There was a lot of hullabaloo when Veronica's Closet was released, as it was created by the same people who brought you Friends, which was the smash-hit that kept on giving, so you would have thought that Veronica's Closet would ride on that wave. I think one thing I liked about Veronica's Closet was that Kirstie Alley wasn't afraid to poke fun at herself and her foibles init. Anyway, I think Veronica's Closet may have been in some ways the successor to Suddenly Susan. Perhaps Veronica's Closet could have endured more if it featured guest appearances from the Friends cast to keep the interest and the ratings init.
  • This undeservedly-trashed gem might very well be the most underrated sitcom of the past decade. After initial good reviews, the critics unfairly began tearing it apart, and the American public at large - who aren't exactly known for their keen abilities to form their own opinions - promptly followed suit. What the detractors obviously never got was the series' clever satire, something that is sorely missing from that "other" Bright, Kauffman and Crane show (the bafflingly-popular "Friends"). "Veronica's Closet" tore apart the frivolous underwear industry, the phony bigwig designers and the vacuous high-profile fashion models, all with ease. The casting was terrific with Kirstie Alley, Kathy Najimy, Wallace Langham, Daryl Mitchell and even Dan Cortese exhibiting great chemistry and playing well off on one another. The series would hit a bumpy patch in the middle of its run, thanks to NBC's interference, endless cast and producer shuffling, and the unfortunate miscasting of the otherwise talented Ron Silver. Sadly, just as it was beginning to get back on track towards the end, NBC treated it like the unwanted stepchild, yanked it off the schedule for the likes of "God, the Devil & Bob" (which they cancelled a mere three weeks after premiering), and finally junked it before the finale could even air.

Even at its worst, "Veronica's Closet" was far from the worst show on television. But just like Rodney Dangerfield, it never got any respect.
  • I don't understand how it gets such bad reviews sometimes. I know it's been some time since it was on air. Especially here in Czech republic. I was about 12 or 14, I don't remember shows from abroad used to get here pretty late, and I can't say I didn't love the show. I used to record it on a tape and we would watch it with my older sister eagerly. And I don't remember me not laughing every episode. i admit that in the third season it wasn't as funny and as energetic as the first season but still I wouldn't say it's even remotely bad. Sitcoms are usually getting very predictable after few season because the characters can't live on variations of their peculiar gags forever and there are only few sitcoms that kept somewhat medium quality. However, nobody can take Veronica's closet away from me. It's a hilarious show that can take you through a rainy day.

I don't know which season is now running here in Italy on Fox satellite TV, but I find it really irresistible. In my opinion it is one of the best sit comedy of this period, full of humor and great intelligence. It makes you smiling even after one bad day. Kristie is very good to joke with herself (for example about getting fat), not so easy for a top actress, and she is funny as she was in "cin cin" ( I don't know the American name, is the sit comedy in a pub with Ted Danson). All the other actors are nearly unknown here in Italy, but they all work well. In my personal opinion it's more funny then "Friends" and I'm sorry to know it's ended.
  • I have watched nearly all of the episodes from all 3 seasons (thank you re-runs on cable) and I have thoroughly enjoyed Veronica's Closet. I bet most of the people who deem it "crappy" are people who have never watched it, and are affixiated on reality television. But I guess everybody's entitled to an opinion. Anyway, Kirstie Alley, Kathy Najimy and the rest of the cast shine. At first I hated Season 2: the original opening sequence was dropped, and Ron Silver was added, but now that I watch it, it was just as quality as Season 1 and 3 (maybe just a bit less so) Many people just seem so hellbent on picking faults of this show - so what if Kirstie Alley was a little chubby?! Must every actress be pencil-thin, eg Callista Flockhart? So what if her hair changed? Why must you think you can blame this show for being crap just because Alley had blonde streaks? Veronica's Closet is an entertaining, funny show. It may not be a classic like Frasier or Seinfeld, but it deserves better than some of these insulting remarks. And it deserves better than being cancelled by NBC.
  • I have to disagree with everyone who thinks that this show was from the pits of hell. This show was so funny I found myself literally on the floor laughing.

