A straight laced propane salesman in Arlen, Texas tries to deal with the wacky antics of his family and friends, while also trying to keep his son in line.
The character of Hank Hill is based on a character in Beavis and Butt-Head (1993), by the name of Tom Anderson, who acted and talked exactly like Hank. Also, Hank's catchphrase of "That boy ain't right" was from an episode of "Beavis..." when they're at Burger World and Tom Anderson comments on Beavis, by saying, "That boy ain't right in the head."
In "Peggy's Turtle Song", Tom Landry Middle School is stated to be in the "Heimlich County School District" according to the bus Bobby rides. But in later seasons the buses list it as the "Arlen Independent School District." (This is most likely a continuity oversight, however, it is possible Arlen schools split off from the rest of Heimlich County to form a separate school district at some point.)
In the opening credits, the "Created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels" credit is shown on the side of a garbage bag that the Hills are throwing out.
When the pilot episode aired in syndication, a whole plot of the episode was trying to fix Hank's truck, the part where Luanne claims she fixed it in a simple way was edited.
