Big Monsters, Big Explosions, Big Action!
Miles better than any Godzilla films (I saw this the same summer of the American Godzilla, and it more than compensated for that tragedy!) Perhaps the best of the series of 90's Gamera films, it is self contained (Gamera 3 requires viewing both 1 & 2) while fixing all of the problems that plagued the original- overly long battles, slow pace, cheesey dialogue, and somewhat fake effects. What we get is a better looking, more exciting film- to "Gamera" what "Aliens" was to "Alien"! This movie triumphs most in quality over everything against it- a low budget is compensated for (much like the original) by excellent camera angles and incredible monster design, which create the feeling of being a part of the interstellar grudge match between the giant flying turtle and the evil insect invaders "Legion"! In the end, you can't help but feel like a little kid again! This movie does what the new Godzilla never did- win you over with its charm, so that by the end you can't help but root for Gamera, despite dated effects! If you like monster movies, by all means hunt this down, then see Gamera 3!
