nine seasons, airing its finale in May 2005, bolstered by an impressive cohort of actors that included Patricia Heaton, Brad Garrett, Doris Roberts, and Peter Boyle.
In an interview on Real Time with Bill Maher to discuss his directorial debut movie Somewhere in Queens, Romano answers about the chances of reviving Everybody Loves Raymond.

On the latest episode of Real Time, Bill Maher remembered Norman Lear, who died earlier this month at age 101, as someone who “opened a lot of doors” in television.
The host is preparing to head into his 22nd year of doing the late-night talk show, which got him thinking. He explained how the sitcom genius’ death put things in perspective for him because “without somebody like that, I couldn’t do what I do.”
“I think he opened a lot of doors, but a lot of those doors are shut,” Maher added. “TV is not what it was in the ’70s.”
He proceeded to ask his guests, Laura Coates, a CNN anchor and senior legal analyst, and Walter Kirn, an American novelist and literary critic, if they thought people “could do anything like what he did back then because I don’t think you could?”

Frasier got one. Roseanne got one. But Ray Romano says don’t hold your breath for an Everybody Loves Raymond reboot.
“As far as a reboot, well its out of the question,” Romano told Bill Maher on Real Time tonight.

Secondly and maybe more literally, Romano observed, “its out of the question because now his [Ray Barone’s] parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.”
Maher praised him for not going back for another big payday. “You never went to a reboot. You had one of the most successful sitcoms of all time.”
Romano said he wanted to go out on top.
“The rest of the cast wanted it to go on,” he said, “but myself and [show runner] Phil Rosenthal, we thought it was time.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Ray Romano, who starred in the incredibly popular CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 to 2005, will be starring in an eight-episode dark comedy series called No Good Deed for the Netflix streaming service. Now Deadline reports that Romano is being joined in the cast by another sitcom legend: Lisa Kudrow, who played the character Phoebe Buffay on the incredibly popular NBC show Friends from 1994 to 2004.
Coming from Dead to Me creator Liz Feldman, No Good Deed will follow three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.
Romano is taking on the role of Paul Morgan. “Constantly stressed and flat broke, Paul is a contractor desperate to retire, pay off his debts and escape LA.

Exclusive: Emmy-winning stars from two of the biggest sitcoms of the late 1990s and early 2000s are coming together in a new Netflix series. Friends alumna Lisa Kudrow has been tapped to star opposite Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Ray Romano in Netflix’s No Good Deed, an eight-episode dark comedy series from Dead To Me creator Liz Feldman.
