Investigating bizarre murders in which the victims' eyes are ceremoniously gouged out, the Legacy members note the similarity to murders committed five years earlier by Raymond Corvus, currently on Death Row at San Quentin. They further discover that all the victims were in some way involved in Corvus' trial.

Following Jennifer Hollybrook's funeral, her fiancé, Jeffery Sandor, tells Alex he'd like to help with the investigation. After she leaves, Sandor approaches Father Norman, the priest who gave Corvus his Last Rites. When Sandor defends Corvus' actions, the priest becomes scared and runs off.

They learn that in 1954, Mary Dunworth was lynched by unknown persons who pulled her from her jail cell as she awaited trial for allegedly setting fire to the home of Robert Clay, the fiancé who reportedly jilted her, and members of his family.
