Tommy is an unemployed mechanic who spends most of his time in a bar (Trees Lounge) in a small blue collar town. He seems to always be thinking, "If only X then I could stop drinking".
After the original Trees Lounge shut down, Steve Buscemi bought the sign and restored it, to use for his movie, although he was not able to use it. He then gave it to a woman, who worked at Trees Lounge for forty years.
I coulda been somebody, instead of just an ice cream truck driver, which is what I am, let's face it.
Debbie: Who was that, Jerry Lewis?
Tommy: Jerry Lewis? You thought that was Jerry Lewis?
During the opening credits, an old man at the bar orders a large glass of liquor, filled with ice. In the next shot, there's no ice in the glass. However, this is a deliberate technique by the director to indicate the passing of time at Trees Lounge.
