We hereby declare today Festival Announcement Day! The first wave of announcements from the November 2016 edition of the Night Visions International Film Festival has arrived, joining a bevy of other festivals making known their lineups in what could easily be described as a tidal wave of genre goodness. Night Vision is the biggest genre film fest in the Nordic region. It's celebrating its 20th anniversary, which is truly remarkable. I attended the spring edition last year, surrounded by rabid fans who were very open to anything new and fresh. This November's edition features Finnish premieres of titles that should look splendid on the screens of Kinopalatsi cinema, located in the heart of Helsinki, a most beautiful city. Here's the official verbiage: ----- From the...

Forty-five.
Forty-five minutes.
It took Forty-five Freaking Minutes for The Final Project to even Attempt competent horror spooks, 99% of which ultimately end up being face-planting failures. Guess how long it took for the first shaky Go-Pro death? Fifty-five minutes. And for the first jump scare? Over. An. Hour. You’ve got an hour-and-twenty-minutes worth of film to watch, yet nothing “endearing” happens until minute forty-five. Are you sensing my frustration? The Final Project is the film school assignment from your worst indie horror nightmares, ripping-off every major player along the way. Anyone can make a found footage movie – but that doesn’t mean you should.
Taylor Ri’chard’s film follows six college students as they spend a night instigating ghouls at the Lafitte Plantation, a large estate nestled deep in Vacherie, Louisiana’s marshy backwoods. The damned location boasts a history of Civil War bloodshed, and many believers claim...

It’s a shame when a film’s ending nullifies the preceding hour-plus worth of content, but such are my feelings on Eytan Rockaway’s The Abandoned. I was engaged for most of the its entirety, chilled by the stony isolation of a dilapidated luxury building. Atmosphere and tension go a long way towards the end of Act I and an eerily haunting Act II, but an Act III ending jumps into a realm that simply doesn’t have to be addressed. There’s an extension into a more personal story, one that throws away horror for something more human – more affecting – yet it’s one of the film’s major downfalls. Rockaway pulls the rug out from unsuspecting horror fans in this moment, jumping ship in a way that’s neither emotional, nor powerfully satisfying.

Treyarch
The latest entry into the Call of Duty franchise is here, and though they typically sell on the strength of their multiplayer offerings, the campaign shouldn’t be ignored either, especially this year, where Treyarch have undeniably taken advantage of the new three-year development cycle to deliver a more ambitious (if deeply flawed) single-player jaunt.
Longer, harder and more cinematic, it’s an impressive shift away from the sub-5 hour campaigns of previous games, but what’s really staggering about it is the bizarre existential direction in which the plot goes, unquestionably brave but at the same time bordering on incoherence.
Some may praise it for its general ballsiness while others may find themselves begging for the days of a more simplistic, easy-to-follow plot, but the end result is the same regardless of your opinion: it’s an incredibly strange game, from the new mechanics introduced to the complete...

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin revealed on his official website today that Cinemax has ordered a pilot for a TV series based on his 1980s novella The Skin Trade. The author confirmed that he will not write the script for the show, or serve as the showrunner, because he is too busy finishing his sixth Game of Thrones novel which fans have been eagerly awaiting for years. The Skin Trade centered on Willie Flambeaux, a collections agent who happens to be a werewolf, and his friend, Randi Wade, a private investigator, who discover a dark secret behind a series of grisly murders in their decaying industrial city. Here's what George R.R. Martin had to say about the new series on his official website.

The next "Game of Thrones" could be right around the corner, with author George R.R. Martin announcing that Cinemax has optioned the rights to another one of his works.
Martin, who penned the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series that inspired "Thrones," revealed the news on his blog, writing that Cinemax has already ordered a pilot script based on "The Skin Trade," a novella Martin released in the 1980s that he describes as "werewolf noir." The story was originally released as part of a horror anthology called "Night Vision 5," which also featured a tale from Stephen King; it's been reprinted as a standalone novella several times since then, and has also been adapted into a comic book series and graphic novel.
According to Martin, he originally tried to bring "The Skin Trade" to TV way back in 1991, writing, "I have always thought there was a TV series (or maybe...

Blumhouse has always been a studio that I have been wary on. I’m not the hugest fan of the Paranormal Activity franchise, with the exception of Paranormal Activity 3. The Purge films are ok for what they are but I guess the highest ranking films from the company would be Insidious and Sinister. Unless, you want to count Whiplash – which could be conceived as a psychological horror film. Regardless, I’m glad there is a studio doing what Blumhouse does.

As a critic of media, who semi-frequently branches out into product reviews, it’s incredibly rare that a product, no matter what kind, meets my expectations when I wasn’t actively after the thing beforehand. I think of this as something of a “door-to-door salesman reaction”. It’s a reaction that I actually try hard not to have, but usually with little success.
I mention this merely for the sake of a specific kind of full disclosure. Though there is a sense in which I suspect everyone is the target market for a Watchbot Wireless Home Security Camera, because even just as a theory, it’s fantastically cool, they also cost money, which might trim down that market considerably. Thus, apart from one very specific use, which is a fluke really, I don’t imagine the gadget fills a need for me.

