| Just a good bit of fun!!
I don't usually comment on this, I don't like to portray a movie as being good or bad just on my opinion, as everyone has their own tastes and needs when it comes to cinema. But god damn, why do so many people hate this film.

Firstly, this is not a serious film, it has never happened nor will it ever. This film is just damn good fun to watch...the explosions, the suspense, the cheesy one-liners...its not trying to tell you that aliens are coming to blow the s**t of of us...its entertainment. To all the people here that have said this is the worst movie guys need need to watch more movies, because if this is the worst movie ever then im Santa clause! To put it simply, this is 2 and a half hours of fun filled, edge of the seat (occasionally have a laugh) action...and nothing else.

Why cant people just enjoy a independence day for what it is (as mentioned above)...not why its improbable etc etc etc we all know that duh! This film is entertaining, full stop!! and thats all its supposed to be.

Did You Know?

The first showings of the film took place on July 2, 1996, the same day that the events in the movie start.

SETI Chief: If this isn't an insanely beautiful woman, I'm hangin' up.
SETI technician: Sir, I - I- I think you should listen to this.

When Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are in the mothership, Will says that once the missile is fired they have 30 seconds to get out of the ship before it explodes. The sequence of events, portrayed in real-time, from the start of the countdown to the detonation is 93 seconds. By the time 30 seconds has elapsed; they are just barely getting to the inner-triangle opening, with 23 seconds remaining. From here, it takes an additional 40 seconds to traverse 'the triangle' and exit the ship; with another 10 seconds passing after clearing the doors. The timer now shows 10 seconds remaining. Basically (according to the countdown), the first 30 seconds were depicted as being only 7 having elapsed; and the 50 seconds after that being only 13. Everything was in real-time.

Crazy Credits

"Animal action was monitored by the American Humane Association. No animals or aliens were harmed in the making of this film."

Alternate Versions

In most versions shown in cinemas and also the ones available on video, scenes are missing that stress the global dimension of the alien attack. In these scenes, international tv-journalists report about the devastation in their respective countries, and the destroying of international cities is shown (e.g. Paris). The cast list still contains some of these reporters, e.g. it names Jessica Cardinahl as German reporter, and also Korean and Russian reporters. These scenes were interesting, as they illustrate that the aliens are not an American problem, but a global one.
