When I'm out of town, mail tends to pile up, and when I get back, it's hard to sort the pile and figure out what to watch or read first. It was not difficult to figure out what to read first when I got back from Toronto, because one of the packages I had waiting for me contained "The Act Of Seeing," a new book curated by Nicolas Winding Refn and written by Alan Jones. That's all I knew about it before I sat down with it, but I immediately lost two full hours to just slowing paging through, taking in all the remarkable sleazy detail of each of the posters reproduced inside and getting lost in the crisp, engrossing text that Alan Jones has put together for each of the films. What posters? What films? When I got Refn on the phone to talk about the book, my first...

Here are more nerdy spots in the final two Trek films to date: Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness...
Spoilers for Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness lie ahead.
Like their forerunners, the two latest Star Trek films, in their semi-rebooted, alternative universe, are replete with famous faces from outside the franchise, surprising cameos and multiple little touches that raise a smile.
With the third film in the rebooted series coming next year, the 50th anniversary of the debut of Star Trek on TV in 1966, let's take a look at a few of the geeky nods in Jj's Trek films.
1. Star Trek Nemesis left a lot of dangling threads, on purpose, as a story treatment for a direct sequel was already being worked on. Unfortunately due to some less than stellar decisions by executives, the release date of the film was repositioned and the decision...

The comedian also urges readers to go see “Boyhood” and “Into the Woods”
Louis Ck dropped new $5 stand-up special “Live at the Comedy Store” — his sixth (video below) — on Tuesday, and celebrated with a very lengthy, occasionally rambling email blast to fans.
Plugging his independent project, the comedian’s note discussed his history with the industry, lamented having to cancel the last of four Madison Square Garden concerts for underwhelming Winter Storm Juno and even pushed his followers to see “Boyhood” and “Into the Woods.”
Ck’s personal rep told TheWrap that there are no plans to reschedule the Msg date at the moment.

Krypton, Gotham, Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead spin-off. Is there no end to TV's thirst for commissioning prequels?
With rumours arriving that The Walking Dead spin-off may be a prequel, hot on the heels of the news that Syfy is pursuing a series about Superman's grandfather, titled Krypton, there are officially no more jokes. Anything you might say about making a comic book series set some ridiculous amount of time before the real story starts happening, can and will be seriously considered as a pitch by some network, somewhere.
A Newsroom-style series about The Daily Planet before Clark Kent started working there? A psychological procedural featuring Dr. Harleen Quinzel but no Joker? A jungle-set adventure series about Gorilla Grodd's granddad? We could keep going until the phone rings and someone makes us an offer for a pilot, but that would be an unnecessary amount of pre-amble before getting to the point,...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Under the Dome, Suits, The Bridge and Graceland!
1 | True Blood fans, what was more mind-numbingly boring — Terry’s funeral (yep, we’re still not over that) or the finale’s seemingly endless town hall meeting?
2 | Has The Newsroom completely forgotten about Will’s death threat from Season 1? Speaking of which, where’s Lonny?
3 | Why do TV shows — most recently, Breaking Bad — ask us to believe that one person could dig a sizable hole in the ground by themselves,...

If every spring in New York means that when greenery finally blooms on scrawny trees Judith Light assumes her rightful place on Broadway, life would be pretty wonderful.
Trees finally blossomed this week, and Light is back on stage, in the very funny "The Assembled Parties" at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, so life is pretty wonderful.
"The Assembled Parties" likely works best on this island, and to those who get the jokes with Yiddish words. Still, Richard Greenberg has written a brilliant play full of the sort of dialog that feels sharp enough to have come from someone who drank at the Algonquin Round Table.
This has the feel of old New York, set in a rambling upper West Side apartment. It opens in the kitchen as Julie (Jessica Hecht, Broadway's "Harvey," TV's "Breaking Bad") is cooking and chatting with Jeff (Jeremy Shamos, Broadway's "Clybourne Park," TV's "Fringe"), her son Scotty's pal.

Peter Gunn: The Complete Series is now available for the first time ever as a 12-dvd box set from Timeless Media Group… all 114 episodes, with a running time of over 58 hours.
Peter Gunn – created and produced by Blake Edwards – ran for three seasons – from 1958 to 1961. This classic detective show was a delightful blend of film noir and fifties cool, featuring a modern jazz score by Henry Mancini (a bonus CD of the soundtrack is included in the set), outbreaks of the old ultra-violence, a gallery of eccentric and sleazy characters (usually informants, gangsters and Beat Generation bohemians), and great acting by series leads Craig Stevens (as Gunn), Lola Albright (as his squeeze, sultry nightclub singer Edie Hart) and Herschel Bernardi (as Gunn’s friend and competitor Lieutenant Jacoby, who seems to work all by himself 24 hours a day...