The best part of showing off each individual play style is that fans are given extremely clear definitions of how the game scores your individual actions. Zero Dark Thirty Directed by: Kathryn Bigelow Written by: Mark Boal Starring: Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Ehle, Harold Perrinau, Joel Edgerton, Mark Duplass and James Gandolfini Kathryn Bigelow’s latest drama chronicling the (true?) story of the behind-the-scenes hunt for Osama bin Laden has amassed both critical accolades and controversy. Zero Dark Thirty is irrefutably a top-notch suspense drama, but your enjoyment of the film will lie greatly in your ability to mentally navigate through a quagmire of details, names and locations before the film’s third act climax. The necessity of so much information stuffed into a nearly three hour run time makes for a challenging viewing. Thirty is ambitious, if not ostentatious, but the ultimate payout is worth the frustration, and the final thirty minutes consists of one of the most suspenseful action sequences of 2012, all the more chilling because it is based on true events.

Not since Y2K, has there been any other creature, character, or event (fictional or otherwise) that people have more thoroughly prepared for than geeks have for a zombie apocalypse. Sure, you may have started out just joking around with your friends about how you would go about taking a zombie out. But that has now led to you keeping baseball bats near your bed, and an extra pair of running shoes in your car... juuuuuuust in case. If someone asks you about the sudden appearance of zombie-preparedness paraphernalia floating about your person, you laugh it off, but then look at your friend for suspicious bite marks.

Tuesday was already the traditional album release day in the U.S. by March 31, 1987. Music fans' choices among the new releases that day included Close to the Bone by the Thompson Twins, The Circus by Erasure, and the two albums I refer to in the headline: Prince's Sign o' the Times and Suzanne Vega's Solitude Standing. Both of the latter artists had proven their talent by that point, and these releases were eagerly anticipated.
Sign o' the Times (Warner Bros.) was a double LP (barely under 80 minutes), always a major statement (discounting live doubles). It is to Prince what There's a Riot Goin' On was to Sly & the Family Stone: an album of schizophrenic swings between dire warnings of social disaster, personal darkness and confusion, and seemingly desperate attempts to stave it all off by often-lascivious partying -- and also an artistic peak.

Damn, man. That was one of the best hours of television we've ever been given. And I don't mean "we" as in "Pretty Little Liars fans." I mean "we" as in "human beings on this planet." I'm going to recap in a non-linear way this week because I want to focus most of my energy on our intrepid little lesbian sleuth.
So, Emily. Frankly, Emily doesn't have time to deal with A's bullshit right now because she and Maya have got stuff. They've taken their relationship from occasional footsie to making out like the lesbianest thing you have ever seen. And I mean that in every possible way. They cuddle and pet each other's hair and talk about their feelings, then hardcore makeout with their faces, and then pause to cuddle and talk about their feelings some more. Emily's feelings are mostly: Bummed about the swim team, excited her mom is still alive,...

Jaleel White (Family Matters) was at the TCA Winter Press Tour today to talk about his new series on Syfy called Total Blackout, a Us adaptation of the Danish game show of the same name. The series is a half-hour game show in which contestants will battle each other (and their phobias) in a series of challenges.
The main structure of the show is three rounds in which there are no lights, no blindfolds and the players have to identify items in the dark or complete other physical challenges. Night vision cameras will catch all the action.
The TCA panel featured a live demo of the process in which several TV actors and personalities participated, including Sam Huntington (Being Human), Jenni Pulos (Interior Therapy With Jeff Lewis), Sabina Kelley (Best Ink), Sarah Colonna (Chelsea Lately). They were all tasked with identifying objects in 3 tanks, which included a feather duster, a foot and eels in water.

"Dark Shadows" director Tim Burton will be adapting a haunted gothic novel about a dark family tragedy (shocking, we know), "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children."
The story comes from author Ransom Riggs' book of the same name that feels similar to Edward Gorey by way of a vintage photo nightmare depicting … peculiar children (a few of the misfits include a girl who had the ability to hold fire in her hands, another who always levitated off the ground, and there were twins who could talk without actually speaking … ). Teenage Jacob visits the home in question, located on a remote island off the coast of Wales. Once there he realizes that the abandoned abode holds a darker and more dangerous secret than previously imagined. Get more on the news over here. We've got some more news on yet another Mark Millar comic book property. Universal Pictures is currently in negotiations to pick up the movie rights to his awesome comic series War Heroes. The film rights were previously help by Sony Pictures but for some reason they never did anything with it which is a shame, because this comic will make for an amazing film.
War Heroes is about a American super-soldier program. After America goes to war with Iran, the people eventually just get fed up with it and people stop signing up for the military. To upgrade the military and entice people to join they develop a set of pills that give regular soldiers super hero super powers. Powers like Night Vision, flying, super strength, telekinesis, and more. Like all awesome military developments it ends up in the wrong hands.

