The Tribeca Film Festival has announced the winners of its 16th edition, with “Keep the Change” (U.S. Narrative), “Son of Sofia” (International Narrative) and “Bobbi Jene” (Documentary) taking home the top prizes. 97 features and 57 shorts comprised the main lineup of this year’s fest, which began on April 19 and ends on April 30.
“It is more important than ever to celebrate artists both in front of and behind the camera who have the unique ability to share different viewpoints to inspire, challenge and entertain us,” said Jane Rosenthal, Tribeca’s executive chair and co-founder. “The winning creators from across the Festival program shared stories that did exactly that, and we are honored to recognize them tonight. And how wonderful is it that the top awards in all five feature film categories were directed by women.”

Nearly nine years ago, attorney Jose Baez was hired by Casey Anthony to defend her against charges that she had killed her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.
It was his first high-profile case — but it wasn’t his last.
After Anthony’s shocking acquittal, Baez found himself in high demand. His practice expanded. He was recognized everywhere he went. His phone rang off the hook, including calls for people who had previously said he was in over his head.
He even earned the nickname “the King of the Courtroom.”

While Kate Plays Christine deservedly got attention at Sundance this year for pushing the boundaries of the documentary form, Michal Marczak‘s All These Sleepless Nights also warrants a mention. A beautiful journey as we float through the lives of youth in Warsaw, it got picked up by The Orchard for a U.S. release likely next year, but first it will be released in Poland and now the first trailer has arrived.
Winner of the directing award in its World Cinema – Documentary category at Sundance, the jury said, “This filmmaker made a visually stunning film with unique vision. We feel the director is pushing the art of nonfiction into brave new territories. We the jury is really looking forward to see what this talented filmmaker does in the future.”

Great to be back for my fourth year at the Trinidad + Tobago Film Festival.

My first night, I went with my new favorite delegation, whom I already wrote about in my Tiff It’s a Wrap blog, the group of Jamaican filmmakers to see their five shorts showing here at ttff as part of the Jafta Propella initiative to put money into the production and distribution of shorts (rather than in yet-another film festival). The range of stories and storytelling styles was a tasting menu of hors d’oevres for the festival.

Can you believe it's been 20 years since you heard the words, "We the jury in the above-entitled action find the defendant, Orenthal James Simpson, not guilty of the crime of murder...a felony, upon Nicole Brown Simpson"? Or maybe you weren't born yet and you've seen it online, but we'd like to welcome you to Earth if for some reason you were unaware of the case of O.J. Simpson, football hero turned movie and TV star turned most famous murder defendant ever after his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman were killed on June 12, 1994. It was 20 years ago today that O.J. was acquitted of their murders, a moment that will live in pop culture infamy, and the raw emotion that talk of the...

War Witch, a Canadian-made film about a young girl who escapes from the African rebels who forced her to be a child soldier, was named Best Narrative Feature at the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival. “This indelible character study of a girl who becomes a woman before our eyes in the midst of harrowing war gives words to the unspeakable,” said the jury, which included Patricia Clarkson, Dakota Fanning, Mike Newell, EW’s Lisa Schwarzbaum, Jim Sheridan, and Irwin Winkler. “Riveting, heartbreaking, vivid, and eloquent, the movie balances scenes of crazy enemy hatred with moments of luminous private love.”

The Tribeca Film Festival awards ceremony took place on Thursday, and the controversial Cuban film "Una Noche" turned out to be the toast of the town. Though "War Witch" won the award for Best Narrative Feature and Rachel Mwanza was named Best Actress, "Una Noche" became the breakout story of the festival after two of its actors disappeared en route to New York.
Director Lucy Mulloy, cinematographers Trevor Forrest and Shlomo Godder were honored for their work on the film. Actors Dariel Arrechada and Jaiver Nunez Florian both won Best Actor in a Narrative Feature.
Other big winners include Nisha Pahuja's "The World Before Her" for Best Documentary Feature, Bryan Buckley's "Asad" for Best Narrative Short and Frederic Golding's "On the Mat" for Best Feature Film in the festival's online competition.
