A straight laced propane salesman in Arlen, Texas tries to deal with the wacky antics of his family and friends, while also trying to keep his son in line.
Producer John Altschuler created the character of Lucky Kleinschmidt. He described the him to Series Creator Mike Judge as a guy who "ought to look like Tom Petty without the success". This led producers to pursue Petty to provide the voice for the character, and to their surprise, he enthusiastically agreed.

In one episode Hank refers to his mother as a widow when she is actually a divorcee.
The music that plays over the closing credits can vary depending upon the nature of the episode.
When shown on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, there are humorous "sponsor spots" before/after the commercials, featuring businesses seen on the show (Arlen Library, Waffle Hut, Arlen Advocate newspaper, etc.), complete with comical slogans for said businesses.