Kris Tapley analyzes the Oscar race for Best Animated Feature: "Currently there are 18 titles assumed eligible for the award, which has been dished out at the annual Oscars for 11 years now. And that 12-year history has shown an interesting progression for the category ... traditional animation is well-represented amid the usual CG flurry in 2012, as is stop-motion. A pair of this year's contenders even make brief use of live action footage, while another uses traditional two-dimensional animated characters placed into computer-generated 3D environments. Claymation even makes an appearance in one instance." In Contention Tony Awards Adminstrative Committee meets for the first time to consider eligibility for 2013 awards. From the press release: "The four productions discussed include: 'Harvey'; 'Bring It On: The Musical'; 'Chaplin' and 'An Enemy of the People'. The committee has made the following determinations: Jessica Hecht a...

A new Broadway season is about to begin and, with it, new life has been brought to my posts. After over 900 posts, 50 comments, over 325 Tony nominees and over 75 winners in the two-and-a-half years I blogged independently about the Tony Awards, I am proud to be joining the team at ScottFeinberg.com.
Without any further ado, I would like to begin with a look ahead at the Broadway shows that will be coming up this year. I have made this list as comprehensive as I could given what information is available but, as is often the case, there is much more data available right now about the fall season (September through the winter holidays) than the spring season (Christmas through the Tony Awards in June) on Broadway. I will update this post with more details as information becomes available.

The return of Hardman, a blocked merger, an angry girlfriend and having your former best friend rat you out to one of your bosses and cost you your job?
Yeah, that’s Mike’s life alright, and it all came crashing down on him on the Suits season 2 premiere, "She Knows."
I almost thought that Jessica Hardman had bought into Mike’ s story that he was “not like the other kids.” But I have to give her credit for not only seeing right through it, but calling Harvey out on it directly.
I do believe there was at least one portion of Mike’s tale that was completely and utterly true, and that was his reason for choosing law. It was about time we learned what led to the untimely and tragic death of Mike’s beloved parents. Who knew they died at the hands of a drunk driver, and...

6.33pm: It's the Orange British Academy Film Awards, live as you like from London's Royal Opera House. Outside the stage door, the rain is falling and the chauffers cup their hands to light their fags. Two starlets pick their way through the puddles while over on the corner, the busker is keening his way through the Eagles' back catalogue. "And in the master's chamber, they gather for the feast," he sings at the starlets. "They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast." I'm guessing this refrain will run like a loop through my brain until the last prize is dolled out.

Actor who was at his best in shadowy roles
The actor Maury Chaykin, who has died aged 61 after a heart-valve infection, was an American and a Canadian citizen, and his career reflected his dual nationality. In the Us, he was a familiar face, if not a recognisable name, playing small but telling roles in major films. His breakthrough came in Dances With Wolves (1990), playing Major Fambrough, who sends Kevin Costner on his frontier assignment and then kills himself. Chaykin's only leading role was in the cable TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001), as the titular detective who refuses to leave his house, delegating that to his assistant (Timothy Hutton).
In Canada, Chaykin was something of a national treasure. He won a Genie award for best actor for his performance as a Brian Wilson-like burned-out rock star in Whale Music (1994), gave remarkable performances in three films directed by Atom Egoyan...

Plexus Publishing sent word over to Fango on its new book, Zombie Holocaust: How The Living Dead Devoured Pop Culture. Set for release May 19, it takes a look at the history of the walking deceased and how they’ve influenced our lives and pop culture in the process.
Written by David Flint (co-author with Harvey Fenton of Ten Years Of Terror: British Horror Films Of The Seventies) and pegged as an illustrated history, Holocaust explores the undead’s origins as voodoo-controlled Haitian field workers, then traces their evolution through the cannibalistic hordes of George A. Romero’s films and their many imitators to the controversial fast zombies of today.

We'll have lots of guests at Fantastic Fest this year, more than ever before. Here are just a few of the many interesting people who'll be joining us this year, in no particular order. We'll continually update our roster so keep an eye on this page.
Filmmakers and Actors
Norihiro Koizumi (Gachi Boy: Wrestling With A Memory)
A young, talented director who is quickly making his mark in the Japanese filmmaking scene. At the tender age of 25, he directed his first major feature-length film, “Midnight Sun.” “Midnight Sun” was not only critically-acclaimed, but became a commercial hit, grossing over 1 billion yen at the Japanese boxoffice. His latest film, “Gachi Boy Wrestling with a Memory,” won the grand prix at the Udine Far East Film Festival.

We printed a few little nuggets about Fantastic Fest in our most recent printed Alamo guide, but as not everyone has access to that, I thought it would be fair to mirror those tidbits on the Fantastic Fest website. The most important in my opinion is the tweak to the badge system. We are attempting to eliminate the long and sometimes frustrating lines that form for regular badge holders who are hoping to get tickets to the really big movies.
Here's the scoop from the printed guide. We are working on a major website overhaul soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