Maybe the show was an oversexed comedy, but what do you expect from a sitcom based loosely on Victoria's Secret? I mean, when you get Kirstie Alley & Kathy Najimy together as a comedy duo, you know it has to be funny is SOME aspect! And, as crude as it may sound, toilet humor really seemed to fit with this show. It was subtle but so obvious making it a winning comedy. My favorite episode is 'Veronica's Perfect Man' in which Ronnie's date is constantly farting and embarrassing her and her co-workers.

If you think this show sucks then go back to watching Nova because you aren't ready for prime time!
  • OK, I don't know what all you people are talking about. The 3rd season of this sitcom SUCKED.

The first season, on the other hand, was brilliant - it was laugh-out-loud funny (a whole lot better than the boring, repetitive "Friends"), and it satirised the fashion industry and all its air-head models so...beautifully.

I never missed an episode. I would watch each one about 3 times until the following week's episode. But once Hunter came in and took over the company, I felt physically sick. "NO!" I thought. After that, the sitcom got worse and worse, what with the boring Alec Bilson (Ron Silver) and the excruciatingly unfunny 3rd season featuring the great June (one of the redeeming but under-used features of that season). I have not seen those "final-and-previously-unaired" episodes, as I lost interest in the show.

But I wish NBC would just take the show from the first season, before Hunter took over the company, and carry it on from there. Correct the mistakes; forget everything that happened afterwards, don't introduce anybody new (ALWAYS a mistake, in my opinion), keep the great characters of Veronica's dad Pat and ex-husband Bryce, and let "Veronica's Closet" save itself from itself.
  • It's such a shame when networks decide that there's something wrong with their hit shows. "Veronica's Closet" is a perfect example. Instead of trying to keep the chemistry that made the show hysterical in the first season, they decided to tinker with it, cause its untimely death. When they dropped Robert Prosky and brought in Ron Silver to play Ronnie's new boss and love interest, Alec, it seems that they tried to re-create the chemistry Alley had on "Cheers," but Silver is no Ted Danson. I don't even like Ted Danson, but I wouldn't insult him by comparing the two! In the third season, after Alec's airhead bride pushed him into a volcano and took over the company, the show seemed to be getting back to its roots, but thanks to NBC's dumb idea to reschedule it, the series lost its core audience and was prematurely jerked from the airwaves. The final episodes, which didn't air until USA Network got a hold of them, were among the best, but sadly, NBC decided the show was over. . .Thanks so much to the brain-dead exec that cast Silver!
  • It's one of the best shows ever! Dunno why it ended so early.. I was expecting at least a decade of a such funny sitcom! Some worst sitcoms are lasting more than this! That's so unfair.. Kirstie Alley is surprisingly funny as the leading character Veronica, and well, she never gets boring! The leading roles, tend to be boring, but this one no! She's very funny, sweet, crazy and stuff! And etc..! Dunno why this series got so many bad reviews.. It's so funny and so intelligent as Friends, and The Nanny.. Kathy Najimy is also very funny as Olive, and the whole cast! Even Ron Silver, as Alec! I don't laugh for everything, and this series still crack me up every time, some situations there, just make you laugh out and loud. It's really worth a check. I hope they return with this sitcom.. I really miss new episodes.. even tho we watch the old ones, and you never get tired! You still laugh from the same thing over and over again, and it's very rare to this happens nowadays.. It's really disappointed it got cancel.. It should never get cancelled! It was a great idea, and great acted and well, it just should never be cancelled.. I miss V&C :(
  • I have respectfully read EVERY ONE of the other user reviews of the show on this site. It seems that most of the users liked "Veronica's Closet." It also seems that the vast majority of these people are from non-American countries, from such places as Wales, Germany, and Brazil. Maybe to them this show is humorous and refreshing... perhaps it gains something in translation... but now I think it's only fair that someone from it's country of origin write a fair review.

"Veronica's Closet" was awful. It was a star-centric show who seemed to think it's lead actress (Kirstie Alley) was a comic genius. While she was very funny as part of the dream team ensemble of "Cheers," she was vile, loathsome, and offensive as "Ronnie," president of her own lingerie company. Kirstie's yo-yo weight gain, her bizarro hair colors, and her constant whining made this show unwatchable. Her frilly, flowing, feathered wardrobe looked less like something a fashion designer would wear and more like something created by the Children's Television Workshop.