Hey, look, it’s Catwoman! A scant day after releasing your first look at Henry Cavill in his Man of Steel underoos, Warner Bros. have now released your first look at Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming “The Dark Knight Rises” via the film’s Official Site. For some reason she’s tooling around on Batman’s batcycle/pod/thingie. Or at least, I think that’s Batman’s ride. Or did movie version Catwoman get her own wheels? My Catwoman comic book roots don’t go that far, but as I recall she spent most of her time hopping rooftops and sneaking into windows and what have you. You know, cat burglar-y stuff. The goggles look wonky, too, but maybe that’s just me. I’m guessing they’ve been high-tech’ed up. Night vision, etc. Maybe they’ll even fire lasers now.

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of Survivor Redemption Island - Episode 13.
I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk about how bad this season is, either because of the dominance of Boston Rob, or the predictability of pretty much everything after the first three episodes, or Redemption Island as a whole. I’ll agree that this definitely hasn’t been the best season, but let me ask you this: without Rob or Phillip on your screen this season, how boring would it have been then?
On to tonight’s episode, the final show before Sunday’s Season Finale…
My Random Thoughts:
- Previously on..Survivor. Ometepe was forced to turn on each other after Zapatera was completely eliminated, Phillip claims to be faking his crazy ways to portray "the villain" (yeah, right!), and Andrea was blindsided at the last Tribal Council.
Meanwhile, the Night Vision recap told us that Ashley just loves blindsides,...

Here's a fun new film clip from the Norwegian film Troll Hunter. I thought this movie was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed watching it. I recommend you check it out when you get a chance. The clip that was just released is called Night Vision, and it shows the Troll Hunting team being attacked by a troll.
Here's the Synopsis:
The doc jumps off from the concept that the Norwegian government has been hiding the fact that they have a secret population of trolls - real, actual trolls - living on game preserves in the far north of the country, kept safe and secure and out of the public eye to prevent mass panic should people realize that these fairy tale creatures are real. Those high tension power lines you see stretching out over the horizon in unpopulated areas, seemingly going nowhere? Not power lines at all but...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of Survivor Redemption Island Episode 10.
After last week’s predictable double elimination of former Zapatera members, are we finally going to see an interesting episode, or are we in for the continued systematic post-merge dismantling along Tribal lines? Is the Redemption Island “duel” actually going to be a three-person challenge? And why is Phillip playing the Race Card?
My Random Thoughts:
- Previously on…Survivor. Jeff’s voice-over reminded us that Sarita said David crumbles under pressure, and David didn’t like that. I couldn’t decide whether that meant we were going to see David absolutely kill the Redemption Island challenge, or suck donkeys again. But I knew for certain at this moment that it was going to be one or the other. I’m getting a little tired of the Previously segments telling us what they think we need to know for this episode.

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of Survivor Redemption Island - Episode 3.
I was re-watching a couple of scenes from last week’s episode a few days ago, and I noticed something that really bothered me. In the repetition of the opening scene on the beach when Jeff was giving the instructions to the new contestants, when he delivered his dramatic line ‘…you will Not…(dramatic pause)…go home,” it was followed by Bible-Thumper Matt grasping his head and exclaiming “Whaaaaaaat?”
Now, this is my pet peeve. Matt obviously heard what he said, but I find that Reality TV contestants always have to sell their utter disbelief at what they’re hearing. It’s driving me nuts. It drives me nuts in real life too. When it happens to me, and someone says “What?!”, I now tend to respond with “Well, I’m pretty sure you heard me, but I can repeat myself if you like.

Do you remember the thrill of anticipation when you raced through the aisles of a toy store to see if that one splendid piece of plastic you’d been obsessing over for weeks was waiting for you on a shelf? I certainly do, because I still feel it just about every time I’m in a toy store, a Target, or even the local food store. "Glee" star Chord Overstreet has set rumor that he is dating Rumer Willis straight. During an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his Kiis-fm morning show, Chord stated, "We're just friends," although adding that Rumer "is a nice girl."
Chord is romantically linked to Rumer after spotted spending time together at Tao in Las Vegas earlier this month with some of their friends. On this, the "iCarly" actor said, "If you go out in public anywhere, people are going to assume you are dating."
As for the picture of him and Rumer holding hands and sharing hearty laugh at the Night Vision presents an Evening Affair with Seth Macfarlane party in Beverly Hills on October 9, Chord explained, "She tried to get me to dance and I'm not a really good dancer."
"So I was hesitant on that one," Chord added, referring to his weird look at the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

I had a slice of pizza today from three different places. That's a good day. This happened because I set myself up for a tough day. Back to back to back movies at the same theatre. 3pm, 6pm and 9pm starts. I didn't really have much choice as far as cuisine goes because time was a factor. First up is Let Me In. It's an adaptation of a swedish novel called "Låt den rätte komma in" by John Lindqvist. The novel was first adapted into film back in 2008 with Sweden's Let the Right One In. Now, not only was Let the Right One in one of the best film of 2008, but it was one of the best movies of the last decade. Needless to say, Let Me In had some big shoes to fill. Here's a quick plotline: A bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.