Then there was the show itself. Starting with the premise that "Sex Sells," the show's creators decided to make EVERY joke in the series about intercourse and dirty words. For example, Wallace Langham as the sexually ambiguous assistant. The constant insinuations and inferences that he might be gay were not funny, only creepy. And who can forget the heart-warming scenes where Kirstie and her secretary Olive (Kathy Najimy) would talk about the size of men's genitals while soaking up martinis at the bar? Less than Absolutely Fabulous.

Not to be outdone by the ladies the show serves up two of the most disgusting male characters in television history with Dan Cortese and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell as two horny executives who were out to Get Some! See them try to hump everything that moves, including pregnant women and their co-worker's relatives! As if this wasn't scuzzo enough, Ron Silver- America's favorite low-key psychotic- was added to the cast as Veronica's love interest!

If I sound bitter about this show it's because I am. Many of us hate it so passionately because we were "forced" to watch it between our favorite shows "Friends" and "Seinfeld," where it was sandwiched for survival. For three seasons we were amazed that the show had not been cancelled, and for three seasons the actors and producers of the show sunk lower and lower into comedy so filthy I had to shower after watching.

"Veronica's Closet" has mellowed a bit over time, and if you see it in re-runs or syndication it will not seem as loathsome to you as it did to many of us who saw it in it's original run. Today the series is trashy, flat, and occasionally funny; when it was alive it was downright unholy.
  • Simply horrible. Every single person at NBC should be beaten with their own ignorance to allow shows like this and "Suddenly Crappy" to continue, while quality shows like "Newsradio" are canceled.

No wonder there is almost no sitcoms on the air anymore. Get a beer, and veg out while the industry pumps you full of "reality based programming".

    Why, God, why????
  • This has GOT to be the WORST show I have ever seen! I cannot believe that it is still on. The jokes(?) are stupid, the writing is bad, and it is just plain horrible! They should just take a hint and cancel it! Who watches that crap?
  • Veronica's Closet is a sophisticated "sitcom," obviously aimed at the thirtysomething, fortysomething demographics. A lot of its humor is probably too subtle for the x-gen, even the high school graduates. Kirstie Alley and Kathy Najimy are old pros who play off one another with a grace and professionalism that's a joy to watch. Ron Silver was probably brought in to add star quality to the production and he succeeds admirably. His style is definitely "old school suave and debonair." Dan Cortese, Wallace Langham, and Daryl Mitchell provide the thirtysomething flavor, sexy young men who fill three slots: darkly handsome, boy-next-door, and even more darkly sexy. The humor is right on, just what you'd expect in a workplace called Veronica's Closet.
  • This show just got renewed for next season.

    oh no.

Maybe put it on another day, though. Then we can throw Just Shoot Me or News Radio (that's getting bad too, we miss you Phil Hartman) in between Frasier and ER.

i dont know what this guy is on about this is a great show. and the newer begining makes it even better. i think they should bring it back to the US as we have finished it on satellite here and they are on the 3rd seires on ordinary television. Kirsty Alley is brilliant in this as she is in most things. her slightly whiney caharcters that some people have mentioned is what makes her great it gives her an edge that most actreses and actors dont have. I have the newer opening music as the ring tone on my phone. and i have the opening sequence as the screen saver on my phone also. this is a good program!
  • man i LOVED this show! i personally loved it bc it was kirstie just doing what she does best, being funny and doing it in that kirstie way that she so wonderfully does that no one else does. and the writing was great man! what the hell? why did it get canceled? i swear to god that if it didnt get canceled it would be the best thing on tv besides will and grace lol. veronicas closet was FUNNY. people were way to harsh with thier comments man. kirstie alley is so whiny and obnoxious and fat and annoying. blah blah blah dont you people get it,thats what she does! thats her style. she puts it in like everything she does. and its to be FUNNY! jesus people just dont know good ole comedy anymore. anywho i taped like every episode of that show and i really wish it was still on. kudos kirstie! yeah and everyone else in the show lol.
  • This has GOT to be one of the worst shows on television! Kirstey Alley is the same annoying, whiny character she always is, the writing is TERRIBLE, the jokes aren't funny. They call it a situation comedy, but none of the situations they get themselves into are at all funny, simply pathetic. The only good thing about this show (if you can call it that) is Wallace Langham as the somewhat witty Josh, and I do mean somewhat! And adding Ron Silver to make it FUNNIER!?! You've GOT to be kidding me!
  • One year ago, I saw Veronica the first time. I thought:"Oh what's that? But it's funny". It seems to me as a great show, but I couldn't watch it, because it's send in the night. And like every normal person I sleep at night. A few months ago I thought that i could record it and so I've seen the whole third season and it was great. I've never seen the first and the second but I think, that they must be funny, too.
  • I just wanna say that I love Veronica's Closet !!! That is one of the best american series. Kirstie Alley is a beautiful, talented and wonderful actress. And the others cast members ( especially Kathy and Wallace ) were so funny ! Even now ( that the series is over ), Veronica's Closet is still a very popular show here in Brazil. And I can't understand how a great sitcom like this has been canceled ... In my opinion, the best season was the second. All those situations between Ronnie and Alec were hilarious. Well, I hope that Kirstie Alley keep doing comedy series like Cheers and Veronica's Closet :)
  • Funny from the outset, with not only a great leading role (Alley) but fantastic support from Prosky and, notably, Kathy Najimy (yes, she of "Sister Act" fame.

The series aired from 1997 to 2000 (with four episodes unaired on NBC and the UK).

    God I miss it!
  • why is everyone saying horrible things about this show i think it is great, funny and a well made show. I agree adding Ron Silver to the cast was a really bad decision but adding Lorri bagley to the cast as the typical attractive dumb blond was a great decision. I think this season with Lorri added to the cast and the camp Josh getting engaged is the best season yet. Thank you for this great T.V show.

Veronica's closet is one of the best sitcoms i ever watched. I would like to know why some people say horrible things about this show. Season 1 was good, Season 2 was a little better and Season 3 was the best season with the funniest June Bilson. All the cast is funny and i'm really furious with NBC because they didn't show the 4 final episodes of the series..Will we never know what happened in the end of this great show?
  • Veronica's Closet was a very funny show, especially in its first and third seasons. But alas, it was the 2nd season that eventually killed it. Ron Silver's character was arrogant, unlikeable and boring. Killing him off in the beginning of the 3rd season was a wise move, but it was too late. Most of the viewers bailed by then. NBC did the right thing by adding the ditzy blonde opposite Veronica, but they failed to put Veronica's Closet in a GOOD time slot. It was cancelled while new episodes were never even aired - until now, on USA Network. Look at NBC now...it's cancelled more shows than any network...they should have just KEPT this show on Thursday nights at 9:30, and it would be enjoying it's 4th season...and so would I!
  • Another NBC hit sitcom, but, unlike some people said, I thought this comedy was very funny, and I watched nearly every episode.

Originally, the story was that Veronica "Ronnie" Chase (played by Kirstie Alley) runs a successful lingerie company. He best friend Olive (Sister Act's Kathy Najimy) is her secretary, with Josh (Wallace Langham), Leo (Daryl Mitchell) and Perry (Dan Cortese) rounding out the rest of the cast. Pat Prosky also starred in the first season as Ronnie's dad.

The second season saw Ronnie co-own her company with Alex, who falls in love with Ronnie, but "tragically" dies at the end of the 2nd season after a volcanic accident.

The third season was the final one, after Veronica's Closet got the chop. Sporting a new theme song, and a new hair colour for Kirstie Alley, the third season introduced us to Ronnie's new co-owner, June (Lorri Bagley) who inherited Alex's half of the company after a romantic weekend away.

We also found out that Josh was gay, and later, Olive makes millions of dollars over an Internet company, and buys out June's half of Veronica's Closet.

Since VC ended halfway through 2000, Alley has been very quiet. Daryl Mitchell and Dan Cortese have both played teachers (Daryl on 10 Things I Hate About You, and Dan or 'That's Life'), while Kathy hasn't been heard of either.

It wasn't as good as NBC's other hit, 'Friends', but a lot better than Brooke Shield's 'Suddenly Susan', which sitcom seemed to mirror Kirstie's (or maybe the other way around), but in the three short years it was on air, there were plenty of laughs.
